EDM Boston reviews the CNTRL Tour with Richie Hawtin at Rise from Halloween

By: Adam

While there were many acts coming through Boston on Halloween this year, one not to be missed was Richie Hawtin and his CNTRL tour gang in toe.  Of all the shows available for Bostonites to go to, this was one of the most traditional electronic acts playing other than Danny Tenaglia. Held at the after-hours club Rise, the EDM Boston team had a blast at one of the more unique and refreshing shows we've seen in a long time.

Rise is in the DJ Mag Top 100 Clubs for a reason. Their lights and sounds are absolutely incredible. Besides this, Rise is regularly open until the early hours of the morning (6am to be precise), something no other place in Boston does, allowing party-goers to dance until dawn.

The venue is split into two floors, the lower level is a lounge and the upper houses the most underground dance scene in boston.  The upper floor is beyond dimmly lit and can be an intimidating area. Despite this, tucked to the right side of the dj booth is a room lit by tv screens displaying visuals.  We found this area to be the best spot in the upstairs as it had less people, freedom to move, and didn't feel creepy.

The crowd at this show was slightly different than what we expected from a typical crowd found at Rise. For the most part, the audience was full of people 21+ (mostly above 25), who were looking for a night to appreciate the sounds and techniques of these international techno artists. The College Tour that the CNTRL gang was trying to kick off seemed to be attracting less young people than they thought.  However, that didnt stop anyone from having a good time

Ean Golden started the night with a good opener and a minimal sound, followed by Paco Osuna, who had stronger bass drops to get the crowd excited. Loco Dice introduced a more acid house sound, which brought up Richie Hatwin. Each of those DJ’s each carried seamlessly off of the last one so that the music never slowed.

Previously known as Plastikman, the minimal house DJ from the early 2000's, Hawtin's sound is probably unlike any track you have heard being produced lately. As his set progressed, it literally felt like you were floating on waves of music. It might be simple, but it has generous peaks and troughs. Through the course of no more than a few minutes, you encounter new instrumentals coming in and out in a melody which was unlike anything I’ve heard before.

The CNTRL tour coming to town was a treat, and definitely something interesting to break up the electro-house sound that has been over-saturating Boston. While it may not be everyone’s ideal choice in music, these sets live were something to be deeply appreciated for any EDM lover. Top 5 Female Halloween Costumes - EDM Themed

By Lauren:

5) Kandi Raver
While this might have been overdone outside of the holiday already—this one is easy. Simply buy as many plastic pony beads as you can afford and make as many bracelets as possible. These should be elaborate designs or complex, massive three-dimensional pieces with children’s toys attached to them. Most importantly, have friends make you unique pieces that have your kandi raver name on them, this serves as a unique identifier when talking to other ravers. Or, even better, trade with people that you bond with, either over your cigarette break or if you get into a deep conversation about the intricate differences of dubstep versus complextro. Complete the look with a backpack that resembles a stuffed animal.

4) One of the Nervo Sisters
If you feel more of a connection to the DJs than to the people in the EDM scene, your best bet is to pose as one of the girls from Nervo this Halloween. Even if you have dark hair—never fear—just wear a platinum blonde wig (the shaved Mohawk style is typically more identifiable) and the weirdest, most feminine piece of clothing you can find in the men’s section at H&M. Accompany with ripped leather jeans, chunky necklaces, and combat books. Complete the look with badass headphones blasting electro house.

3) Off-the-clock Go Go Dancer
Similar to the Kandi Raver, the Go Go dancer look is easy to achieve depending on how you choose to wear it. Real Go Go dancers often wear close to nothing, so your costume must be up to par. Importantly, you must wear a tutu or ruffled booty shorts. Ditch the chunky dancing boots for comfy sneakers and fluffies. Depending on your level of comfort, on top you can wear a bathing suit top, an embellished bra, or even nothing at all if you’re as daring as some girls. Complete the look with over the top makeup, glitter all over your body and neon fishnets.

2) Sofi and her Ladder
On the more entertaining side of costumes, you can choose to resemble deadmau5 singer SOFI, accompanied by none other than the ladder she so desperately needs. Based off of mau5’s most recent tour dress like Sofi by wearing a black leotard with a hood (don’t ask us where to get one of those), sparkly silver hot pants, leather gloves and heeled combat boots. If possible, find a small ladder that isn’t too cumbersome to carry around at parties and respond: “yes, I got it”, when people ask if you need a ladder. Complete the look with a mau5head drawn in sharpie on your forearm.

1) #1 Avicii Fan
Anything and everything you wear must be neon, cropped, and from Forever 21. Also acceptable: “Missing: Have You Seen Molly?” shirts.. The more obnoxious you are to look at, the better. Spandex shorts are to be accompanied by Converse or neon Nikes. Accessories are vital in this outfit to get the full effect, like a neon pink trucker hat with the words “Rage” “Dubstep” or “Swag” or something of the likes on it. Wear as many glowstick bracelets as you can fit on your arm and sunglasses with no lenses. Complete the look with your $95 DJ Avicii ticket to a seated stadium show and a pacifier to show your friends how “into the scene” you are. Update Facebook with you location every 30 minutes.
