Budweiser: Made in Boston - A Review

By Mike Hurowitz

Hundreds of young Bostonians flocked to the House of Blues on Thursday for the Boston stop on Budweiser's second annual Made in America Tour. Enticed by free beer and music, partygoers had to simply rsvp online for free admission.

Upon entering HOB, we were surrounded by Budweiser signs, slogans, and decorations, but most importantly, loads and loads of free beer! The venue's interior had also received something of a makeover, with a giant screen above the upper mezzanine playing a live feed of the crowd, as well as doubling the amount of visuals being played during the show.

From our perch on the third floor, the crowd looked like a sea of color, with almost everyone in attendance waving manically flashing, color-changing Budweiser glow sticks that had been distributed throughout the crowd. Throughout the show, Budweiser representatives were walking around taking pictures of the attendees, making us a feel, at least for a moment, like something of a celebrity. If that didn't work they had a full on Photo Booth stage, which elevated you 3 feet above the crowd and set the main stage as the photo backdrop.

Opening the event was mashup artist Greg Luskin, aka Milkman, who got the crowd jumping to a set of today's pop hits, stitched together in a tremendously creative manner. Following his set, the electro-pop duo, Time Flies, took the stage, with producer Rob Resnick behind the decks, and vocalist Cal Shapiro breaking hearts with his boy band-esque swagger.

While it may be expected that a free event with free beer could turn ugly (especially in Boston!), almost everyone in attendance acted responsibly, and the event went off without a hitch. Everyone appeared to have a great time.

Kill the Noise Hits Ocean Club, Show Preview

By Mike H

For anyone with knowledge of the Boston electronic music scene, it is no secret that the hottest venue of the summer has, without a shred of doubt, been Quincy's Ocean Club at Marina Bay. Having played host to some of the industry's top DJs, from Armin van Buuren, to Pretty Lights, and many in between, OC has no plans of slowing down any time soon.

Up next in the parade of EDM all-stars to grace the decks at Ocean Club is American drum and bass icon, Jake Stanczak, aka Kill the Noise. It's been a busy year for KTN, having made stops at some of America's major festivals, including EDC Las Vegas and Ultra Music festival, and Electric Forest. Unlike many artists, whose acclaim is reached through the release of numerous singles and promotions, KTN has garnered much of his notoriety through internet buzz based on his numerous remixes and bootlegs of major dance tracks, many of which are available on his soundcloud. Also available on his soundcloud are his collaborations with superstars such as 12th Planet and Skrillex ("Right On Time"), as well as fan favorite, Dillon Francis ("Dill the Noise").

While many of Ocean Club's headliners have been members of the EDM mainstream, mostly major house and dubstep artists, Kill the Noise is the first major drum and base artist to bring his talents to the South Shore. Although the average Ocean Clubber may not be terribly well-versed in the art of raging to drum and base, we're sure that this will be one hell of a show, and we can't wait to see all of your beautiful faces in attendance tonight!!
Stay tuned to the EDMBoston calendar of events for all of Boston's upcoming events!

Disclosure Secret Boston Show Announced

MTV Iggy and Intel have announced that Electronic dance duo Disclosure will headline The Music Experiment 2.0 in our very own hometown of Boston! The event will take place at a secret location on August 7th.

This show won't be your ordinary rave.   The theme of the show is “White Noise”, which plays off the title of Disclosure’s hot single, creating an immersive visual experience that fits into the duo’s album aesthetic. The entire venue will be blacked out and fans will be encouraged to arrive dressed in all black with the chance to paint their faces with white glowing paint, just like in the iconic Disclosure album and video motifs.

This is all part of The Music Experiment 2.0 experience which is created to be like entering a music video, with elaborate themes and costumes.  The artists and fans co-create a music experience together.

This show, like the rest in the series, will be broadcast live across the globe at the ME 2.0 website or via the Music Experiment Windows 8 App and will also air at a later date on the Palladia music channel. Fans from around the globe can join the live show remotely as part of the Virtual Audience via their webcam and will be projected onto a giant screen at the venue.

The Music Experiment 2.0 is a themed, social-media powered music series that connects passionate fans with their favorite emerging artists. Tickets are awarded to fans that visit the online hub (http://www.musicexperiment.com) and engage the most with the series on Facebook, Instagram, Vine, and Twitter. Social submissions deemed the most creative will be awarded prizes including VIP tickets to the show, a personal meet and greet with the artists and a starring role in their own MTV Iggy-produced music video.

English electronic music duo Disclosure, made up of brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence, headline The Music Experiment 2.0 as part of their fall tour in the United States to promote their just-released debut album on Cherrytree/Interscope, Settle (iTunes / Amazon).

The Windows app will allow homes users to direct the show themselves from multiple camera angles – zoom in for a close up on their favorite band member, cut back for a wide shot, and save their own edit to share with their friends. The entire experience is in full HD video and can be wirelessly sent to the users TV using Intel's new WiDi technology while being controlled from their lap.

Boston is the second leg of The Music Experiment, which launched in New York last month with Empire of the Sun headlining (stream show here). The concert series continues throughout the year with stops in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Nashville.

