Tiesto, Bono, Calvin Harris, Diplo fight AIDS with (RED)

"Superstar DJ Tiesto has teamed up with the anti-AIDS charity (RED) for a compilation album that includes some of EDM's biggest names, including Calvin Harris, Avicii and Diplo. Out November 27th, Dance (RED), Save Lives will also feature Tiesto's recent collaboration with Bono on a remake of U2's "Pride."

"When I went to Africa in 2006, I was struck by the devastating effect of AIDS," said Tiesto in a statement. "Now the world has an incredible chance to make sure that babies are born HIV-free by 2015, and the dance community is going to make a lot of noise to help make this happen."

The album will be accompanied by a YouTube livestream of sets from Tiesto and other Dance (Red) artists during Melbourne's Stereosonic Festival, which will be staged during World AIDS Day weekend on December 1st and 2nd.

"What Tiesto and his friends in the dance music community are bringing to this fight is invaluable," said (RED) CEO Deborah Dugan. "They bring the kind of heat that is so desperately needed to keep this issue at the top of the agenda.""

Calvin Harris Talks Red Carpet

(CBSLocal) Don’t expect to see Calvin Harris walking a red carpet anytime soon. “I hate all that stuff,” he said during an interview with 97.1 AMP Radio/Los Angeles.

Winning awards doesn’t sound like a big deal to Calvin. He’s nominated for an American Music Award along with David Guetta and Skrillex for Favorite Artist – Electronic Dance Music, but had to be reminded of his nomination.

“Awards are a very new thing to me. I hate red carpets and I hate people looking at me generally and taking pictures and stuff. I hate all that stuff.”

Calvin has run into some bad red carpet experiences before. At the MTV Video Music Awards a photographer got him confused with a similar looking actor.

“Maybe 80% of the people don’t even know who you are,” he admitted. “They say, ‘What do you do?’ You’re told to stop, and they take pictures of you, but the people taking pictures aren’t even really sure who you are.”

News and music sites used that actor’s photo for Calvin Harris stories from that point on. He joked it would be better to just use a question mark for his face.

TIESTO HAS BACK PROBLEMS FROM DJING SAYS CALVIN HARRIS

The toweringly tall DJ from Scotland, Calvin Harris stands at a mere 6 foot 5 inches and has scored massive hit songs in 2012.  Nevertheless, he's not worried about keeping pace with his ability to make mainstream hits or meet the demands of his home based progressive house fans.  Rather the artist is worried about his health, in particular his back.

In an interview with The Sun, Calvin Harris spoke of the dangers of being tall in the DJ game.  He pointed to Tiesto, who recently had to take the entire month of October off because of major back pain.  Calvin elaborated that Tiesto has incredibly injured his back because of DJing

“He did his back in and he’s been warning me,” Harris said of Tiesto, “if you’re a tall guy and you DJ you really need to watch that.”  If you were wondering Tiesto is mere inches shorter then Calvin Harris.  Calvin proceeded to explain that it is no longer of his interest to perform on improper equipment not suitable for his height. “There was one gig somewhere in Japan where the desk the mixer and CD changer were on was 3ft off the ground, ” he complained. “I was squatting and bending over just to get to the mixer — it wasn’t the best workout and I’m not taking any more chances.”

If your worried about not seeing Calvin Harris anytime fear not.  A simple addition to his rider contract, a request sheet an artist makes of a venue he plays at, for proper height tables.  He said in the interview, "a good tip is on my rider — I ask for a very tall desk so I don’t have to bend down.”

Lady Gaga slams Calvin Harris

(Examiner) Calvin Harris just learned that when you namedrop a big celebrity, it should be in a positive context. Calvin Harris was interviewing on BBC Breakfast when he revealed he decided not to work with Lady Gaga. Then he proceeded to slam the artist’s music and dig into her artistic creations. While Harris might have thought it was cute, Lady Gaga has hit back and hard on Monday morning. According to the entertainer she has never been in touch with him before and she doesn't appreciate his tone about her music.

“Never even emailed you Calvin Harris I guess it's hard to believe I write + produce my music. Cuz I'm a woman I don't know about EDM right?” tweeted Lady Gaga from her official Twitter account on Monday. “Seems to be trendy lately to talk s--t about ‘Lady Gaga’ when your albums/singles drop. Y'all should live off your own hustle."

