Eric Prydz at Prime Boston: A Review

Going into this show, I wasn't terribly sure what to expect, besides of course a killer performance from progressive house legend Eric Prydz. Although I wasn't all that familiar with Prydz, I knew he had been making some noise with his semi-monthly podcasts, which spotlight songs and artists that the vast majority of the population have never heard of. I also knew that he had recently been offered residency at Wynn nightclub in Las Vegas, where he displays his new show concept, Black Dice: a minimal-lighting, back-to-basics approach to the growing EDM craze. All in all, I couldn't wait to see what Prydz had to offer.

Paradise Rock Club to Host Daft Punk Cover Band

The typical cover band consists of the die hard rock fans wanting to relive the hay days of a beloved big name act. Artists such as Bruce Springsteen, KISS, and Journey have all had their fair share of cover bands with witty names. On April 23, though, a new type of cover band will be visiting Paradise Rock Club.

One More Time: A Daft Punk Tribute is a full blown replica of the Daft Punk experience. Their website describes the act as “the first and only realistic tribute” of its kind. Throughout the show, the pair wears replicas of the quintessential Daft Punk helmets while on a pyramid stage, creating “the perfect Daft Punk inspired vibe.”

The original Parisian duo hasn't toured since their Alive 2007 album was released. Since, they have been in the studio, releasing the Tron soundtrack . It was recently announced via Columbia Record that Daft Punk will release their first album in eight years this upcoming May, but there are no signs of a tour anytime soon.While fans across the world speculate as to whether Daft Punk will ever hit the stage again, the One More Time tribute act is attempting to fill the void. 

As EDM becomes more widely accepted by the music industry, it’s to be expected that tributes to the biggest artists will come about, but, how effective is an EDM cover band? In a few years, will similar tributes pop up? The of One More Time is the show that the tribute puts on for the audience. By recreating a Daft Punk concert as closely as they can, they are trying to put the audience in the same state of mind that Daft Punk would. For any future cover bands to succeed and tour like One More Time, they would need to create a show as similar to the real thing as possible.

The problem with cover bands of other artists, though, iis that many EDM shows are great because of the energy, vibes and work the specific EDM artist puts into it. The anonymity and ambiguousness of Daft Punk is the only reason why a cover band like One More Time can be successful. It’s hard to see a cover of Skrillex or Avicii going on tour and succeeding since their personas are so closely tied to their music.

Big Gigantic at the House of Blues Boston Review

The lights went dark at the House of Blues on Friday, February 15, as Big Gigantic finished their last song, but not a fan in the crowd turned for the exits.  The energy was exploding around the room as chants of “one more song” and “Big Gigantic” lifted from the floor, nobody was ready for the night to be over as a room full of fans begged for more.  Several minutes later, after a short lived break, Dom Lalli and Jeremy Salken of Big Gigantic stormed back onto a dark stage in an explosion of light.  Moments later, the silence was split by Dom’s beautiful saxophone as they dropped “Fantastic” on an amazing crowd.  As the song came to a close, the crowd still wanted more, and Big Gigantic was prepared to give it to them.  Dom threw on some heavy dubstep and let the House of Blues rage out one last time before calling it a night and sending a mass of satisfied fans to the streets.