Erick Morillo Cuts Boston Gig Short at Ocean Club

erick morillo ocean club
The summer has gotten off to a dramatic start in Boston with its intermittent weekend weather and high profile DJ frequenting the area. There have been lots of highs and lows but, no one foresaw what was going to take place on Saturday June 8th at Quincy’s Ocean Club. Erick Morillo was booked for the evening and the fan favorite DJ was anxiously awaited for by the masses. People on twitter had even tweeted that they had driven two hours to see him perform in Massachusetts. Nevertheless, what the crowd received that evening was far from what was promoted or expected.

Things got off to a bad start. Erick took to the decks at Ocean Club in a physically disoriented state that had everyone immediately talking.  Nevertheless, all talk was brushed aside to hear the sweet Latin house vibes. However, approximately 45 minutes into the set things went south, rapidly. Morillo abruptly staggered away from the decks disoriented seeking help.  The music was stuck in a loop,  and morillo was no where in site. The crowd was left hanging only to be rescued by reliable hometown favorite Bamboora to carry on the night.

What the crowd couldn't see was Erick Morillo, being heavily assisted/carried off the stage by security to his livery.  Morillo manager followed hotly in pursuit behind the artist.

With average ticket prices/cover charges at Ocean Club ranging from $25-40, fans were rightfully disappointed to see Erick Morillo Boston Gig fail to produce a full set.

While there is no confirmation, there is strong speculation that Erick’s departure from the stage was due to the heavy influence of drugs.

His erratic behavior was not only isolated to OC Sunday saturday edition.  Just 3 nights prior to his Boston area gig, Erick Morillo was scheduled to spin at Emporium Long Island. However, the artist failed to show up for the gig.

At this time we have no word on Erick’s official condition but we wish him the best.

Markus Schulz Boston: Screaming Review

Markus Schulz Boston

By Mike Hurowitz

Anyone who was lucky enough to be in Boston at Royale Nightclub on April 10th could tell you that it was an incredibly special night. With serious star power in The M Machine as the opening act, and superstar German trance producer Markus Schulz set to play for a full two hours, little else could have been expected.

Schulz got the Boston crowd going immediately, taking the stage as soon as The M Machine had walked off. Starting off with an energetic track, he surprised fans with a quick blast of the confetti cannons two minutes into the show. What struck me as perhaps the most remarkable part of the show was Schulz's ability to maintain a sense of momentum throughout the set. Although the entire set was incredibly high energy, he brought it in waves, building a track up until the crowd seemed ready to burst, and finally breaking it down.

The Markus Schulz Boston set truly was something special. Perhaps riding his momentum from incredible performances at the various ASOT 600 events, in particular his New York collaboration with Ferry Corsten, in a project called New World Punx, made it a night to remember. While he remixed many popular tracks by other artists, such as "Out of my Mind" by Bingo Players, or "Dream Within a Dream", by Hanz Zimmer, perhaps most memorable was his nod to trance god, Armin van Buuren, with "D# Fat" featuring W&W.

Markus Schulz, the first in a string of trance artists who are slated to hit Boston over the next month, was a great way to kick it all off. We can only imagine what is in store for us with Ferry Corsten, Above & Beyond, Armin van Buuren and more set to perform at venues across Boston.

5 Things Dillon Francis' Boston Wurld Turr Taught Us

dillon francis wurld turr boston

He's built a shroud of cats, comedy, star wars, and obscure Billy Madison spoof movie scenes. Setting the distractions aside, there's also the promising music produced by this young prodigal producer. His unique sound and curation of a young sub-genre, moombahton, which he help direct at its beginning stages, caught the attention of Mad Decent label Boss, Diplo.

The young man we are talking about is none other than the vivacious Dillon Francis. Sir Dillon Francis, as he is often called, is currently touring the United States on his craftily named, Wurld Turr. (Erhmahgaddd)

Boston played host to the praised and strongly demanded artist on March 27 in the areas largest venue, the House of Blues Boston. Dillon Francis Suit and Tie Remix and star power had no troubles selling out the venues general admission floor and spattering bodies about the mid and upper decks.

The profile of the crowd wasn't much different from Dillon himself. It sported a concentrated group of eight-tweens and didn't hover much higher. Students fresh out of classes were at the House of Blues to sport their newest neon and plurific outfits. On scale of one to ten, the energy in the building hovered at six and peaked at seven and a half when Dillon mc'd.

That night Dillon's enamored fans would go on to learn 5 things about Dillon Francis Wurld Turr Boston Taught Us:

Modestep Boston Show Cut Short By Sound Issues & Band Cursing Out Royale

modestep boston show royale
What started off as a another promising night at Royale ended in disappointment for those in attendance, as Modestep walked off stage following a profanity-laced tirade directed at Royale management regarding a disagreement about the sound system.

As the band took the stage for their Boston Show, the crowd was rearing to go, in anticipation for the heavy show Modestep is known to bring (read our Modestep Preview). A dubstep and drum and base band from the United Kingdom, Modestep brings a unique sound to the table, mixing elements of live hard rock and metal with electronic music. Following the release of their debut album, Evolution Theory, they kicked off their first ever American tour with stops at both weekends of Ultra Music Festival, as well as SXSW in Austin, TX. With their single, "Sunlight" being remixed by numerous artists recently (I personally heard it played at the majority of dubstep acts at Ultra), the band has quite a buzz surrounding their tour.