Lady Gaga definitely has a point. Calvin Harris isn't the only artist who loves to compare themselves to other established entertainers. Most of the R&B world is still comparing themselves to Michael Jackson and many in the EDM community, just like Calvin Harris love to compare to Lady Gaga or Madonna.

While Calvin Harris obviously doesn't need to mention Lady Gaga for his interviews, it appears he might be insecure about how he stands in the music business and needs to compare. How does he compare to Lady Gaga? Well in record sales he has considerable catching up to do. And he needs a perfume too.

(New York Post) "A massive shuffle is under way among some of the world’s biggest electronic DJs, Las Vegas sources say. We hear a number of big-name DJs includingCalvin Harris and Deadmau5 — who have exclusive deals with casino mogul Steve Wynn — may be leaving the Wynn Group to go to other clubs. Sources estimate Wynn doled out $25 million to snag top names, including Harris and Deadmau5 along with DJTiesto, David Guetta and Afrojack to perform at his nightclub venues this year and to lock them in for big events like New Year’s Eve. But those contracts restrict spinners from performing in other venues, and sources tell us the DJs have grown frustrated. “They are trying to get out of their contracts because they don’t want the restrictions,” said one club insider. We also hear that other venues “are trying to make plays for these artists, and they might be successful in getting them.” Sources told us execs at Angel Management Group, which is developing the 75,000-square-foot Hakkasan restaurant opening in the MGM Grand later this year, have offered big money to Harris and Deadmau5 to perform there. A rep for the Wynn told us: “We have established wonderful partnerships and lasting relationships with members of our exclusive DJ roster, and we look forward to announcing our 2013 lineup soon.” Neil Moffitt, Angel Management Group's Chief Executive Officer told us: "We're looking forward to a great opening of Hakkasan Las Vegas in the spring of 2013 and expect to have some of the biggest names in the DJ business to help us celebrate the launch.""

PREVIEW: Nicky Romero & Calvin Harris - Iron (Dyro Remix) -Epic Electro House

The young electro protege of Hardwell- Dyro- is not slowing down after his huge Feed The Dada remix from last month. If you aren't familiar with Dyro, you've probably been living under a rock, but his songs Raid, Magno, and Metaphor are the three major ones to come off his EP co-produced with Hardwell on Revealed Records last year.

"Iron" by the power duo Nicky Romero and Calvin Harris has sat at the top of the dance charts for a while, and it qualifies as a banger with lyrics that we should expect to be shouted out during festival season next year.

The Dyro remix makes you look twice at the artist as a producer, as he's a force to be reckoned with. Somehow, he took an already heavy-syth heavy-bass drop song and made it even bassier. All heavy electro-house fans will like this remix for sure.

Dyro hasn't been seen doing much touring in the States, but if we're lucky, maybe he'll be with Hardwell on his next major tour.

“Sweet Nothing” Calvin Harris & Florence Welch || Electro-Pop Anthem

Calvin Harris, the Scottish electro dj-producer, is back at it again with a new track called "Sweet Nothing", a dance-pop song in which he collaborates with Florence Welch from Florence and the Machine. If those two names sound like they go together-- that's because they do. Calvin recently had a hit with his remix of Florence & the Machine's Spectrum - a song you likely heard at any given music festival this summer.

"Sweet Nothing" is everything we'd expect from a fusion between two different but both excellent artists. Florence's powerfully alluring vocals combined with Calvin's electro-pop beats creates a sing-along dance anthem, filled with something anyone can like; whether it's the romantic lyrics or unstoppable, uplifting, beats that Calvin is such a master at creating. Watch for this song to be dropped along Calvin's new album called "18 Months"-- a compilation of his songs over the last year and a half.  The album will be be released some time in October. Best EDM Video According to MTV is...

(MTV) LOS ANGELES — The VMAs always recognize the most important movements in pop culture. This year was no exception, with the unquestionably vital Electronic Dance Music scene taking center stage before the festivities even began. The VMA house DJ himself, Calvin Harris, nabbed the Best EDM Video Moonman for his "Feel So Close" during the pre-show leading into the main event.

When MTV News' James Montgomery announced his name, Harris was already inside, behind the DJ booth holding his Moonman in front of the crowd.

The brand-new category saw Harris squaring off against a who's-who of his peers: Swedish DJ Avicii, who was nominated for "Levels"; American/Canadian duo Duck Sauce and their "Big Bad Wolf"; Martin Solveig's "Night Out"; and Skrillex with "First of the Year (Equinox)."

