STEVE AOKI "MOST POPULAR DJS DON'T HAVE ANY ALBUMS OUT"

(Mixmag) In a new interview, Dim Mak boss and notorious cake hurler Steve Aoki claimed that it's not necessary to release an album every year in order to be successful. He also shed some light in his upcoming releases.

According to the DJ, you only have to release a few songs a year to maintain your status and credibility.

"The great thing about the dance/EDM world is it's not like you need an album every year. You just have to release a few songs that translate to a global audience. And that’s why some of the best, most popular DJs don’t even have an album out," he said.

Aoki went on to praise chart-topper Avicii for his single releases over the past few years: "Avicii doesn't have an album out but his music translates across cultures and languages to people all over the world."

As well as talking about the EDM scene, Aoki also spoke about his forthcoming collaborations and releases.

"I have a collaboration with Knife Party called 'Piledriver' coming out and a record called 'Singularities' coming out at some point," he said.

So there you go kids. Make a banger. Claim world domination. Get a licence to chuck cream cakes at squealing teenage girls. Sorted.

Nervo Signed As New Cover Girls!

nervo covergirl
The Blond Bombshells, Nervo, have taken their rightful path to the top of popcultures beauty mantel. Live and Mim, twin sisters and founding members of Nervo, have been signed by COVER GIRL. As former models, it's no surprise to see the signing. However, bringing an electronic act in to represent a mega brand in the US is just a sign of the times. It's not your parents or grand parents asking, "Who is this Avicii?" but soon enough it will be "Who is this Nervo?"

NERVO will make their public debut as COVERGIRLs on November 7th at a special Branding party in NYC. Of course the duo will be the featured headliners. However the girls musicwon't be the only thing featured that night. NERVO will be showcasing new nail art designs created using the covergirl brand’s launch of Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss collection.

“We’re both so excited to join COVERGIRL and be part of an iconic brand that shares our beliefs,” said Liv Nervo. “It’s been really important for us to stay true to ourselves, our style, and our musical choices throughout the years. We believe individuality is a trend that will always be in style and that every woman should rock what makes them unique inside and out.”

“The NERVO sisters are paving the way for women in a male-dominated industry; their determination is inspiring to all young women working to break barriers and create their own path. With their immense talent and never-give-up mentality, they are the perfect spokesmodels to encourage fans worldwide to dance to their own beat,” said Esi Eggleston Bracey, VP and General Manager, COVERGIRL Cosmetics. “We are always looking for fun and fierce young women who can empower the next generation of COVERGIRLs, and NERVO does just that while bringing the heart and energy of EDM music to COVERGIRL.”

On the front lines of street style trends, NERVO will also serve as Brand correspondents in addition to appearing in promotional and digital COVERGIRL campaigns – sharing with the COVERGIRL community content inspired by their personal styles as well as the different looks they see at shows and on the road. Shared content will also include a range of DIY tips detailing how NERVO incorporates COVERGIRL products into their looks, from Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss to Clump Crusher by LashBlast Mascara and Outlast All-Day Lip Color.

Kill the Noise Takes Cues From Skrillex ~Rollingstone

kill the noise skrillex

(RollingStone) "Look at that crowd!" says a beaming Skrillex. "They are so pumped up, it's amazing." He's watching from the side of the stage as thousands of kids jump and scream at HARD Day of the Dead in L.A. last weekend. They're dancing to Kill the Noise, who records for Skrillex's label, OWSLA.

Between touring with Knife Party and his OWSLA labelmates, Kill the Noise (real name Jake Stanczak) is becoming accustomed to the growing live fan base. But he is quick to deflect the credit to his boss. "Sonny [Moore, Skrillex's given name] spent a lot of time helping the scene in a lot of ways, and helping us, so I feel like I owe a bit of that to him," Stanczak tells us in his trailer a few minutes after handing the decks over to Knife Party.

Skrillex influenced his work ethic, he says. "I spent a lot of time expecting something to come, and once I met that guy, it's like, 'Man, if you just work hard enough for long enough, the opportunities kind of align and happen when they're supposed to,'" he says. "It feels like for a lot of people, the time is now."

Making sure the momentum continues, Kill the Noise has just released a new EP, Black Magic, featuring collaborations with Feed Me (one of the artists on Deadmau5's Mouse Trap label) and a new artist by the name of Brillz from whom Stanczak expects big things.

"I guarantee this year people are gonna hear a lot from him," he says.

Another collaborator is a composer named Evan Duffy, who contributed a piano piece. Kill the Noise knows that might surprise some people. "A lot of the stuff I do is really aggressive electro and dubstep and drum-and-bass, [but] it's a little bit of everything on there, tempo-wise," he says of Black Magic.

With the seven-song EP, he intended to push himself out of his comfort zone. "I tried to explore my ability out of my specialty, which is more aggressive stuff," he says. "The past few years I've really been working on the melodic stuff, so that was the point on this one – to try to show that I can do that."

One of the perks of the growing scene is the ability to mix it up, he says. "I just feel like now it isn't necessarily so much about beating people over the head with the big drops and the loudness war," he says. "[With] some true fans, now you can kind of tell a story."

And that storytelling takes him back to his youthful tastes. "I think back to what was the most influential time for me listening to music. I'm 32 now – I grew up listening to Nine Inch Nails and Nirvana, and before that, Metallica," he says. "They would have the really crazy thing they were known for, but they would have a ballad and the weird electronic [stuff] produced by Butch Vig. So that's kind of what I want to do – get back to when I was a kid."

Armin van Buuren plans “very different” album for May 2013

(Inthemix) “It’s the best thing about my job,” Armin van Buuren quipped when asked by DJ Mag about the album-making process. The interview in DJ Mag’s current issue, which follows the Dutchman’s reclaiming of the #1 spot in the Top 100 DJs poll, touches on the follow-up to 2010’s Mirage. The pop-trance route of that album – which saw him collaborating with songwriter Guy Chambers, responsible for penning hits for the likes of Robbie Williams – proved divisive with fans.

In the DJ Mag interview, Armin reveals the follow-up is about 70-percent done, with a projected release date of May 2013. When inthemix heard him speak at the Amsterdam Dance Event last month, he jokingly claimed that his manager has served him a strict deadline of having the studio work completed by the end of January. “I’m really curious how my fans are going to react because it’s very different,” he told DJ Mag. “There are a few more safe tracks, and I’ve been road-testing a few of the more trance-y tracks off the new album, but making an artist album always allows you to experiment a little bit more.”

At ADE, Armin expanded on the tricky balance of fans’ expectations. “I can’t please everybody; you can never please 100-percent,” Armin told the audience. “First and foremost, I have a responsibility towards myself as an artist, to be who I am. The feedback that people sometimes give me is, ‘This is not you, Armin’. Yes, this is me, and you have to learn to accept that. I’m growing, and my musical representation is changing. I grow older, and I become drawn to different musical styles, this is a normal thing. If you don’t like it, you can switch it off. You don’t have to like Armin van Buuren.”

Also looming on the trance don’s agenda is the A State Of Trance 600 celebration. The world tour will be swinging close to Australia, with ASOT 600 taking over the first night of Future Music Festivalin Kuala Lumpur. Armin and co. will headline Friday 15 March, while The Prodigy, Feed Me, Bloc Party, Kill The Noise and more lead the next night. Super-fans might want to start investigating flights.