Fans who turned out to Royale Nightclub last night were, however, in for quite a disappointment. The show started off strong, as they hopped quickly between songs, mixing in some of their own tracks such as "Bite the Hand", "Praying for Silence", and "Feel Good", as well as remixes of Skrillex's "Promises", Flux Pavilion's "I Can't Stop", and Knife Party's "Fire Hive". The crowd, although relatively small, was as energetic as I have seen at Royale, and the show was just starting to get rowdy when, ...

Modestep Boston Show Preview

modestep boston

by Kat S.

Before heading to the Royale on Sunday for the Modestep show, make sure you check out their debut album “Evolution Theory.”

The live electronic rock band from London will be rocking the Royale this Easter Sunday with a ton of British intensity.

Unlike some EDM artists today, the guys of Modestep don’t rely heavily on samples. Because they are a four member band, they are able to explore a range of beats and vocals that are all created by them. The band has a wide array of variety in their music, and definitely have what it takes to make it big following the release of their album and a U.S. tour.

And make sure you buy your tickets here to support Boston's local EDM scene!

The British Are Coming! Gemini Show Preview

By Justin M:

Gemini @Royale Boston Tomorrow night 7:00: Show Preview

gemini British singer, songwriter and DJ Thomas Slinger, more popularly known as Gemini will be invading Boston tomorrow night for an 18+ show at Royale. Get ready for some downright ferocious drum and bass with some electro house synths and smooth melodies sprinkled around each track.

Considering that he is only 22 years old and just started producing electronic music in 2010, Gemini has definitely come a long way in a short. As of right now his hot track on the scene is his remix of Ellie Goulding’s "Explosions". You may have also heard his track "Blue" and his collaboration with Feed Me called "Whiskers", both of which are exquisitely produced. If you like Electro House, if you like a little Dubstep and if you love Drum and Bass then you will definitely enjoy Gemini. This baby faced Brit is rising fast, don’t miss seeing him tomorrow night at such an intimate venue before he blows up.

Harlem Shake Consumes Boston

harlem shake boston

Boston has been getting into the latest internet fad, the Harlem Shake, with businesses, bands and schools all going crazy once the bass of Baueer's Harlem Shake drops. The internet creates a crazy world of fad videos and pictures. From planking to LOLcats, viral internet memes can take the world by storm within a few days, and the Harlem Shake is no exception.

Baueer even got in on the action, at the Middle East in Cambridge, last week during his Valentine's Day show with Just Blaze.  At the show you, he put on full display his Harlem Shake Boston edition!

Local Boston business HubSpot put their own, milky, twist on the viral video.  They created a quirky Office Space Harlem Shake in their Boston office that would make the most lenient boss question perplexed. Working in an office with their own Harlem Shake and their own giant T-Rex...YES PLEASE!

Feed Me With Teeth: Royale Show Review

feed me boston review

By Liam (@LiamOKennedy on Twitter):

A week after I walked out of Feed Me's Feb. 5 show at the Royale, there's an image still seared in my mind that won't dissolve away.

It's one of those images that functions like a portal to a particular moment in time. If you've ever been affected - spiritually, emotionally, physically - by the all-consuming sensory time warp of a live electronic music show, you probably have at least one of these images stored away.

What I keep seeing is a massive set of jagged LED teeth, stretched in a devilish grin across the width of the Royale's stage, waiting to come to alive with light. Above the teeth, a pair of slanted, menacing eyes peers over the crowd. A man appears between the eyes, the restless onlookers sense him in the shadows, and roars erupt as the night is set in motion.

The eyes glow silver in the dark as Jonathan Gooch a/k/a Feed Me builds a... READ MORE AFTER BREAK

Boston's 2nd EDM Radio Station Nova Launches?

EDM Radio Station Nova

***UPDATE***
Greater Media was in a stunt phase in between transitioning there talk radio FM station to a Pop radio station.  96.9FM lasted only a day as an EDM station...sad face emoticon

As we flipped around the dial on the FM airwaves tonight we were greeted with familiar electronic sounds, on a station other then the newly launched First Boston EDM FM radio station on 101.7FM.  The channel was 96.9 FM. Until January 2nd 2013, the station had been reserved as a talk FM station for the Jim and Margery show.  However the lights went dark on the station, on the aforementioned date, and transitioned to a music station.  The station played hip-hop and top 40 but didn't last for long in that format.  In fact the station has switched formats to a new EDM station Nova.  The channel is owned by Greater Media Boston.

It's unclear if this will be a primary EDM station or will remain as the mainstay format on 96.9.  As of right now its a healthy blend of pop and EDM. What's interesting is Greater Media has hired Pebbles formerly of JAMN' 94.5 to run the new stations morning show.

That being said, in our time tuned into 96.9 EDM Station Nova we heard Armin, Deadmau5, Calvin Harris, David Guetta, and Will.I.AM to name a few.  We will keep you posted as we know more information on Nova.
