Kill the Noise Takes Cues From Skrillex ~Rollingstone

(RollingStone) "Look at that crowd!" says a beaming Skrillex. "They are so pumped up, it's amazing." He's watching from the side of the stage as thousands of kids jump and scream at HARD Day of the Dead in L.A. last weekend. They're dancing to Kill the Noise, who records for Skrillex's label, OWSLA.

Between touring with Knife Party and his OWSLA labelmates, Kill the Noise (real name Jake Stanczak) is becoming accustomed to the growing live fan base. But he is quick to deflect the credit to his boss. "Sonny [Moore, Skrillex's given name] spent a lot of time helping the scene in a lot of ways, and helping us, so I feel like I owe a bit of that to him," Stanczak tells us in his trailer a few minutes after handing the decks over to Knife Party.

Skrillex influenced his work ethic, he says. "I spent a lot of time expecting something to come, and once I met that guy, it's like, 'Man, if you just work hard enough for long enough, the opportunities kind of align and happen when they're supposed to,'" he says. "It feels like for a lot of people, the time is now."

Making sure the momentum continues, Kill the Noise has just released a new EP, Black Magic, featuring collaborations with Feed Me (one of the artists on Deadmau5's Mouse Trap label) and a new artist by the name of Brillz from whom Stanczak expects big things.

"I guarantee this year people are gonna hear a lot from him," he says.

Another collaborator is a composer named Evan Duffy, who contributed a piano piece. Kill the Noise knows that might surprise some people. "A lot of the stuff I do is really aggressive electro and dubstep and drum-and-bass, [but] it's a little bit of everything on there, tempo-wise," he says of Black Magic.

With the seven-song EP, he intended to push himself out of his comfort zone. "I tried to explore my ability out of my specialty, which is more aggressive stuff," he says. "The past few years I've really been working on the melodic stuff, so that was the point on this one – to try to show that I can do that."

One of the perks of the growing scene is the ability to mix it up, he says. "I just feel like now it isn't necessarily so much about beating people over the head with the big drops and the loudness war," he says. "[With] some true fans, now you can kind of tell a story."

And that storytelling takes him back to his youthful tastes. "I think back to what was the most influential time for me listening to music. I'm 32 now – I grew up listening to Nine Inch Nails and Nirvana, and before that, Metallica," he says. "They would have the really crazy thing they were known for, but they would have a ballad and the weird electronic [stuff] produced by Butch Vig. So that's kind of what I want to do – get back to when I was a kid."

ELLIE GOULDING SKRILLEX BREAK UP

(Spinner) After nine months of dating, The Sun reports that electronic music's darling couple Ellie Goulding and Skrillex (aka Sonny Moore) have called it quits. The couple reportedly broke up due to long-distance issues as Goulding lives and works in London and Moore lives in America.

Although the couple originally connected when Goulding was sought out to record vocals on a few Skrillex songs, their shared tastes in music wasn't enough to create a lasting intercontinental romance. In the past, Ellie said she wanted to make a whole album with her boyfriend, but their schedules made it impossible.

"I think in an ideal world we'd love to make a whole record together ... but it just so happens that we're both ridiculously busy. When it comes to music, it honestly is really professional. Honestly," Ellie told the AP earlier this year.

But now it looks like that's a collaboration that will never happen. A source close to the couple said though it's sad, the two just can't make it work.

"A source said: 'It's really sad, they were really good for each other. They just couldn't make it work. They both have successful careers and live in different countries.'"

Top 5 Halloween Costumes : EDM Themed Men

It's almost Halloween, and to go hand-in-hand with our recent article about costumes, here are some for the guys to make a joke about some of the biggest stereotypes in the scene today.

5. The Bro

Looks like some fresh party is coming up brah! Roll up with your crew decked out in some fresh Sperry's, a neon tank (or better, a white one covered in Dayglow paint), big shades and a trucker hat and you're good to go. Make sure you fist pump that wobbly drop and don't let go of the "Avicii Fan" closest to your hips!

4. The Amateur DJ

For the DJ, a few key pieces are needed. First, a dark tight tee shirt and skinny jeans will work. Next, add a chunky necklace from something besides a gold chain. Add some big sunglasses, spike the hair. Grab a pair of earmuffs to fake as headphones. Be sure to check them in between playing the air piano, and don't forget to throw your arms out to the sides after drops.



3. The Solveig

Grab a polo and a windbreaker and zip them all the way up. Next, find a nice chunky sweatband and wrap that around your sidepart. A matching helmet could work, but the other key accessory is a tennis racket. With a "Hello, My Name Is..." sticker, all the girls are gonna want to spend the night out.



2. The Deadmau5

Honestly, this guide is pretty useful for making this costume work. Once equipped with said mousehead, a few things can really pull this together. First off, being skinny would help. Grab an ironic tee, jeans, and throw on some video-gamed themed tattoos. For bonus points, grab yourself a black & white cat, but please don't bring him out.

All the celebs are being Skrillex, and so can you! 3 things are needed: black rimmed lensless glasses, a gauge, and long hair thrown over your half shaved head. Toss on some Beats and a black tee, and you're ready to wobwob with the finest!

Disney Animates Skrillex

Disney aren't strangers to grabbing hot DJ talent to cameo in their movies off the back of the soundtrack. Back in 2011 they got Daft Punk. Now it seems Skrillex is stepping into Disney-land.

A couple of months ago Mixmag reported that Skrillex would score some of the soundtrack to Disney's upcoming animated feature Wreck It Ralph.

After Total Film magazine watched 30 minutes of the new film, it has emerged that Skrillex is not only providing the music but also lending his vocal talents and likeness to star in a cameo role.

Clark Spencer, the film's producer, spoke about how Skrillex went from EDM superstar to Disney cartoon. "We went to him first and said, 'Hey, we have this party scene in the world of Fix It Felix Jr, and we have a DJ and we think it would make a nice cameo if we put you into it.' And he was ecstatic," he said.

"We built his model, we put on his look, and we sent it to him to have him give us comments. And he said he would never wear non-black tennis shoes. He said 'My tennis shoes will always be black'. So we changed the tennis shoes to black.

"You don't see them in the film, as he's behind the DJ booth, but they were in the model. He has seen the animation, and he's very, very excited about it."

Unfortunately Wreck It Ralph doesn't hit UK screens until February 2013 so until then have a gander at the trailer below.

Electronic Dance Music meets Hollywood

(NewYork Times) Once marginalized as a novel European import, electronic dance music, or E.D.M., has become the dominant trend in American pop these days. Its lively synthetic beats and booming bass lines are inescapable, and its top D.J.’s draw sold-out crowds to outdoor raves like Electric Daisy Carnival and even rock bastions like Lollapaloozaand Coachella, earning them thousands, if not millions, of dollars for a single set.

Now several of its stars are turning their attention to what could become their biggest payday yet: Hollywood.

Skrillex, the dubstep D.J. who won three Grammys in February, and who Forbes magazine estimated earned $15 million last year, has composed an original score for the director Harmony Korine’s film“Spring Breakers,” a vacation romp that stars James Franco as a cornrowed drug dealer, which does not yet have a release date. Skrillex, 24, also recorded material for one scene of the Disney animated film “Wreck-It Ralph,” featuring John C. Reilly as the voice of a repentant video game villain, which is scheduled to be released on Nov. 2.

Similarly, Anthony Gonzalez, the mastermind of the gentler, more orchestral French electronic-pop band M83 and creator of its breakout 2011 album “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming,” is working on the score for “Oblivion.” The film, the director Joseph Kosinski’s sci-fi adventure starring Tom Cruise, is slated for release next year.

Another of electronic dance’s leaders, Kaskade, met with film producers during his summer headlining tour but has yet to finalize a deal. Without denying the potential financial rewards Kaskade (whose real name is Ryan Raddon) said part of his motivation for venturing into film scores is artistic credibility.

“For me it’s about longevity and doing something that’s new, different, challenging,” he said. “I think there still are some people who doubt the musicality about electronic music, like: ‘What is it? What are they doing?’ But after you score a film, nobody can really say anything more about that.”

For a movie industry eager to tap into E.D.M.’s largely young fan base, the incentive seems obvious. Yet John Houlihan, a film supervisor who has worked on more than 60 soundtracks, including those for the three “Austin Powers” movies, “Training Day” and the forthcoming Bruce Willis thriller “Looper,” sees an underlying creative connection.

“I think it’s their day in the sun, and Hollywood is very trendy,” he said. “An E.D.M. artist like Skrillex is pushing frequencies and using new instrumentation that is so intense, his music has the potential to drive a modern action scene more effectively than a traditional Hollywood orchestra.”

Zedd catches New York Times Eye

(NYTimes) The roar of 10,000 dance-music fans echoed backstage at Red Rocks Amphitheater near here one evening this month as Skrillex, the 24-year-old prince of dubstep, gave a brotherly bearhug to his protégé and opening act, Zedd.

Two years ago Zedd, whose real name is Anton Zaslavski, was making beats in obscurity in Germany. Now, riding the dance world’s accelerated career track, he’s recording with Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, and the crowd at Red Rocks obediently followed his every fist-pumping dance command.

“It’s crazy,” said Zedd, who is 22 but could pass for 16 if not for the fuzz along his jaw. “I’ve always been making music. But suddenly I’m on the other side of the world touring with people like Deadmau5 and Skrillex.”

To most people over 30 those names might not mean much. But electronic dance music, or E.D.M., is having its day as the sound of young America. Festivals like Ultra and Electric Daisy Carnival draw crowds of 100,000 or more, and dance beats fill high-rolling nightclubs up and down the Las Vegas Strip. Forbes recently ranked the annual earnings of top D.J.’s, topped by Tiësto with $22 million. Naturally the music industry is taking notice.

‘With Your Friends Festival’ announced by Skrillex & Pretty Lights

Skrillex and Pretty Lights have come together to create a brand new festival (because, you know, we really need more of those). The pair of DJs will join Nas,Santigold and a host of other EDM artists for the “With Your Friends Festival” in Nashville on October 26 and 27.

12th Planet, Dillon Francis, Michal Menert and TOKiMONSTA round out the festival’s lineup, and Nas will be performing with a nine-piece band. According to the press release, the fest will take place on the waterfront of downtown Nashville, and
“several private events will ensue post-festival, both at an undisclosed terrestrial location and on a river boat.” So basically you better be in the know so you can see Skrillex spin on a riverboat.

Tickets for the event will go on sale on Wednesday August 29 at 10 a.m. CST, and will be available in general admission and VIP versions. There is no word yet on how much those suckers will set you back. For more information go here.

Skrillex to feature on Kanye West's new album

(NME) Skrillex has said that he will be featuring on Kanye West's new album.

The dubstep producer, who is currently working on his own debut full-length album, has said that he and the '808s & Heartbreaks' rapper collaborated earlier this year, and, from what he understands, it will be the first track on West's new album.

He told The Daily Beast:

"I did some music with Kanye and from what I know, it's actually going to be the first song on his new album."

The producer didn't specify whether the track would feature on West's forthcoming compilation 'Cruel Summer' or on his upcoming sixth studio album, but it is far more likely to be the latter as 'Cruel Summer' is meant to serve as a showcase for the artists signed to West's record label GOOD Music.

Earlier this week, Kanye West said that he has written a new track titled 'Perfect Bitch' and has revealed that it is inspired by his new girlfriend Kim Kardashian.

The rapper took to Twitter on Tuesday (August 7) to tell the world about the track, writing: "I wrote the song 'Perfect Bitch' about Kim".

The track contains a sample from German composer Carl Orff's 1937 composition 'Carmina Burana', which Nas has previously lifted for his single 'Hate Me Now'.

West debuted the track along with a clutch of others during a DJ set at New York's PH-D Rooftop Lounge on Saturday (August 4). There is no word on whether the track is slated to appear on West's new solo album, which is due later this year.

'Cruel Summer' is due for release on September 4.

I don’t really have a home yet. I live on airplanes, so there’ve been times where I’ve been making beats with headphones, and there’d be an old lady next to me in economy, and she’d tap me on the shoulder.

Didn’t you buy a place in L.A. somewhere? 
I haven’t even set foot in it. I’m at my two-year anniversary of living out of a backpack.

That sounds terrible. Do you actually enjoy living out of a backpack? 
Do I enjoy it? People live in bunkers in Iraq for years, you know? You can put yourself through whatever to attain what you want to attain. We’ve accomplished great things, and that’s kind of what it took.

People love to dismiss electronica as inferior to music that’s produced by real instruments. 
The Ramones played four chords and took their Marshall cabinets and jacked everything up to 10 with bass, treble, mid, gain, volume. That was their sound, and people called them illiterate musicians. Leonard Cohen writes lyrics, but musically it’s not, like, the most challenging in the world. That’s the real art, not how technical something can be. It’s where it comes from and the effect it has on you.

As a teenager still known as Sonny Moore, you were the lead singer of a so-called screamo band called From First to Last. How did your vocal cords survive? 
I had to cancel a couple of tours from losing my voice back then. That was partly just not knowing what I was doing.

You had vocal-cord surgery? 
Yeah, I got my nodules removed.

Your music has been criticized for being too full of testosterone. Do you produce too much of the hormone? 
No. Look at me. If anything, I’m more in touch with my feminine side.

The kind of music you make has been associated with the drug culture of raves. Do you like Ecstasy? 
I don’t do hard drugs. Music can electrify you without any substances. We played a festival in Argentina that was 100 percent dry, and from families to kids, old people, everyone was just expressing themselves. That’s my goal: to make music babies can dance to.

Kanye West flew you to Vegas in a private jet. What’s it like? 
It was big, and it was fancy, and it had really hot stewardesses serving food, and his entourage was basically similar to mine, a bunch of guys on laptops working nonstop all the time, and so was he. He works hard, too, man.

You get something better than a cold sandwich on Air Kanye? 
They brought out a lot of, like, decadent desserts and definitely really fancy-looking stuff, sushi and tempura and filet mignon, if you wanted.

You grew up in a household with very few rules. I’m curious what your parents would do when you threw a temper tantrum. 
I didn’t throw temper tantrums. My dad treated me like a friend. If I was excited about something, he would give me undivided attention or sit and watch me play guitar for an hour. That’s true parenting. I wouldn’t want to throw a temper tantrum and let my buddy down, you know?

At 16, you learned that you were adopted and that your biological mother was a family friend. I gather you took it hard. 
It was nothing that anybody meant to harm me, but it made me rebellious. I wanted to find the first train out of there and find some people to play with so I could travel around and do what I always wanted to do.

You’ve gone from broke to wealthy in just a few years. Have you splurged? 
No, man. On tour I have two pairs of jeans and a couple of H & M shirts that are, like, $5. I don’t spend money at all. I don’t really know what I need extra.

You could start by having all your teeth capped in gold. 
Maybe I’ll do that. Maybe that’s my next move, to spend crazy money to get a built grill, get it blessed by some crazy shaman and import it overnight. I don’t know.

(forbes) Even from the back wall at a recent Skrillex concert in Austin, Tex., the DJ’s sound clatters and bangs on the brain, an all-out aural assault. Every thump of the bass feels like a punch to the throat, from the inside. Yet the thousands of revelers writhing in unison enjoy the experience with a dreamy fervor generally reserved for religious awakenings, undulating every time Skrillex twists a knob on his elaborate soundboard, with nary a person leaving until the show wraps up a little after 2 a.m.

Electronic dance music, or EDM, is an ascendant genre that is in equal measure a creed, with Skrillex emerging as the high priest. He’s credited with popularizing dubstep, a particularly thumpy variation, and snagged three Grammys for his efforts this year. Over the past 12 months the 24-year-old pulled in an estimated $15 million, the second most of any DJ over that period. And it’s not just pill-popping teenagers fueling his popularity.

“I had a buddy that had a buddy that came out [to my concert] with this lawyer guy,” says Skrillex after the show. “This guy is a lawyer that makes a lot of money, that never does anything like this. … Ten minutes later I see him with his shirt off and his tie off and his shirt around his head.”
