5 Biggest Things Evolution 101.7FM Radio Will Do To Boston

Evolution 101.7 FM is disrupting the Boston EDM FM radio community/market, as Clear Channel media launches one of their riskiest plans to date in our community. As we all know in the EDMBoston community, EDM has made quite the ruckus over the last two years in the mainstream. After such commercial success and viability in tv commercials, comes Clear Channel with an EDM station in the Boston radio market. Whether it's good or bad is entirely another debate, albeit something big is going to happen. That got us thinking.
What are the possibilities for this radio station and what does it mean for the Boston area? Below are our 5 biggest things 101.7 Radio will do to Boston.
1. Enlarged Music Festival
The alternative is the radio station will feed into last years iHeart Radio Festival, to make it larger. Deadmau5 and Swedish House Mafia, all formative bookings, will no longer be the only ones at this festival as a side stage would be added if Clear Channel desides not to go the dedicated EDM festival route.

Boston EDM FM Radio Station Launches - Making Country's First
This proliferation of electronic music in Boston hasn’t gone unnoticed. Among the people paying attention are the executives at Clear Channel Media. This week they took the risk and launched Evolution radio on FM 101.7. If that station is familiar to you it is the old home of indie rock station, WFNX(now relegated to online radio).
Evolution, 101.7 is Clear Channel Media’s first broadcasted EDM station in the country. It launched yesterday (December 20 at 6pm) on 101.7, which is now renamed WHBA, with a special hour-long program by Pete Tong. Pete Tong (the mastermind behind the infamous Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1).
Now Evolution radio isn’t exactly unique to Boston. The radio station will be a broadcast extension of the popular online station Evolution on iHeartRadio. Nevertheless, this station will feature a two hour daily show from Pete Tong called “All gone Pete Tong”. In the program Pete will feature his essential New Tune of the Week, as well as the hottest tracks from the global Top 100 chart on Beatport.com. Monday-Friday 7-9pm. In addition, we will be spoiled with programs from Diplo, Wolfgang Gartner, Fatboy Slim, Manufactured Superstars, Paul Van Dyk, Roger Sanchez, Congorock, Dillon Francis, John Dahlback, and the list goes on.

We are extremely happy that Boston has been so blessed for this experiment. We are hoping Evolution radio sees a big jolt in numbers upfront to encourage Clear Channel Media to build an Evolution radio Studio in Boston. If that happens you can guarantee that we will be blessed much like NYC is with the SiriusXM studio and the DJs that visit that with frequency.
Nevertheless, it’s time to tune in and see what kind of quality Clear Channel Media is throwing at us on Evolution Radio Boston EDM Radio.

Clear Channel Bets on Electronic Dance Music, Signing Up Pete Tong
My oh My! How exciting is it that we will be able to hear that much more of Pete Tong? Imagine if this is successful and he moved his essential selection state side? How bout that for something you never saw coming?!?
(New York Times) Clear Channel Communications is turning to the electronic dance music craze to help build its online brand, iHeartRadio, with a new channel featuring Pete Tong, the British D.J. and radio personality who has been one of the genre’s biggest taste makers for two decades.
The channel, called Evolution, will start on Monday, joining iHeartRadio’s hundreds of online stations. Its first week will be loosely structured, with Mr. Tong playing music and inviting guests. The full, around-the-clock programming schedule begins Nov. 19, with “All Gone Pete Tong,” a two-hour live show from Mr. Tong each weeknight; shows by star dance D.J.’s like Diplo, Wolfgang Gartner and Fatboy Slim; and a rundown of the Top 100 hits on Beatport, the leading digital retailer for electronic dance music (or E.D.M., the catch-all name that the genre’s leaders have grudgingly begun to accept).

Steve Angello - Yeah || Pete Tong debut
When a track gets played out on Pete Tong's radio show on friday nights it means one of two things, its a massive track or it's making its official premier/release. Steve Angello is the latest to release a track on Tong's show and in doing so he set his original "Yeah" into the wild.
The big room tune features purging dramatic synths that roll in a progression of intense building tension. Angello is already using it in his sets and even played it out when he hit Ocean Club in August.

Elton john Interview by Pete Tong at Ibiza 123
Who would have thought a legend such as Elton John would be getting into the dance scene in 2012? We never did and we're damn glad that he's involved with Ibiza 123!
Take a listen to this fascinating interview he did with Pete Tong. In it Elton discusses his love for electronic music and talks shop with Pete with finesse and intelligence. In it Elton John also discusses his desire for his songs to be remixed with "people that know what the hell their doing" so his music can keep up with the times. However, he didn't produce the remixes himself because he said he has little experience with electronic production and knew an experienced person would achieve a much better result.

Pete Tong: "Don’t sell out dance music to big business"
(musicweek.com)"Following a hugely successful 10 days in Miami for The Ultra Music Festival and Winter Music Conference last month, the genre is more powerful than ever back in the country where the journey began, the USA. Just over a year ago many of us were babbling in admiration at how David Guetta appeared to have cracked the secret code and broken onto mainstream American radio. We all predicted that EDM (Electronic Dance Music, you can’t call it “house” anymore!) was going to explode. Twelve months later that impact seems to be tenfold.
There was a time when the scene needed endorsement by stars of her ilk, but now DeadMau5 has more social media clout than Madonna. How times have changed. This summer Avicii, Afrojack and Kaskade are all doing 30-plus date arena tours, as Las Vegas hotels boast 50 exclusive DJ residencies and 300,000 people are predicted to attend the Electric Daisy Carnival in June.
Whilst David Guetta’s success story follows reasonably conventional industry rules it’s incredible to think that Swedish House Mafia – who haven’t yet made an artist album – look set to fill the Milton Keynes Bowl in July. The closer you look, the more remarkable the feats. Brazil, India and China are warming up. The game has well and truly changed, forever.
But success inevitably attracts attention - and now numerous extremely wealthy individuals, big business and VC funds are eager to buy into the EDM action. If allowed to run riot with their corporate machinery, these same people will destroy the scene. Wikipedia the word ‘stampede’ and I think you’ll get the picture.

Looking back to the first wave of dance music can teach us an interesting lesson. In 1988 I was involved in bringing house music from Chicago and New York back to the UK. We had No.1 records and gave birth to Club Culture, whilst America kept it in the closet because they thought it was music for the gay scene. We enjoyed our own boom decade but the scene eventually suffered a major setback in 2000 when the money generated couldn’t sustain the huge infrastructure and investment. Clubs, labels and magazines closed. DJs migrated off around the world.
The money at stake now dwarfs what was on the table back then, but the history should come as a warning shot to all about selling the genre short and being seduced by cheque book-waving billionaires with no care or vision for the long term game. Even at the peak of all the excitement in Miami last month, the LA District Attorney was arresting two of the countries leading ‘rave’ promoters along with some of the management team at the LA Coliseum on charges of bribery and corruption - charges they both deny.
None of this success would have happened without the long-term nurturing of the dance scene’s clubs and festivals. There would be no David Guetta or Swedish House Mafia without the clubs in Ibiza. And there would be no stickiness to EDM’s crossover in the US without the years of development on the underground of the festivals like EDC, Ultra, HARD, Electric Zoo, the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, Monster Massive and Nocturnal.
We need the underground as much as we need Las Vegas - maybe more so. Without a place for all these ideas to develop and come to fruition you won’t get the end result."
