(Papermag.com) British pop star Ellie Goulding is the first one to admit that photo shoots aren't really her thing. "I know for a fact that there are certain angles of my face I don't like," she explains, the fake eyelashes from her first-ever U.S. cover shoot still in place as we settle into a small, no-frills Italian restaurant in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. It's the type of spot where Frank Sinatra plays a little too loudly over the speakers and the 25-year-old's swooping mass of hair -- currently the color of Strawberry Shortcake's bonnet -- seems a bit out of place. "But I'd rather someone see lots of different things that I do with my face than one pose." 

This makes sense given that it's Goulding's commitment to exposing the different sides of herself that's defined her music career thus far. Her electro-pop hit "Lights," released in 2011 off her debut album of the same name, is still holding strong at number three on Billboard's Hot 100 after 36 weeks on the chart. It's the only song of the summer that escaped an embarrassing Internet meme, and as fall takes over, the thumping single can still be heard creeping through the speakers at the coolest cocktail lounges in Williamsburg, as well as in heavy rotation on Kiss FM stations nationwide.

Splash nightclub shutdown!

We knew splash was tiny but 200 person limit for a show?  My dorm room could fit more people then that...ok i lived in a triple...ok i didn't.

(boston.com) Boston’s Splash Ultra Lounge was forced to close and cited for overcrowding and serving alcohol to minors after an inspection sparked by a father’s complaint that his daughter had run up a $2,800 credit card bill there during a bash where underage Boston University students were being served.

Boston police inspected the Kneeland Street club Saturday after receiving the complaint from the father, who told them that his daughter had attended a recent Saturday afternoon event there in which nightclub staff allegedly offered unlimited bottle service to the underage students.
The man said his daughter had racked up the hefty bill at the “Saturday Afternoon Recess Party,” which the club holds on Saturdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., police said.

Arriving this Saturday, officers saw numerous people lined up outside the club waiting for entry and noted that many of them appeared to be under the age of 21, police said.

The doorman told police his count was 247 people in the first-floor area of the club. The roof deck and second floor were closed during the event.

Officers entered the club and saw the first-floor area was crowded and emergency egress aisles were blocked, police said.

Police conducted a head count and tallied 302 patrons and employees in the first-floor area, said Nicole Murati Ferrer, chairwoman of the city’s Licensing Board.

According to the venue’s fire department assembly permit, and its inspectional services department certificate of occupancy, the capacity of the first-floor area is 210 people, Murati Ferrer said.

When entertainment is taking place, as it was at Saturday’s event, the capacity is 200, police said.
Police called District Fire Chief Scott Malone to the scene.

Malone found management to be in violation of fire codes and ordered the venue shut down, Murati Ferrer said.

“Basically, when a place is over capacity and the fire chief deems it is a safety issue, they can shut the place down,” she said.

Fire officials ordered that the premises remain closed until Splash management submits plans to officials on how they will correct overcrowding, police said.

Officers asked a clubgoer who was holding a Heineken bottle for proof of age. The man gave police his Brazilian ID, which showed him to be 19 years old, police said.

Officers asked another clubgoer for proof of age and the male gave police a fake Venezuelan driver’s license, police said. The male later gave his real Florida driver’s license, which showed him to be under the age of 21.

Police ejected both males from the club and filed criminal complaint applications in Boston Municipal Court.

Splash management was cited for serving alcohol to persons under 21, failure to check ID properly, overcrowding in excess of licensed capacity, and blocked emergency egress aisles, police said.

Splash has been cited several times in the recent past for overcrowding, serving to minors or both.
Most recently, it was cited for overcrowding on Aug. 9, police said. In a July hearing, the Licensing Board handed Splash management a three-day suspension for serving alcohol to minors. In a March hearing, the management also received a two-day suspension for overcrowding. And a March 2011 hearing led to a two-day suspension because of overcrowding and alcohol service to minors, Murati Ferrer said.

A woman who answered the phone at the home of Splash owner Frank Depasquale said he did not wish to comment. General manager of the club Amalia Korom could not be reached for comment.

