Deadmau5 Rant on Collaborations, Songwritting and the like

Below is a direct rant we took from deadmau5's tumblr.

"So, i’ve had a revelation these past couple of days, and i really feel the need to draw attention to the results here.

Theres a perfectly valid reason why i dont usually enjoy the idea of a “collaboration” … allthough you can rest assure whatever collaborations i have done in the past were the results of stuff im totally into, like Flipside, the Foo’s, Cyprus Hill, etc.

All to often, there’s an influx of “big names” that would get thrown around the label from time to time and of course, they fly off the table and out the fuckin door faster than they hit my desk. eg. do you want to do a track with big name X, remix huge pop act y, etc etc.
no. i fucking don’t. i really REALLY don’t.

im passionate about music, engineering said music, and especially art… at least i certainly feel that i am. And the last thing i want to do… is take the meanings and feelings of a piece of music and have some fucking dipshit blab about lookin sexy, poppin bottles, “droppin bass”, or ANYTHING club related. which fortunately for the world *rolls eyes* makes up for 99% of the “electronic music” fad that’s apparently considered mainstream now.

Obviously, this little rant was mainly inspired by “the veldt”.. which i read a couple weeks ago. Im keen on short stories, since i lack the time to dip into a massive novel. And well, as some of you know, other peoples art, poetry, writting or otherwise can very easily juxtapose to your own craft, inspirring you to create your own personal extension or compliment to the work… hence the track itself.
for those of you familiar with the story, check it out here: http://www.veddma.com/veddma/Veldt.htm
anyway, after being inspired, i felt… man, i’d really like to create a soundtrack to this.. a somewhat melancholic yet uplifting audio image of kids bestowed with insane technology which enables them to conjure up any setting or any thing they desire… which in this case, as children sometimes wish their parents were dead by an unfounded retaliation to being disciplined.

what a great story, i figured.

MORE AFTER THE JUMP

Prok & Fitch - Untitled (name this track & we'll send you a bottle of Sambuca!)

Sleek, Sexy, Dark, Mysterious are all adjectives that come to ones mind when they think of Prok and Fitches new tune called "?".  That's right they don't have a title for this track and are searching feverishly for help ahead of Miami Music Week.

PS how on the money is this track for Miami vibe?

Eric Turner ft. Lupe Fiasco & Tinie Tempah - Angel & Stars (R3hab Remix)

R3hab's "Angel & Stars" remix surfaced on his sound cloud March 17th aka St Pattys Day.  If you were lucky enough to play it at your house party, you know what a great party track it is.  Lupe Fiasco & Tinie Tempah give the track a great dose of cross-genre blending, while R3hab solidifies it as a progressive house track.  Great track to share with your friends that are just starting to experiment with EDM and are tired of Rhinna and calvin harris.

Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano Boston Show Outperforms || EDMBoston Reviews

There’s one week, on every EDM artists calendar, reserved annually.  It is a week that encompasses everything new and current in Electronic Dance Music(EDM), and what the producers/djs are either working on or about to release at the moment.  That week is non other then the prolific Miami Winter Music Conference.

Having the opportunity to see an artist live days, even hours, before they make their Mecca to Miami can be any fans only opportunity, outside of Miami, to sneak a peak at what will go down in Miami and in EDM’s months ahead.

Bostonians had this opportunity, when Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano came to town last Friday.  The fine purveyors of Hollands sexiest export, House Music, have grown to the largest stage of their career, over the last year, and were brought what would be a special night to Boston.

EDMBoston had the opportunity to interview Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano before the show, ride with them to the venue, and do a post show review.  From the time Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano left the hotel to the moment they arrived at the night club, they had nothing on their minds, other then playing music.  “We wanna go right on stage, lets get right at it,” Ryan said when asked if they wanted to go to the green room for drinks before the show.  It was a pointed response, that not only hinted that he didn’t want nerves to build, but he also wanted as much stage time as possible.

On stage Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano opened with a sultry, sexy progressive house beat, that was fresh and original.  After the crowd was loosened with the beat for two short minutes, Sunnery and Ryan wrapped their arms around the energy in the crowd and heightened it with Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep vocals”.  Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano quickly set the president, that its best to check your ego at the door because they were going mind f*ck you with their sweet Dutch nectar.  And when Adele’s vocals gave way, the duo did just that with a massive bass drop.

With the crowd under their CDJ wizardry, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano were able to move the set, where other artist have been unable to in Boston, not to mention a resident DJ getting any where near the spectrum.  The duo was cold and calculated on stage.  Sunnery & Ryan taking if mere seconds to nonverbally communicate.  The two on the same page, were entrenched in song selections and beat matching, but also doing what they love most, dancing.  Ryan Marciano’s hair did its signature bounce and what Sunnery lacked in Ryan’s hair bounce, he made up for it in passionate karaoke outbreaks.  The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Otherside(third party remix) was Sunnerys first such moment of the night.

The sound Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano brought last Friday was far from Big Room, but the song selection evoked the spirituality of what a Big room set is known to do to a crowd.  The mysticism, the spirit of house is what SJ-RM specializes in capturing best.  Their remix of “Lethal Industry” is a powerful example of this. When mixed in live, it proves to be a complex track that takes the crowd on the so called house “journey”.  Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano dropped it mid set.  It’s quiet intro snuck up on the crowd as it appears only to be a type of transitional track. But when you hear the initial “duh duh-duh duh duh” you are paralyzed by it like snake venom.  The simplicity of the melody removes you to a state of peace and before you know it, the track transitions into an all out with energy spiraling out of control.

If you took seconds away from the visual lights and the dirty Dutch duo to close your eyes, the rhythm of the bass/melody would have you transplanted to another world known better for its complex house scene.  Rather when awakened, you’d realize that Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano were able to bring that feeling to Boston for one special night.

Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano Interviews & More Live Footage to come later in the week
