there's an art to throwing cakes ~Steve Aoki
1/04/2013 10:30:00 AM
steve aoki
(Dose) He hurls at least two per gig, usually at fans begging to be smacked and smeared with the frosted delights. One video of Aoki caking ecstatic girls at Miami's Ultra Music Festival is now up to 130,000 views on YouTube.
"Creamy white cakes are the best," says the long-tressed DJ/producer from Los Angeles, Calif. behind such obnoxious electro jams as I'm in the House, No Beef and Livin' My Love.
"Fluffy and soft cakes with lots of frosting for shrapnel effect. It feels good, trust me, I've been caked. It's like getting hit with a pillow -- except with sugar. It's not nice to clean, though. It takes 30 minutes to wash out of my hair."
Aoki estimates he's tossed 1,120 cakes over the span of two years and 560 gigs. (He won't throw any chocolate concoctions, because the aftermath looks like ... well, you can figure it out.)
"These ideas sometimes just come up off the top of my head," says Aoki, who also likes to spray champagne and ride a rubber dingy over his crowds. "I woke up from a cake dream -- 'Holy s---, that's a good idea!'
If he comes off as the court jester of electronic dance music, he can blame his late father. Rocky, who died in 2008, was a showman -- a musician, wrestler, Lothario, and the founder of a chain of Japanese restaurants called Benihana.
Yet Aoki also shares his dad's drive. As silly as the DJ/producer may be onstage, he's serious about his...

Steve Aoki & Michael Phelps Go White Raver-Rafting
11/27/2012 02:00:00 PM

(Craveonline) Dim Mak Mondays at Club XS on Las Vegas’ strip have become a notorious spot to see Aoki’s antics at their craziest. Known for throwing cake and spraying champagne, the DJ is also noted for his on-stage celebrity guests. The most recent guest was Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps. Steve Aoki sets the scene.
“He’s the man. It was actually the first time I’d ever met him face to face. We have a few mutual friends, like poker friends, and Soul Republic. We’re connected through them. He came out and was like “I love No Beef. I used to play it before races.” He came out with me on stage, we ‘white-raver rafted’ over the crowd. I was a bit worried. I was like “all right Michael, you go and do it on your own.” And he was like “No man! We do this together!” There were a lot of girls right there and they were in heels. But I jumped in first; he was at the tail end. Then 10 seconds later I look back and he’s already out. I think he capsized.”
If you can’t imagine it, here’s a picture of the ‘whiteraver rafting’ from Aoki’s instagram. Rafting over a sea of fans isn’t the only thing that Aoki and Phelps share. Aoki elaborates, “Right after my set, we played [poker] from like 4 in the morning ’til 10am straight. He’s still probably at the table.” No stranger to placing a bet or two, Stryker asked who Aoki would rather sit at a poker table with; Phil “the Unabomber” Laak or Antonio “The Magician” Esfandiari.

Aoki laughed, replying, “Both those guys are good friends. Antonio actually taught me. I would have to say Antonio because I know him better but at the same time I don’t. We have prop bets going on throughout the whole year. We made one that actually changed my lifestyle. It’s 12 workouts every month and every time you miss it, you play $100. It’s a gentleman’s bet. It’s just your word and you stick to it.”

STEVE AOKI "MOST POPULAR DJS DON'T HAVE ANY ALBUMS OUT"
11/08/2012 04:00:00 PM
steve aoki
(Mixmag) In a new interview, Dim Mak boss and notorious cake hurler Steve Aoki claimed that it's not necessary to release an album every year in order to be successful. He also shed some light in his upcoming releases.
According to the DJ, you only have to release a few songs a year to maintain your status and credibility.
"The great thing about the dance/EDM world is it's not like you need an album every year. You just have to release a few songs that translate to a global audience. And that’s why some of the best, most popular DJs don’t even have an album out," he said.
Aoki went on to praise chart-topper Avicii for his single releases over the past few years: "Avicii doesn't have an album out but his music translates across cultures and languages to people all over the world."
As well as talking about the EDM scene, Aoki also spoke about his forthcoming collaborations and releases.
"I have a collaboration with Knife Party called 'Piledriver' coming out and a record called 'Singularities' coming out at some point," he said.
So there you go kids. Make a banger. Claim world domination. Get a licence to chuck cream cakes at squealing teenage girls. Sorted.

Steve Aoki Hospitalized for Neck Injury
10/30/2012 11:00:00 AM

Yesterday we reported an epic Steve Aoki stage dive fail. We are sad to learn that that very stage dive also hospitalized the artist at the Ashford Presbyterian Community hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico over the weekend. The hospital visit resulted from Steve's awkward landing on a trampoline set below the stage. That awkward landing projected the artist diagonally off the trampoline and twisted his neck.
At the time the neck injury occurred, Steve Aoki was ironically wearing a T-shirt that said “Watch your neck”.
Fortunately for Steve Aoki Neck injury, he was released from the hospital the following day free of any major injury.

Steve Aoki, Knife Party Collaborate on Track
10/19/2012 01:00:00 PM
steve aoki
(MTV) Knife Party and Steve Aoki have big news (though virtually everything the hard-electronic music stars do tends to be): They've got a "phat" collaboration and video on the way.
"I wrote probably my phattest banging record with Knife Party:'Pile Driver,' " Steve Aoki told MTV News recently.
While it may not be a complete revelation to those who have attended Aoki or KP shows this summer (they've been giving the track a healthy test run), the coming together of these two explosive dance music brands is something to relish.
We predicted 2012 to be a game-changing one for the electro-house and bass kings Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen (Knife Party). And with subsequent performances, including euphoric frenzies at Ultra Music Festival and Electric Daisy Carnival that were soundtracked by their banging bass gems, "Rage Valley," "Sleaze," and "Centipede," perhaps even that was an understatement.
In the last two years, Steve Aoki has developed into one of the most successful touring DJs on the planet, evidenced by his feature-packed album ("Wonderland" features the likes of Rivers Cuomo, Wynter Gordon, LMFAO, Kid Cudi and Travis Barker). "Turbulence," with Lil Jon and Laidback Luke, "Tornado" with Tiësto, and "No Beef," with Afrojack, are some of his set staples that have seen him taking the biggest electronic stages around the world — even bringing his boats and cakes to themtvU Woodies. And so, the coming together of the three gents is a dance music culture event worth relishing.
"We did two studio sessions in their Pendulum Studios [Knife Party formed from a band called Pendulum]," Steve recalled. "And their studio is sick. They have so much analog. The setup is incredible. And we did two 12-hour sessions, straight."
"Working with them is like working with gods of producers," Steve chuckled. "I love working with Rob and Gareth, and we really turned out a phat record."
The trio plan to shoot a video for "Pile Driver" next month, and fans can expect the song to drop in early 2013. In the meantime, fans across the country can catch Knife Party on their Haunted House Tour, which kicks off at New York's Pier 94 on October 26 and wraps up in Los Angeles on November 3. Aoki will be performing for New York at dance music mecca Lavo Thursday night (October 18).
