Local EDM duo Butlertron fine-tunes its sound

So incredibly excited that we were quoted in the Boston Globe! #Progress

(BostonGlobe) You’ll hear plenty of DJs dropping dubstep into their sets around the city (more still complaining about the ones who do), but not quite as many producing it themselves of late. Which is why “Promise Me,” the standout among a series of singles released this year by the Boston-area production duo and DJ team Butlertron is such a welcome change of pace. Mostly because it’s not awful — no easy feat these days.
The track, produced by Mike Short of Stoneham and Mike Bell of Melrose, isn’t quite so simple to classify, however. While it throbs and surges with peaks and valleys of bass static, it veers off into chippy synth runs that sound pulled from a frantically side-scrolling 8-bit adventure game before exploding with ascending house chords. The package is rounded off with a sultry but minimal vocal track that places it squarely on the popular side of the line drawn between snooty chin-strokers and those aiming for the throb of packed dance floor.
Likewise, “Straight Energy” gurgles on a squiggly bass line and upstroke beat while guest vocalist Sarah Lachambre adds a soulful, romantic vocal that makes it well suited for falling in love in the zero-G suspension of the bass drop.

Mimosa Lashes out at Boston Show

Budweiser's Made in America tour stopped in Boston last night and made quite the ruckus, according to attendees and multiple sources.  The headliner for the evening was Mimosa and he received support from The M Machine and Joe Bermudez.  While the free event seemed to go off without a hitch in the beginning, Mimosa put the finishing touches on the evening to end otherwise.

When the headline DJ, at least for that night, came out Budweiser deployed a slew of free Foam Glow sticks into the crowd.  Everyone was having a good time rocking to the music and bouncing around.  Some were evening tossing the free glow sticks around.  Others though decided to throw some sticks on stage at Mimosa as he performed.  Most veteran artist would have brushed it aside and laughed it off.  However, Mimosa took it upon himself to right the wrong.  He lashed out at the crowd, stopped the music, and threatened to fight anyone that was throwing the sticks.  This bizzarro act was something straight out of E! entertainment news circa Charlie Sheen ABC explosion.  Fans didn't take lightly to it and continued to throw the glow sticks at him.  At that time Mimosa declared to the crowd "I'm out" and stormed off the stage.

What on earth was going on?!?

After thinking the night was over, to our surprise the begrudgingly Mimosa made his way back out on stage.  He declared he was there for "peace and love" and that he "would fight anyone that threw glow sticks in the alley".  It was a buzzkill for the night and we were not happy.  It's a good thing the show was free.

Ultimately we feel bad for the fans but more so for Budweiser.  Here's a company trying to hook us up with a free concert and it becomes a shit show.  I just hope they brave the weather and return next year with a revamped show free of Mimosa

Top 5 DJ List: EDMBoston's Kyle weighs in

By Kyle:

With less then two weeks to go in DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs poll, we at EDMBoston decided to get our acts together and will be letting you know the staff's top 5 artists through the next couple days.

Here is Kyle's Top 5 DJ's of 2012

1. Derek Vincent Smith aka Pretty Lights

has been a part of the emerging EDM scene for a while now and can be attributed to the major growth recently. After dropping out of UC Boulder, Smith could be found opening such acts as STs9 and the Disco Biscuits as well as playing festivals including Rothbury(Electric Forest) and Camp Bisco. Smith went on to start his own label, Pretty Lights Music, which includes a star studded list of artists including Paul Baskc, Michael Menert, break science, Gramatik and Elliot Lipp. All Pretty Lights music is available for free download on prettylightsmusic.com. Remember that Avicci song that was just oh so popular? You're probably humming it as you read. Well Derek actually sampled the song first before sometimes I get a good feeling became an EDM anthem. Smith has been on the leading edge for a while and can be found headlining Electric Zoo and North Coast Festival in the upcoming weeks as well as his Fall Illumination Tour hitting over 40 cities, including Boston at TD Garden on Halloween.

