Boston's Soul Clap: Funk Phenomenons

(Societeperrier.com) Certain styles of dance music may be garnering all the buzz these days, but for Boston-bred Soul Clap dance music will always be about intimate, funky house – no matter how big they get.

The duo – made up of Eli “Elyte” Goldstein and Charles “Cnyce” Levine – met while in high school in Boston. The pair cut their teeth spinning clubs in the city’s underground dance scene and became students of legendary Boston disco DJ and record store owner Caril Mitro, who they say inspired them to deliver their brand of spacey, '90s-inspired funk to the rest of the planet.

“It's really been an amazing ride,” Goldstein says from Dublin. “All either of us has wanted to do since high school is be DJs, but we didn't really have any idea what it would be like if we actually made it.”

Now based in Miami, the pair’s new album, EFUNK, is a George Clinton- and disco-inspired interstellar trip through peace, love and understanding, with a nod to '90s soul and R & B.

“Need Your Lovin’” is a slow-building, loin-roiling house cut dripping with sultriness, thanks to the sweetly innocent vocals of Mel Blatt of '90s UK girl group All Saints. “Let It Go” features Roldy Cezaire’s silky smooth whispers over a bubbling, deep house pulse, while Franceska’s turn on the downtempo “Take It Slow” is simply Janet Jackson-esque.

“When we're in our studio in Miami we spend a lot of time hanging out and jamming with our computers, synths and even instruments,” Goldstein explains, noting that they even played horns and a kazoo on the new album. “We spent a few weeks just improvising and putting ideas down and then chose the best and put them all together.”

Released on Wolf + Lamb, the album’s title is an acronym for Everybody's Freaky Under Nature's Kingdom. Goldstein describes it as “a call to emancipate our hips from the androids of dancefloor repetition.”

Besides the new record, last year Soul Clap did a joint mix with Wolf + Lamb for !K7's DJ-Kicks respected series and were featured on BBC Radio 1’s renowned Essential Mix.

Since rocketing out of Boston’s fertile dance music underground, the pair has spent much of their time playing the world’s coolest house hotspots. Asked for their favorites, Goldstein says, “The Marcy Hotel in New York is the most magic venue in the world and our spiritual home. The Electric Pickle in Miami is our second home, a venue full of love and wild party spirit.”

He also raves about Warung in Brazil, which he calls, “an exotic jungle rave on the beach” and Mint Club in Leeds, U.K., which he describes as “hysteria.” Watergate in Berlin is another favorite “because you're pretty much guaranteed an amazing time there.”

They’ll also be doing a residency at DC10 in Ibiza this summer.

“Since we started touring three years ago, life has been a whirlwind of traveling to cool cities, playing crazy parties and meeting wonderful people,” he says. “Since it took so long for us to make it internationally, we're always super thankful to get love for the music we make and play.”

Swedish Lunch Disco

By Nathalie Rothschild

(slate.com)When it comes to lunch breaks, the laissez-faire French like to take two hours out of their workday to savor their food in the company of colleagues while workaholic Americans prefer dining solo in front of their computers. Well, in Sweden we have a whole other vibe going. Here, more and more workers are foregoing both leisurely lunches and "al-desko" dining in favor of daytime raves.

It started in the fall of 2010 when 14 friends decided to dance their lunch breaks away in their office garage. They called their gathering "Lunch Beat." As rumors about this literally underground movement spread, more and more people joined in. Today, Lunch Beat events are being arranged by a core group of organizers at venues around Sweden, attracting up to 600 people each time, and copycat clubs are popping up across Europe. Lunch Beat events can be arranged by any individual, group or company anywhere in the world as long as the organizers respect the founders' Manifesto, a list of 10 rules specifying, for instance, that Lunch Beat discos must be nonprofit events, take place at lunch time, have 60-minute long DJ sets, and include a takeaway meal. In 2011, "lunch disco" was officially recognized as a new word by the Swedish Language Council.

The basic idea behind Lunch Beat is that workers take an hour out in the middle of the day to let loose in the company of fellow dance-enthusiasts. The founders have dubbed it "your week's most important business lunch" and say that they want to create a sense of community among participants. But the discos are not meant to be crass networking opportunities. After all, the fourth rule of the manifesto is "You don’t talk about your job at Lunch Beat." Instead, the aim is to embody "playfulness, participation and community," the founders write. It’s intended almost to be a way of forgetting about your job, so you can feel energized and inspired when you get back to your desk.

With its strobe lights, smoke machines, funky wall projections, pounding techno music, and crowded dance floor filled with fist-pumping, sweat-dripping revelers, Lunch Beat recreates the atmosphere of nightclubs. Organizers look for spaces where there are not a lot of spectators or passers by, because they want dancers, not gawkers. The party starts promptly at noon and ends at 1 p.m. sharp. And while a sandwich, fruit, and water are included in the ticket price, drugs and alcohol are strictly forbidden.

Deadmau5 new Head case mistaken for Coffee Table

If you didn't know Joel Zimmerman (aka deadmau5) has had his Deadmau5 Head/mask technologically updated.  The new deadmau5 head will be able to produce LED light graphics.  This means cleaner cut and more precise graphics then in the past.  Definitely a fun new toy that the crowds should enjoy at their EDM shows.

At any rate, Deadmau5 was shipped a new case for the mask.  However, he believe the deadmau5 head case to be a random equipment box and set it up as a coffee table.  It wasn't until he chatted with Paul and found out what he had done.  Read the dialog below:

[5:37:39 PM] deadmau5: so ill bring the laptop so we can do anything custom
[5:37:50 PM] deadmau5: also, i need clysdale to make a case for this LED head sooner than later
[5:37:56 PM] deadmau5: coz i wouldnt check this in luggage as is
[5:38:14 PM] Paul: yeah I’ll follow up on that
[5:38:21 PM] Paul: It should have been sent to you already?
[5:38:22 PM] deadmau5: they should come over next week when im back
[5:38:24 PM] deadmau5: and measure it up
[5:38:39 PM] deadmau5: and all that… coz i got an idea of how it could be perfectly snug.
[5:38:53 PM] Paul: should have been sent to you on 6th APril
[5:39:00 PM] deadmau5: oh the case?
[5:39:01 PM] Paul: It was already done
[5:39:05 PM] deadmau5: wait
[5:39:09 PM] deadmau5: was it big and purple
[5:39:10 PM] deadmau5: ?
[5:39:25 PM] Paul: yes
[5:39:27 PM] deadmau5: AHAHAHA fuck
[5:39:33 PM] deadmau5: ive been using it as a coffe table
[5:39:35 PM] deadmau5: i was like
[5:39:36 PM] deadmau5: wtf is this

[5:39:38 PM] Paul: HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA
