New #1 DJ coming in DJ Mag Top 100

(Inthemix) At the end of October, DJ Mag is set to reveal the 2012 results in the always-divisive Top 100 DJs poll. Since the poll’s beginnings in 1997, the number 1 spot has been shared between some of dance music’s most celebrated stalwarts: Carl Cox took out the first year, Paul Oakenfold had 1998 and 1999 tied up, Sasha and John Digweed took 2000 and 2001 respectively, Tiesto held firm from 2002 to 2004, Paul van Dyk had ’05 and ’06, then it was over to Dutch trance titan Armin van Buurento hold the title for four consecutive years. In 2011, it was the turn of chart-troubling FrenchmanDavid Guetta to ascend to the #1 position. Cue much angst from some corners of the internet, and even an awkward handover from Armin to Guetta at Amsterdam Dance Event (the video has been taken down, by the way).

The new issue of DJ Mag contains a small message on page 6: “There is a new #1. Who will it be?” 2012 has been a star-making year for new guard players like Avicii and Skrillex, but 2011’s results had Deadmau5, Above & Beyond, Afrojack and Dash Berlin also fighting up the ranks. While Swedish House Mafia’s farewell circuit could also be their ticket to the #1 spot, we can’t ignore the groundswell of support that’s sure to be building for Paris Hilton.

“I don’t know how many years trance DJs have been No.1,” Guetta said last year. “I have a lot of respect for what those guys have done. But I’m happy for myself, and also think that maybe it gives hope to a lot of DJs playing house and electro. Our music is so big at the moment, as simultaneously there are people like me and TiĆ«sto and the Swedish House Mafia who are really crossing over, and at the same time you have this crazy underground scene that is exploding also.”

Deadmau5, Gambling "Brings Me Back Down to Earth" || Going Behind the Mask

(National Post)The impishly smiling mouse head that Joel Zimmerman wears when he performs has become a symbol for the triumph of electronic dance music. As deadmau5, the 31-year-old Niagara Falls, Ont.-born producer headlines festivals and plays gigs in stadiums; his new album, >>album title goes here<< (which is the actual title of the album), is set to debut in the Top 10 of the Billboard charts this week. So how does it feel to stand onstage atop a custom-built gleaming cube, flanked by huge video screens, playing your songs to tens of thousands of dancing fans?

“Uh, kinda lonesome,” admits Zimmerman, over Skype from Los Angeles. “But I’ve got the crowd there with me; they’ve got my back.” He has no band members to disagree with, but if something goes wrong, it’s his responsibility. “When it does, it’s not too disastrous. … It gives it a human element — technology is not infallible. As long as you’re able to give it your all, a 90% show with 300% effort is a beautiful thing.”

Deadmau5 is a complex cat. Although he’s known for being...

Kaskade Eyes New Album for Early 2013

Kaskade recently finished the Freaks of Nature tour, his "boldest career move yet" which took him to 50 cities in just 10 weeks and crowned him the first EDM artist to headline L.A.'s Staples Center.

"I'm a little crippled. I'm a little tired," says Kaskade of his post tour condition. The DJ/producer told Billboard that he somehow managed to break his foot while on the road and that he doesn't exactly remember how.

"That's how a tour is," he said. "Somewhere in there, near the end I broke my foot. I didn't think it was broken. I was just like - something's wrong with my foot. I'll be home in a month and will get it checked out."

Injuries aside, Kaskade is...