2. Bassnectar

One of the most high energy DJs in the game today. With a cult like following built up around his raw persona, Lorin Ashton never seems to disappoint whether performing live, releasing a new album or even just a free mix he is releasing to his die hard fans. Bassnectar has a way of reading the crowd like no other DJ I have ever seen and it reflects in all
His performances.

3. Afrojack

He has been on fire since 2010 and nobody has been able to put this guy out. Winner of two Grammys and many more accolades, Nick van der Wall has a skillset unparalleled to others within the same category. His music is so unique with his progressive style it is easy to see why he is always at the top of the charts and headlining such festivals as EDC.

4. Armin Van Buren

He's been ranked among the top DJs for a while now and you really have to see this man perform
Live to fully grasp his epicness. After seeing AVB for the first time at the Main Stage at EDC NYC I had to check him out the day after when he headlined the State of Trance tent. Both shows will be remembered as one of the best live performances I have seen to date

5. Diplo

He has surely made a name for himself among EDM superstars. I have been listening to Diplo since his album entitled "Florida" and have loved his beats since. Diplo is featured on BBC radio 1 weekly with his Diplo and friends show which features many artists from his label, Mad Decent, as well as many other artists. Diplo also performs with Major Lazer and is constantly crossing over genres, most recently creating tracks for Snoop Dogg's new Jamaican inspired album under the name Snoop Lion.

Michael Phelps Playlist for Olympics

The greatest olympian of all time sat down with rollingstone to explain the Michael Phelps playlist for the olympics.
Lil Wayne, "I'm Me": One of the songs from the 2008 games I listened to. Just the name of the song made sense to me, given where I'm at right now, and how I felt at these Games.
Afrojack and Steve Aoki, "No Beef": Just a great song. Fast beat, really gets you going and fired up.
Avicii, "Levels": Swimming a multiple-event program requires you to conserve and manage emotional and physical energy, so you've got the goods when you need it most. It's all about levels.
Young Jeezy, "Go Getta": Another song I listened to in 2008. Dream, plan, reach, baby – gotta go get it!
Lil Wayne, "Right Above It": That song made me want to finish strong and look forward to life after swimming.

AcousticaELectronica Review: Sexy, Mysterious, Inviting

By Maxwell:

For electronic dance music fans, a well played DJ set is akin to a voyage of fantasy.  In that fantasy, you are taken along a journey filled with emotional highs and lows in which the DJ unfolds a musical story customized to the crowds desires and expectations.

AcousticaElectronica brings the aforementioned notion to life and makes the figurative fantasy into reality.  The newly created concept by ToUch Performance Art blends a live DJ set, by The Wig, with a theatrical performance, opera singing, and live musicians.   It’s a hodgepodge of the arts never seen before, and only electronic music is capable of successfully tying together this myriad of arts.

The show left EDMBoston wowed that something this artistically avant-garde was bold enough to premier in Boston and return for a second go.  AcousticaElectronica originally premiered during the
Together Festival back in March.  AcousticaElectronica brings something new to the EDM game that stretches the live music experience past an auditory experience to a new visual dance experience.

AcousticaElectronica leaves no doubt that you are entering an alternative experience from the moment you walk through the Oberon Theatre’s entrance.  The performance hall feels like a traditional nightclub, yet you also know/feel like it’s a theatre.  The confusing identity crisis subsidies as the opening DJ warms up the crowd on the open dance floor.  Two go-go dancers entertain the crowd with draw dropping sexy manipulations of their body.  The feeling in the room is dark and mysterious yet strangely inviting.  Sexy house, minimal, and tech house tunes like “I Get Deep” (Joris Vorn This is Not  A Remix) vibe throughout the room.  While the audience is loosening up, Go-Go dancers expedite the process by inviting crowd members on to their raised platform boxes, in the middle of the dance floor to dance with them.

The room is laid out similar to...