EDM was on fire all year, and MTV created the Best Electronic Dance Music Video category in recognition of that fact. VMA producers set out to adopt the sound, spirit and energy of EDM in other ways, too. The audience/performer give-and-take helped inspire the open floor plan at Staples Center, allowing the 1,500 plenty of room to dance.

Earlier in the week, Harris gave three lucky Pepsi NOW contest winners a taste of his "epic" plans for the VMAs during closed-door backstage rehearsals.

The "Feel So Close" clip was directed by Harris' frequent collaborator Vincent Haycock, who has worked with Spiritualized and MSTRKRFT. "Feel So Close" was the second single from Harris' forthcoming album 18 Months, which is due in October and has spawned four singles thus far.

The video for Harris' collaboration with Rihanna, "We Found Love," is up against clips from Drake, Gotye, Katy Perry and M.I.A. for Video of the Year.

(Stoneyroads) Although we’d speculate that Calvin Harris is more a pop star than anything these days, his roots did grow in the dancegenre which has been assured by some notable features on his ‘twitter detailed’ forthcoming album ’18 Months’.

Aside from the predictably weak contributions from Kelis, Rihanna and Ne-Yo comes danicer elements thanks to fated Big Day Out performer Nicky Romeo, Example and even funny man Dillon Francis.

With a release date slated for October 29th, Australians will probably be close to the first to hear new material at this years Stereosonic Festival.

Best EDM Artists Of 2011 MTV EDITION || EDM Boston

You didn't think MTV would stay out of the EDM game did you?? Or think Sway was alive for that matter?

**UPDATE** THE TOP @ SPOTS HAVE BEEN REVEILED

MTV has decided to rank the EDM artists and apparently Sway is still kickin it.  MTV set up a panel of people that work at the channel to rank the artists.  First off I'm surprise anyone at MTV even listens to music these days, yet alone EDM.  The people they had rank the artists were: MTV News' Akshay Bhansali, Adam Stewart, MTV Coordinator of Music & Talent, Rawley Bornstein, and MTV World Music Director Micah McKinney.  The group sat down for a roundtable discussion — moderated by MTV News' Sway Calloway — about the biggest players this year and crowned their top 10. The critics are knowledgable about the artists and its interesting to hear what they have to say.

Below, EDMBoston reveals their #10 through #3.

10. Martin Solveig
When Irv Gotti stopped by MTV News' "RapFix Live" in October, he joked, "We're just one record away from Kanye or Jay [being like]: [sings hook to Solveig's 'Hello'] 'I just came to say hello — Hov!' " Gotti was kidding, but it's true. Rap dudes beware: Songs like "Hello" and guys like Martin have seen such widespread success that the hip-hop industry, which has long enjoyed club and radio dominance, is shook. In addition to being a technically superior producer and DJ, Solveig has also proven to the world that he has a sense of humor. His "Smash" video series — including "Hello," "Initial S.H.E," "Ready 2 Go" and "Big in Japan" — are some of the funniest and most well-produced clips of any genre. Kudos to Martin and his "manager" Lafaille for making us laugh and dance in 2011.

9. Tiësto
Veteran DJ/producer Tiësto might not be trance anymore, but judging by his popularity, fans don't seem to care. How else do you set a record for the largest single DJ event — 26,000 fans attended his Carson, California, show — in U.S. history? T had hit collabos this year with Mark Knight, Hardwell, Diplo and, oh, Kanye West (sure, the Yeezy track hasn't been released yet, but everyone's heard it!). And if you can't produce like Tiësto, at least now you can look like him: The EDM titan's Club Life clothing line just hit select stores in New York and L.A.

8. Kaskade
Coming off a massive 2010 highlighted by Dynasty, Kaskade watched as his 2011 studio album, Fire & Ice, quickly became a staple in a healthy EDM diet. With features from Skrillex and Dada Life, and even vocals from rising star Skylar Grey, you'd be hard-pressed to find music lovers who couldn't identify with or enjoy his breezy music in one way or another. The Illinois native pioneered the Identity Festival, which brought real-deal dance to America's small cities. He also conquered Las Vegas' day and nightlife and was named America's Top DJ of 2011. Not a bad year for Mr. Ryan Raddon, not a bad year at all.