EDM Didn't Come out of Nowhere, Kaskade Rant

Kaskade updated his tubmlr with the following post about EDM's roots and how it didn't just come out of nowhere like many of the mainstream journalist believe.  We applaude his effort to inform the lackluster press that are suppose to be bringing informed journalism to the masses.

Note to Kaskade - would you expect anything more from mainstream press? Bloggers such as EDMBoston work our asses of week in and week out committed to the genre we love.  Along with that comes in-depth knowledge, something that the mainstream media can't fake their way through for the 3 shows they might cover a year.  When we get bumped for these big guys, its non to pleasing, and the results of the mainstream media are usually shit, which make little to no sense to the EDM community while also making those publications look completely out of touch (ie New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today).  However, we realize the mega publications are how you sell the volume, satisfy the record labels, and reach non fans. Tough balancing act but remember the work the little guys are doing for you, as we're the ones the truly care, not the 65 year old picking up the newspaper on the doorstep.

(Kaskade) When talking to the press, I’m often asked how Electronic Dance Music (EDM) sprang up out of nowhere?! These guys. These journalists who make their Santa Claus sparkly eyes, enthusiastic and curious as to how EDM could just pop onto the music scene, *poof* and then dominate festivals, nightclubs, arenas, charts and even be given our own category at the Grammys. Out of nowhere. From nothingness. Just a little push from GaGa, a pinch of cheeky mainstream from the Swedish House Mafia, a hint of Bangerang from Skrillex and voila! A new musical superpower was born.

I’m tempted to bring out my power point presentation kit to show them that EDM has been growing, changing, molding, and molting for well over four decades now. Thassrite! Forty years plus change and some of the founders are grandparents and members of the AARP. Came out of nowhere? New to the scene? Please.

Kraftwerk just celebrated a retrospective at the MoMA in NYC. The show sold out in record time, celebrating their work from 1974 - 2003. Super Grandfather/Godfather of Electronic Everything Brain Eno pushed David Bowie, Talking Heads and Devo to release some of their best work - electronically based - in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Who can forget or would even want to forget “I Feel Love” and its repetitive, electronic infectious baseline that has served as EDM’s Jimi Hendrix moment? That drop in that song has made more people lose their minds on a dance floor than any other song, ever. And if ”I Feel Love” was a mama, she could have kids in college by now.

Even more recently, before EDM had been decided on as our name, “Electronica” was simmering at the turn of the millennium, with Fat Boy Slim, Prodigy, The Dust Brothers (before they changed their name to the Chemical Brothers) and Daft Punk threatening to break into the mainstream. All this while flannel shirts were still being worn as a Grunge statement, and Kurt Cobain’s death was news.

Put simply, EDM is not the new kid on the block. It is not a trend and it is not burning hot and fast. We’ve been lurking and making back alley pushes to help music as a whole for ages. So while our real estate has changed, we’ve been here taking notes and calling shots since before some of our biggest fans were born. EDM can no longer be dismissed because this slow building beast has borne some of the most creatively savvy and long-lasting players in the musical industry.

EDM did not just come out of nowhere. This scene is strong because it has been a super slow burn. There are turf wars and discussions about downfalls. We don’t all play well together, but we all have the right to play. And from where I sit, there is no end in sight for opportunities to grow. EDM cut it’s teeth on the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and turned the millennium with the rest of the musical world. It’s not the Synthpop, Breakbeat, Techno, House, D’n’B, Jungle, Acid or Intelligent Dance Music of the past. It’s the continuing of the legacy that has been decades in the making.

(Rollingstone) Music festivals are more dominant than ever in the concert business, and they're still growing – from Coachella, which brought in a record-breaking $47.3 million gross over two weekends in April, to this weekend's Starry Nights, where fans will be able to enjoy a pancake breakfast and capture-the-flag (along with acts including Cage the Elephant) on a farm in Bowling Green, Kentucky. "All the major ones that have been established for awhile sold out faster than they've ever sold out," says Charles Attal, a partner with C3 Presents, producer of Lollapalooza, which brought 270,000 fans to Chicago in August. "If 10 more festivals popped up in great markets, with great parks and great concepts, I think they'd work."
