Paul Oakenfold Interview || EDM Boston
12/14/2011 03:45:00 PM
paul oakenfold
Interview taken from beatportal.com written by: Ellie
The daddy of trance, Paul Oakenfold has been at the forefront of dance music since the 1980s. He recently released the mix compilation We Are Planet Perfecto Volume 01, and we caught up with him to talk about the state of trance. Read on for the interview.
Can you describe how you felt when you first went to Goa and discovered the music over there?
I know it sounds like a cliché, but there really was something quite enlightening about the experiences I had in Goa. It’s easy to see why so many people have traveled there to party and decided to stay for good. It’s a seductive way of life that is very appealing. It’s hedonistic but also very respectful of nature and there’s a real sense of community. The music being played in Goa in the ‘90s – which was being released on labels like Dragonfly and Tip – was, and continues to be, a huge influence on what I play as a DJ.
Have you been back to Goa / Anjuna Beach recently?
I haven’t been to Goa for many years but I’m sure musically it’s as cutting-edge as it always has been. The Goa sound has evolved into the psy-sound, which I guess you could argue is now hugely focal in Israel, but the scene and the sound is thriving internationally. I see Thomas Cook does holidays to Goa now, and I’ve seen pictures of big five-star hotels on the coast, so maybe it’s changed since I was last there. I know there have been some recent discussions about the idea of maybe doing some shows in India in 2012, so hopefully I’ll get to find out for myself.
You like to play lots of different genres and are vocal about not wanting to be stuck to one sound, but as a pioneer of trance music, would you say you connect with the genre more than others?
There is a particular side of trance that I am particularly fond of. Yes, I would say I have a special bond with this style of music, but I still regard myself as a DJ who looks for strong melody and song in any and all genres when finding material for my shows.
What would you say to people who say trance music hasn’t evolved since the 90s?
You’re wrong.

Morgan Page Review Part 2 || EDMBoston || The Estate
12/14/2011 02:45:00 PM
avicii, Morgan Page, sebastian ingrosso
As Page proceeded along with his set the dance floor got progressively packed and everyone was enjoying themselves. To hype up the crowd more, The Estate gave out glow necklaces and the new foam glow tubes, a rare thing to see a club give out anything for free. +1 Estate. The flourescent glow definitely amped up the crowd.
Morgan Page had great energy and worked the microphone when needed and not anymore. He moved from a high upbeat energy intro to a darker sound capped by Sander Van Doorns “reach out”. The next track broke that dark energy, when he played his hit song. “in the air”. The crowd burst into applause and hit the intro vocal on time. It was a great transition of energy in the club. Page proceeded to his stride with Afrojack’s “Takeover Control”

Electronic dance music glossary || EDM Boston
EDM got USA Today's attention, yesterday, in a feature explaining the jargon of the industry. Since EDM is feeble in Boston and we have many new followers(thank you), we figured this would be a great article to pass along. let us know what words you don't understand on twitter and facebook.
(USA TODAY) Break-what? Dub-who? For new fans of electronic dance music, the terminology is a
maze of genres and sub-genres. Let's let Moby help us sort them all out:
EDM: "The first thing to know," Moby says, "is that no
one calls it electronic dance music. The term is EDM,
and it's a catch-all term for the different forms of
electronic music."
BPM: "All EDM is rooted in bpms (beats per minute),"
says Moby, who set a Guinness World Record for fastest
tempo in a single with his 1,000-bpm song Thousand.
"So trance music is faster, house music is slower."
Dubstep: "It's a descendant of jungle, an early '90s,
very fast form of EDM with reggae and breakbeat
influences. Jungle morphed into drum and bass, and
then there was an offshoot of that, two-step, which
slowed the bass lines way down," Moby says. "Heavy
metal and hip-hop, interestingly, share the same tempo,
around 75 bpm. Dubstep is an amalgamation of the
two."
House and techno: "They're both offshoots of '80s
disco," Moby says. "House has a slower bpm, techno is
faster." Both house and techno adhere to a steady 4/4
drum pattern.
Breakbeat: This rhythm breaks up 4/4 patterns with
syncopation and is often used in dubstep.
"It uses a lot of samples and is not as fast as house
music, but faster than hip-hop," Moby says. "The Chemical Brothers made it very
popular, but I'd credit Fatboy Slim with bringing it to the mainstream."
Acid: "It's not the drug," Moby says. "Acid specifically refers to the sound of a bass line,
and it's very synthetic. It was a sound created in the late '80s with the Roland TB 303
bass synthesizer, which has a very harsh sound." Acid can also be used to distinguish
between subgenres, such as acid house and acid breaks.