7. Calvin Harris
2011 was a marquee year for this Scotsman. Riding high on the success of Ready for the Weekend, Harris "Bounce"-ed and "Awooga"-ed with his adoring EDM fans the world over. He also infiltrated the mainstream byteaming up with Rihanna for a pair of hit collabos: the chart-topping "We Found Love" and "Where Have You Been." As he gears up for his third studio album, Harris' presence in EDM and pop culture is undeniable, and at this pace, he'll be unstoppable in 2012.

6. Avicii
This year, Avicii underscored his place as dance music's "Piano Man" (sorry, Bill Joel fans!). It started with "Blessed" (featuring Shermanology), continued with "Fade Into Darkness" (and Leona Lewis' "Collide," let's be real) and capped off with the eagerly awaited release of "Levels." Yes, Avicii's keys and vocals went pop in '11, and Flo Rida would certainly back us up on this as his Etta James vocal is sampled on Flo's "Good Feeling." To close out the year, Sweden's Tim Bergling (stage names: Avicii, Tim Berg, Tom Hangs) is nominated for the Best Dance Recording Grammy with David Guetta for DG's "Sunshine." But before that Big Apple ball drops, Avicii will rock New York with a sold-out New Year's Eve show.

5. Afrojack
Holland's towering bleep-bender put on a spectacle of versatility in the past 12 months. Afro-beats scored monster mainstream U.S. radio singles for Beyoncé, Chris Brown and Pitbull. And then there's his EDM game: Nearly a dozen collabos bearing his name charted in Beatport.com's top 10, with Nervo, Steve Aoki, R3hab and Quintino onboard for a few. He wrapped up the year with a Grammy nom and the earth-shaking single "Lionheart," and we can only pray he'll deliver a video for it in '12 ... with a Jean-Claude Van Damme cameo.

4. Swedish House Mafia
Dubbed by MTV News as the "holy trinity of house music," the rock stars of dance wereeverywhere this year, from "Miami 2 Ibiza," Las Vegas to Brazil and all points in between. Not only did they succeed as a unified front, but Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso also soared as individual brands. And thanks to their Size, Axtone and Refune record labels, stellar acts like Thomas Gold, Swanky Tunes, Junior Sanchez, Third Party, Max Vangeli, AN21 and buzzworthy young rookie Alesso are on the verge of becoming household names. On the heels of a historic show at New York's iconic Madison Square Garden this week, and a 2012 Grammy nod for "Save the World," the Swedish Flag has been firmly planted in the American EDM soil.

3. deadmau5
"4x4=12" cranked out hit after hit after hit. He nailed well over 100 live tour dates on the Meowingtons Hax Tour, earned RIAA gold with "Ghosts N Stuff" and headlined the traditionally all-rock Lollapalooza fest. Did we mention the wonder born Joel Zimmerman turned a skyscraper into a 4-Dexperience in London and bid farewell to a Playmate? I mean, who else can say they did that? The dude has balls N stuff.



2. David Guetta
David Guetta's career has definitely gone pop this year — including the radio hits "Where Them Girls At" (featuring Nicki Minaj and Flo Rida) and "Without You" (featuring Usher) — but for EDM purists, his Nothing but the Beat had plenty to offer too, like stellar co-productions with Afrojack ("Lunar" and "The Future") and Avicii (on the Grammy-nominated "Sunshine"). DJ Mag crowned Guetta the #1 DJ on the planet, and he headlined the world's biggest festival's, including Belgium's Tomorrowland, Miami's Ultra Music Festival and Las Vegas' Electric Daisy Carnival. Guetta's American Music Awards performance with Minaj seems to indicate that "Turn Me On" will be the next single from Nothing but the Beat, and fans can expect a shocking new video (and much more, we're sure) early next year.
1. Skrillex
MTV's EDM Artist of 2011 scored a whopping five Grammy nominations this year, including being the first DJ to land a Best New Artist nod. Indeed, Skrill's musical background — both on his own and as a member of his former group, From First to Last — has carried over into his brand of fiery electronica. Skrillex has garnered an audience the world over that includes ravers, house heads and rockers alike. In today's laptop generation of music, Skrillex is the new "rock." From his remix of Benny Benassi and Gary Go's "Cinema" to the recent Avicii pop song "Le7els" (not officially released yet), Skrillex dropped massive re-workings in '11, in addition to his More Monsters and Sprites EP. He scored video games, produced records for Korn, launched his own OWSLA label and hit almost every major festival in the States, including Coachella and Lollapalooza. An exceptional catalog of releases coupled with an incessant touring schedule has made Skrillex the biggest EDM star of the year, and in 2012, he plans to tour 322 of the 365 days.
