UMass Amherst Cancels EDM Events on Campus

umass edm

UMass has made an unprecedented move to protect students by banning EDM events on campus. NV Concepts had booked massive acts such as Above & Beyond were for October 4th and Pretty Lights for October 30. However, these events won't be taking place anymore. You can read the full email that went out to students below. We will continue to monitor the situation and let you know details as they come in.

A short time ago, the University cancelled the Return to Fantazia, an
electronic dance music event scheduled at the Mullins Center. We were
gravely concerned about a rash of MDMA, Ecstasy or Molly-related
overdoses and deaths in the Northeast related to these events.
Unfortunately, the factors that led to cancellation of the Sept. 21
concert have not positively shifted. In fact, we have grown even more
concerned about ongoing reports of overdoses at such events.

The Molly-taking culture at these shows is real and now exceedingly
dangerous to the health and safety of concert attendees. As a result,
the University is cancelling Above & Beyond, scheduled for Oct. 4, and
Pretty Lights, scheduled for Oct. 30.

While it is true that college students should be trusted to take
responsibility for their own actions, our administrative and student
leadership must also take responsibility for creating a safe and
positive environment that encourages and cultivates good
decision-making. That is ongoing work and critical to building a
community of care and active engagement.

We have broadly shared information about resources and promoted
campus-wide awareness on the dangers of Molly, an illegal, manufactured
drug banned by our Code of Student Conduct. For more detailed
information on Molly and its side effects go to
www.drugabuse.gov/publications/drugfacts/mdma-ecstasy-or-molly, or
contact University Health Services, the Center for Health
Promotion,
Dean of Students Office or the UMass Amherst Police Department.

We know EDM concerts are not the only place a student can use Molly or
other drugs, but the evidence is clear that Molly use is closely linked
to EDM events. We certainly hope the deliberative process the
administrative staff and the Student Government Association took in
evaluating this matter highlights the seriousness of the issues and our
commitment to a safe university environment. The educational efforts
will continue. The campus-wide discussions on the use of Molly, alcohol
and other drugs will also continue. Despite the disappointment some
students will feel, we hope this is an opportunity to hone in on the
values that we aspire to as a community: care, civil discourse and
meaningful engagement in each other’s lives.

Students who have purchased tickets for the Above & Beyond and Pretty
Lights shows can obtain refunds at the point of purchase.

Interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Campus Life

Pretty Lights Electric Zoo 2012 Review

By Shikhar

Even though Pretty Lights is playing at the Garden in Boston for Halloween, it was not enough to keep me from seeing his complete set at Zoo (it’s just a good rule of thumb most people should follow: Nighttime + festival closing + Pretty lights =  DO NOT MISS, well maybe for Daft Punk).

The main stage was nowhere close to empty yet not so packed that you could not move a muscle.  The perfect formula for what I like best. I decided to observe the opening of the set from the grass right outside of main stage and soaked in his awesome setup in its entirety. Pretty Lights slowed the entire momentum down to that of hip hop and hit the crowd hard with his vocal samplers combined with rough hard hitting tones.

Let me take this space to just mention my growing admiration for Pretty Lights fans, people who love pretty lights are fanatically in love with him and that passion just oozes out on the floor when Pretty Lights, aka Derek Vincent Smith, takes the stage.

When he dropped Total Fascination the crowd’s reaction was priceless, it literally looked as if a 10,000 volt current ran through the veins of every single person in attendance. No one bothered to remember how tired they were at 10pm after raging since 1pm, everyone just jumped, twisted, and gyrated their body to the beats and sang along. The only thing that was equally good as the music Derek was spitting out, was the crazy light show going on. Instead of the regular strobes and led’s shooting at the crowd, Pretty Lights was wowing audiences with his signature shapes and views of cities, skyscrapers and lasers, which formed a cloud over the crowd.

He kept going for the majority of the hour non-stop with other hits that included ‘still night’ and ‘finally moving’ with occasional shout outs to New York and Electric Zoo. However, the best part of the night was at the very end when he just stopped the music and had a heart to heart with the fans.  Derek asked every one if he should hit the Zoo with another song and boy did he HIT them with a song. Music cuts back in with the intro to ‘I know the truth’ and the entire crowd, with yours truly included, literally lost their mind. Everyone sang along to the vocals and that howl before the drop was one of the loudest I’ve heard live in person at a show.

The show was everything I had imagined a perfect Pretty Lights would be like, now I am pumped to see him again in Boston!

Pretty Lights pushes limits

Electric Zoo if officially over #sadface However, the next BIG show Bostonians have to look forward to is Pretty Lights show at the TD Garden, which features Eliot Lipp as the opener.  Take a read into his live set and what Pretty Lights is doing to push the limits of live sets!

(Missoulian) Derek Vincent Smith, who’s better known by his stage name Pretty Lights, has made no secret he wants to push the boundaries of the electronic dance music genre and take the it to places it hasn’t yet gone.
He seems to be making good on that promise, beginning with the live show he’s headlining “The Illumination Tour,” which continues into mid-November.
On earlier tours, Smith brought along a live drummer who played live beats to the music Smith was performing from his on-stage audio setup. But he found that limited his ability to improvise songs on the fly.
“I tried to communicate with my drummer with sign language for awhile and tried to keep everybody on the same page,” Smith said in a late-August phone interview. “(But) I realized I was really holding myself back as far as how I did push the improvisation of the electronic music that I had composed.”
Having a drummer also limited Smith’s ability to coordinate visual elements of his show with the music he performed.
“I really wanted to connect my control of the music to the control of the (visual) aspect of the production of the show,” he said. “So the last tour we figured out how to connect my technology, the devices I use to make music and control, to have video linked to each clip that I would trigger.”
The improvisational element of the Pretty Lights live show is something Smith has been developing throughout a career that has seen his popularity mushroom since the 2006 release of his debut CD, “Taking Up Your Precious Time.”
In releasing that debut, Smith took the unusual step of allowing anyone to download the CD from his Pretty Lights website.
While this might have cost Smith some income from record sales, he thought making his music free would get...

‘With Your Friends Festival’ announced by Skrillex & Pretty Lights

Skrillex and Pretty Lights have come together to create a brand new festival (because, you know, we really need more of those). The pair of DJs will join Nas,Santigold and a host of other EDM artists for the “With Your Friends Festival” in Nashville on October 26 and 27.

12th Planet, Dillon Francis, Michal Menert and TOKiMONSTA round out the festival’s lineup, and Nas will be performing with a nine-piece band. According to the press release, the fest will take place on the waterfront of downtown Nashville, and
“several private events will ensue post-festival, both at an undisclosed terrestrial location and on a river boat.” So basically you better be in the know so you can see Skrillex spin on a riverboat.

Tickets for the event will go on sale on Wednesday August 29 at 10 a.m. CST, and will be available in general admission and VIP versions. There is no word yet on how much those suckers will set you back. For more information go here.

Does this sound cool or just like another festival where all the same people are performing? Will you be waiting in rapt anticipation for tickets to go on sale? Tell us in the comments.

New Electro-Hop || BIG GIGANTIC – NOCTURNAL [FREE ALBUM DOWNLOAD}

If you like Pretty lights this should be right up your alley. While they sound similar, Big Gigantic has a unique sound of their own. They infuse a saxophone into their tracks to balance the electronic fluxes and lasers that are also present.  They do away with the hip-hop beats that Pretty lights focuses on.  Its in interesting hodgepodge of music that sounds like its on its way in the EDM industry.

My top 5 tracks of the album are The Uprising, Rise and Shine, Nocturnal, It’s Going Down, and Eyes Closed. Have a listen to this genre breaking sound:
