Culprate - Hall Of Mirrors

Culprate - Nightmares In Reality EP

By Mike B of Butlertron

Culprate's new Nightmares in Reality EP leads off with "Hall of Mirrors", a delightfully heavy dubstep jaunt. Vocals drenched in effects give a trippy feel to the comfortable arps and pads of the intro. The lyrics set the mood but never return, leaving the broken beat and bass to shine. I can't get enough of that twisted, syncopated 808 bass.

Don't miss the intriquing sample work on the other highlight of the EP, a moody, heavenly, garagey track titled "Two".

Deadmau5 Headphones Sol Republic

Sol Republic has followed up their Meowingtons spoof cat headphone video with the real deal. They've announced the deadmau5 Tracks HD headphones, produced in close cooperation with the multiple award-winning electronic music artist, and digital artist Joshua Davis.
Kevin Lee, SOL REPUBLIC CEO, said:

“We didn’t want to make yet another artist headphone for namesake. However, some music artists are truly creative beyond music and have an interesting artistic view. Joel Zimmerman is one of them. What he created in the end with Joshua Davis is very cool interpretation of the world of Deadmau5, part controlled part not, which in itself says something.
We’re excited that Joel liked our Tracks headphone, the sound of it, look of it, and wanted to use it as a creative canvas. Like most art, it wasn’t designed for everyone. But for the deadmau5 fan and certainly for Joel Zimmerman, it’s a strong expression of sound and personal style, which is why we love it.”
Unique Design
Part illustration, part computer “controlled randomization” Joel Zimmerman aka deadmau5 and Joshua Davis, a frequent collaborator of deadmau5, worked together to create a digital interpretation of the world around deadmau5 that Joshua best describes as a “beautiful accident”.
Signature Sound
Not only can the Tracks HDs handle all the dynamics and powerful bass of deadmau5 music, the design is a fun, energetic visual view point of Joel’s music and his iconic “mau5head”.
Like all SOL REPUBLIC Tracks HD headphones the deadmau5 model features v10 Sound Engines, for deeper bass, higher clarity and crisp vocals. Also, the Sound Engines, the virtually indestructible FlexTech™ headband and the detachable cable with three-button remote and mic are completely interchangeable with all other SOL REPUBLIC Tracks products.
The SOL REPUBLIC deadmau5 headphones are available now at major retailers worldwide including The Apple Store, Future Shop and Best Buy and online at SOLREPUBLIC.com for $149.99 MSRP.

MMMMaven's Boston DJ School Open House Inspires

The EDM community is bustling in Boston and it's creating a lot of new outlets to enjoy its fruits.  One of them is the new MMMMaven project.  Creators of the Together Festival, David Day and Alex Maniatis, have come together (no pun intended) to create a premier Boston DJ School, in the heart of Cambridge's Central Square.  The schools goal is to educate those interested in DJing in the classic art of using two turntables and a mixer to produce the funkiest bad ass sets only a skilled DJ can put together.  Until now Boston hasn't had a formal school like this and one would have to go to NYC to get something close to this experience.  The creators of MMMMaven believe this will help boost the quality and quantity of DJs in Boston.

Fortunately for EDMBoston, we had the opportunity this passed saturday to check out the MMMMaven project's BOSTON DJ SCHOOL up close and personal at its OPEN HOUSE event.

Much like a relaxed cafe brewing your favorite java and offering a cozy environment, MMMMaven's classroom offers the same comforts, only geared towards music lovers.  Crisp paint, sparkling new equipment, and a fresh leather couch fill the new music school space.  The edgy modern space has a feel far from the dirty trenches DJs call home, at the areas local nightclubs and bars.  As a result, the newest and most timid to get involved in DJ culture will feel comfortable at MMMMaven.  That's because not only is the space conducive to learning but you also get two veteran owners and a DJ instructor helping guide you through the DJ 101.  Alex and Dave bring more then passion to the classroom.  They have 30 years combined experience in the record business, not to mention they are very laid back and accepting.  Not to be overlooked your professor of mixology is a working local DJ.

EDMBoston is extremely excited to have the MMMMaven project in Cambridge because it gives the EDM community a quasi home outside of nightclubs.  In addition, you can feel the inspiration that will be lent to knew minds, as they travel on a new hobby path towards a new passion.  Be sure to keep your eye on this cambridge venture as MMMMaven will be exploring new seminars, q&a sessions with visiting djs, and many other events in the near future. check out MMMMaven here

DIPLO'S VIBE Magazine COVER STORY: THE MIDDLE MAN

Vibe Magazine gets up close and personal with Diplo Vibe Magazine Cover Story. Diplo spills the beans on DJing and why he thinks it isn't so cool and what he's been up to in his busy life.

(Vibe.com) DIPLO SITS IN a studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, tinkering a beat he’s worked on for months. He takes it from 134 beats per minute down to 128. It still doesn’t sound right. “My ears are so fucked to this. Let’s see what it sounds like at 130,” he says to a young producer from Europe assisting him today. The Dutch rapper who introduced them loafs on a couch nearby. “Polska, whatever his name is,” Diplo later tells me, “is like the A$AP Rocky of Holland.”

The track initially resembled a “house record” but turned into a “trap record” after Diplo slowed it down and added some bass. Complicating matters is that the song features Pharrell. “I’m trying to negotiate what Pharrell wants for the record,” he says. “Pharrell loved the demo, but the demo is so monotone for me. It’s just a mixtape cut [now,] but it can be bigger than that because the hook is so good.”

Diplo wears a maroon T-shirt, mustard-colored skinny jeans and sleek gray high-top Puma sneakers, looking every bit like the cool-kid DJ he’s been for nearly a decade. But since producing singles for Usher, Chris Brown, Wale, and Beyoncé, he’s evolved into a new role—rap and R&B’s latest hitmaker for hire. It’s a welcome transition for Diplo. Spinning records has brought him the residency in Vegas, the BlackBerry sponsorship and the big-money corporate gigs—“Sometimes I make more money in a weekend than my grandpa made in a year”—but he doesn’t think DJing is a special talent or challenging or… “Being a DJ is pretty bullshit,” he says. “I’m lucky I can...
