Big Gigantic at the House of Blues Boston Review

The lights went dark at the House of Blues on Friday, February 15, as Big Gigantic finished their last song, but not a fan in the crowd turned for the exits.  The energy was exploding around the room as chants of “one more song” and “Big Gigantic” lifted from the floor, nobody was ready for the night to be over as a room full of fans begged for more.  Several minutes later, after a short lived break, Dom Lalli and Jeremy Salken of Big Gigantic stormed back onto a dark stage in an explosion of light.  Moments later, the silence was split by Dom’s beautiful saxophone as they dropped “Fantastic” on an amazing crowd.  As the song came to a close, the crowd still wanted more, and Big Gigantic was prepared to give it to them.  Dom threw on some heavy dubstep and let the House of Blues rage out one last time before calling it a night and sending a mass of satisfied fans to the streets.

Nowhere in electronic dance music can you find a live saxophone player on stage except at a Big Gigantic show.

The first time I heard Big Gigantic, I had just emerged onto the floor of the Hampton Coliseum after a 13-hour, 615-mile odyssey down the east coast from Boston to Virginia for BassLights 2012. However we didn't know the prize that would lie on the otherside of the 10 mile backup to get to the venue. The very first sounds that washed over us were the funky Saxophone rhythms of Big Gigantic. Every ounce of stress I had been feeling up until that moment dissipated, like vapor, and I was carried away on the soaring notes from Dominic Lalli's saxophone.

Dominic & Jeremy combined to unleash a wall of sound that feels both unhinged and flowing. Lalli's sax weaves through every tune, guiding the melody, while Salken's drumming drives alongside the thumping, bass-heavy beats.

It's incredibly refreshing to hear two instruments wielded so masterfully over funky groovey electronic dance beats.  For evidence of the honeyed funkiness, see "Sky High," a track that features one of Lalli's most soulful sax solos over a beat that thumps with bass.

If you like Pretty lights this should be right up your alley. While they sound similar, Big Gigantic has a unique sound of their own. They infuse a saxophone into their tracks to balance the electronic fluxes and lasers that are also present.  They do away with the hip-hop beats that Pretty lights focuses on.  Its in interesting hodgepodge of music that sounds like its on its way in the EDM industry.
