Ferry Corsten at Royale: Boston Show Review

Royale Nightclub was alive and ready to go, Monday night, as superstar trance DJ Ferry Corsten stopped in to give Boston fans yet another night to remember, in what has already been an incredible Spring season for Royale; playing host to the likes of Markus Schulz, Krewella, Gramatik, Cazzette, and many more.

Coming off an exciting month of March, in which he performed at three ASOT 600 events (Sofia, Miami, and NYC) and the announcement of his collaboration project, New World Punx, with Markus Schulz, Ferry's energy was running high. In an age when old school trance heads are starting to cry out "trance is dying!" as it rises in popularity in the United States, Ferry turned in a performance that would be sure to silence these detractors. 

Opting away from the complex visuals and overpowering lights that accompany most DJ sets these days, Ferry kept it all about the music, with a simple yet strong LED backdrop, and some well-placed lasers. Those in attendance couldn't seem to get enough, as Ferry kept the show going past our city's puritan-inspired 2 a.m. curfew. Although the show was slightly smaller than many of the shows this spring, perhaps given that it was on a Monday, there was an incredible vibe throughout the night. Ferry played quite a diverse set, weaving in some of his tunes, as well as sampling some particularly surprising artists, including a remix of The Bloody Beetroots. 

With three Above & Beyond shows at Royale next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and Armin van Buuren hitting Ocean Club on Sunday the 26th, this show was just what we needed to get us in the mood for a serious trance binge!

Cazzette at Royale: Show Review

Adding yet another big name act to its already electronic-heavy spring lineup, Royale Nightclub in Boston played host last Thursday to Cazzette, the up-and-coming Swedish house duo. Another prodigy of promoter Ash Pournouri, known for discovering and developing Avicii into the superstar he has become, Cazzette has been making appearances at festivals and venues across the country for over a year now.

Modestep Boston Show Cut Short By Sound Issues & Band Cursing Out Royale

What started off as a another promising night at Royale ended in disappointment for those in attendance, as Modestep walked off stage following a profanity-laced tirade directed at Royale management regarding a disagreement about the sound system.

As the band took the stage for their Boston Show, the crowd was rearing to go, in anticipation for the heavy show Modestep is known to bring (read our Modestep Preview). A dubstep and drum and base band from the United Kingdom, Modestep brings a unique sound to the table, mixing elements of live hard rock and metal with electronic music. Following the release of their debut album, Evolution Theory, they kicked off their first ever American tour with stops at both weekends of Ultra Music Festival, as well as SXSW in Austin, TX. With their single, "Sunlight" being remixed by numerous artists recently (I personally heard it played at the majority of dubstep acts at Ultra), the band has quite a buzz surrounding their tour.

Fans who turned out to Royale Nightclub last night were, however, in for quite a disappointment. The show started off strong, as they hopped quickly between songs, mixing in some of their own tracks such as "Bite the Hand", "Praying for Silence", and "Feel Good", as well as remixes of Skrillex's "Promises", Flux Pavilion's "I Can't Stop", and Knife Party's "Fire Hive". British singer, songwriter and DJ Thomas Slinger, more popularly known as Gemini will be invading Boston tomorrow night for an 18+ show at Royale. Get ready for some downright ferocious drum and bass with some electro house synths and smooth melodies sprinkled around each track.

Considering that he is only 22 years old and just started producing electronic music in 2010, Gemini has definitely come a long way in a short. As of right now his hot track on the scene is his remix of Ellie Goulding’s "Explosions". You may have also heard his track "Blue" and his collaboration with Feed Me called "Whiskers", both of which are exquisitely produced. If you like Electro House, if you like a little Dubstep and if you love Drum and Bass then you will definitely enjoy Gemini. This baby faced Brit is rising fast, don’t miss seeing him tomorrow night at such an intimate venue before he blows up.

Feed Me With Teeth: Royale Show Review

A week after I walked out of Feed Me's Feb. 5 show at the Royale, there's an image still seared in my mind that won't dissolve away.

It's one of those images that functions like a portal to a particular moment in time. If you've ever been affected - spiritually, emotionally, physically - by the all-consuming sensory time warp of a live electronic music show, you probably have at least one of these images stored away.    

