We at EDM Boston would like to send our love and support to Paul BaĆ¼mer, one half of Bingo Players, as he continues to seek medical treatment following an announcement that he was recently diagnosed with cancer. As they have demonstrated, however, the show must go on! Thus, Maarten Hoogstraten took the stage solo on Sunday night, bringing the pair's production to an eager audience at Boston's House of Blues on Landsdowne.
Whether studying for midterms or fighting off a hangover from Saturday night's raucous celebration of the Red Sox taking home the Pennent, it seemed many people decided to stay home, with an unusually small crowd coming out to the generally packed HOB. This didn't stop Maarten from bringing the roof down, however, as those in attendance can attest.
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the show was the stage production. Maarten stood high above the crowd on an elevated platform with a facade of 20 or so large boom-boxes, with two giant screens made to look like speakers on either side of the facade. The "speakers" were actually LED screens, pulsating and flashing to the beat, with the image changing sporadically to match each track.
Standing on his perch, Maarten sampled a wide array of different artists, he added the duo's banging Dutch House sounds to tracks such as Lana Del Ray's "Summertime Sadness," Fatboy Slim's "Eat Sleep Rave Repeat," Avicii's "Silhouettes," and many more.
