Girl Talk Boston Show Heats up Water Front

Chopped, diced, and sampled is the way the music plays out and that’s just the way Greg Ellis aka ‘Girl Talk’ wants it to be. As he works through his concert, he plays his repertoire of mashups, which consist of sound samples from some of the most infamous song from 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s mixed together to create a new song.

Boston was fortunate to have Girl Talk on one of the last weekends of the summer, along the water at the Bank of America Pavilion. It was a beautiful evening under the tent in the mid 70s. The crowd was a mix of people. Some were donning the new en-vogue neon colors, while others stuck to a more tradition casual night out garb. The homogenous mainstream crowd mixed well and was friendly and outgoing. However, everyone was at the Pavilion for one reason, to dance their faces off to Girl Talk.

EDMBoston was most interested in how Girl Talk's Boston show would work EDM, or Electronic Dance Music, into his set. Given EDM's new mainstream viability/crossover we believed this would be the perfect show to see how receptive a mainstream crowd was to the music.

Girl Talk ran onto the stage, literally, on or about 9:00 and came out to a loud roar as a song sample chanted "Girl Talk". Greg immediately took to the mic, standing on top the DJ table shouting, "BOSTON....Where we at Boston? How we Feeling Boston People? Front row back row you ready to celebrate Boston?!?". All the while, a balloon drop came down on the crowd. Girl Talk's energy was infectious from the start and it reverberated throughout the crowd.

Following Greg's loud greeting was his first sample of the familiar, "Play Your Part(Part 1)". Seconds into the track a group of fans joined him on stage. The special group of roughly 50 fans were hand selected from the crowd before the show. The only requirement from the stage was that dancers be full of energy and dance their butts off. It was unique to see an artist take the risk and have so many fans on stage with him. Nevertheless, it never seemed to pose a problem and added lots of entertainment value. The amateur dancers kept the crowd guessing as to what they'd see next from them but not more so than the music Girl Talk would play.

The music Greg played throughout the show changed at variable rates as different sound samples played out. For the most part Greg was able to maintain a flowing tempo. Although there were times during the set that his tempo made abrupt jagged changes, the crowd was never lost one bit. Throughout the entire show, Greg danced and bounced behind his laptop, only stopping to shed the many layers of clothes he was wearing.

Girl Talk’s performance was notable because of Greg’s impressive command of the crowd. For a dance party, this is an important tool because losing the crowd is the dagger in any party. When Greg would feel the crowd drift from his he attention would get on the microphone and pump them back up like only a seasoned professional could. It was impressive and given the amount of shows EDMBoston has been to, and that skill shouldn't be taken lightly.

As for EDM, we can say Girl Talk didn't work very much of it into his set. Calvin Harris' "Feels So Close" mashed up with Eminem's "Forget about Dre (vocals)" was the only track we caught that was played at length. Still, the performance was random, ridiculous, and why GirlTalk is who he is: a creative musician at the upper echelon of the mash-up game.

PORTER ROBINSON SAYS ‘NO’ TO KATY PERRY

(Dailystar) DJ Porter Robinson turned down Katy Perry so he could stay true to his club roots.

The American is about to blow up after his latest tune Language cracked the midweek Top 10.

But he refuses to follow in the footsteps of other celebrity DJs and turn to pop. Porter, 19, told me: “I’ve had offers from a bunch of triple-A pop acts like Katy Perry to work with them, but I’m not interested.

“It’s a surefire way of damaging your credibility and I just don’t think it’s inspiring. I want to make stuff that I enjoy so I won’t produce anyone else, for now.”

Porter’s inspiration is Deadmau5, a man who never follows the dance pack.

The North Carolina lad added: “I admire him because he’s yet to release a song that sounds like he’s trying to fit into something.”

Language is about to make Porter a household name outside of clubbing circles.

He said: “It’s totally unexpected because I come from a style of aggressive club music, less musical and less commercially viable.

“I just wanted to do something different.

“I’d been listening to film scores and more emotional-sounding stuff. I wanted to capture...

Ni**as In Paris (Cazzette Ash That Shit Cray Mix) - Cazzette

In early 2012 you couldn't listen to any radio station that didn't have on Kanye West and Jay’Z’s “Ni**as In Paris”.  It was absolutely inexcapable.  Even EDM artists were working it into their sets.  Well now the hip-hop anthem is getting the remix treatment from Swedish duo Cazzette. One of Ash Pournouri's, founder of At Night Management and manager of Avicii, prized talents, Cazzette are seeing their stardom rise as their At Night counterpart, Avicii, rises.  However, this duo doesn't have to rely on Avicii because they are producing high quality originals and remixes.  Their innovative merging of dubstep & house, which some call “dub house”, and extremely dance floor-friendly remixes bring smiles wide and far.

With Cazzette’s “Ni**as In Paris (Cazzette Ash That Sh*t Cray Mix),” the Cazzette display how hip-hop and dubstep can accurately be merged. Fancy a listen here:

Although Cazzette brings the noise with their remixes, Cazzette’s first proper single is expected to come by the end of the summer.  In the fall, they are doing a 17-date tour of the U.S. and parts of Europe.

Ingrosso and Alesso’s back-to-back Essential Mix

Pete Tong took his Essential Mix onto the road as part of Radio 1 Ibiza weekend. For the night he called the massive room of Privilege home. As part of the feature he broadcasted a live set which included a back-to-back session from Swedish House Mafia member Sebastian Ingrosso and his young protégé Alesso. The broadcast is a must if you’re a fan of massive big-room house.

In Ingrosso and Alesso's back-to-back, the Swedes mixed together a healthy dose of familiar remixes, mash-ups, and productions from producers like Deniz Koyu, Tommy Trash and Nari & Milani.

Dennis Ferrer on Commercial EDM: "They See an Easy Customer Who Wants It Fast & Cheap"

(Miami New Times) From Deadmau5 pissing off pretty much everyone with his hateful and decidedly hypocritical rants, to a cluelessParis Hilton jumping on the DJ bandwagon and crowning herself the new queen of house with disastrous results ...

Hard-working DJs across the underground scene are starting to feel like their precious subculture is getting crapped on by sell-outs and attention whores.

Of course, DJ-producer Dennis Ferrer has plenty to say about it, as you'll find out in this candid interview ahead of his gig at Space Miami on Saturday.

Crossfade: What's been going on with you this year? Any personal highlights so far?
Dennis Ferrer: I've been on a hectic touring schedule. At the same time, [I've been] re-educating myself musically and production-wise. Highlight of the year so far was playing at Ushuaia for Luciano's party and playing some of the Sensation parties I've been honored to play at.

What can we expect from you in the studio next? Any forthcoming projects or releases?
I've been hard at work, experimenting with...