What I keep seeing is a massive set of jagged LED teeth, stretched in a devilish grin across the width of the Royale's stage, waiting to come to alive with light. Above the teeth, a pair of slanted, menacing eyes peers over the crowd. A man appears between the eyes, the restless onlookers sense him in the shadows, and roars erupt as the night is set in motion.

Hi Paul, how you doin’?
Hey, I’m fine, thanks.

Have you touched down in Boston yet?
Yes, we arrived about 30, 40 minutes ago. We played in Atlanta and we just came in from London where we did the Identity Festival to start the tour, and Creamfields, because of the weather, of course, was cancelled.

I got to see a couple of your upcoming dates, and it looks pretty hectic, but can you talk about your summer thus far and your touring schedule recently?
Well, the thing is, obviously, you know, especially in the summer, the Ibiza season and the festival season comes all together with a long and crazy touring schedule, so, therefore, it’s a bit hectic but it’s all fun.

So if the summer is focused mostly on touring, how do you find any time to record music?
Well, the good thing is that I -- you know, I don’t know if you’re familiar with the set-up that I use when I’m playing -- but I have pretty much like a mini-studio on stage with computers and uh, a couple of mixes, keyboards, all sorts of stuff, and so when this is not on stage it’s obviously in my hotel room or wherever I am, so I can always make music, which is good, and then of course, as soon as I’m back, you know, I start producing it properly in the studio.

Armin Van Buuren Comes to Boston Unannounced || EDMBoston Exclusive News

Yes you read that right, the "A state of Trance" leader, Armin Van Buuren will be coming to Boston.  Tickets went on sale early this morning at 5am, without any official press release or notice of the Armin Van Buuren Boston Show.  Fans rave about his performances and Armin is a legendary producer to back it up.  The show will happen in Boston Tuesday May 22.  Just wanted to pass this along because a lot of the tickets have already sold out.

Nero gives dubstep pop appeal at Royale || Boston Globe Article

(Globe) In the evolution of any sub-genre, as it lurches, protozoa-like, from the fetid puddles of cool onto the mainstream shore, it must inevitably assume some characteristics of pop. This is when the early adopters curse the cruel hand of musical Darwinism, and promptly abscond. For dubstep - that most emblematic cultural expression of contemporary youth - this moment has passed. As dubstep ambassadors to the pop arena go, you could do a lot worse than UK duo Nero; and a sold-out DJ set by Nero’s Joe Ray at Royale on Thursday illustrated that the transition process was in able hands.

Bouncing around in front of his knobs in whatever sort of conjuring-sleight it is that DJs do, Ray led the crowd through a set that leaned heavily on the duo’s recent apocalypse-themed record “Welcome Reality’’ - although the show may have only seemed like the end of the world to the parents of a clubbing teenager.

I don't even know where to begin with this Globe piece.  Partly due to the fact Royale shut EDMBoston out and then there's credibility issues with the Globe reporting on a Dubstep show.  We're baffled.

The goal of EDMBoston is to build the EDM community in the Bay State and new England.  This means keeping everyone informed and well educated on whats happening in the EDM community.  And we intend to do just that.  Here is some raw footage from the Royale Show of Nero "Promises"

With that said, we’ve decided to look at the bigger picture and take note of what we think are the top 25 clubs in the U.S. From Miami to Los Angeles, New York to Las Vegas, we’ve selected 25 nightclubs that we think are the top hotspots deserving of your attention should you be in their vicinity. If you’re a big clubber like we are, you’re definitely going to want to take some notes.

Members of EDMBoston have been to a lot of clubs, but not all the high roller ones on this list.  Mansion is a really cool club in miami because house culture thrives there.  Every weekend they are constantly bringing in the biggest talent in the industry.  It makes for something special.

In Boston, the closest we get to having talent come in frequently is Royale or Ocean Club.  Neither of which are on the list this year.  Royale has formerly held the spot on the list and surprised it didn't this year.  I think Royale's problem is the venue is so large they have trouble filling it out on a consistent basis.  However the lay out of the club has to be one of the best.
