Is Dubstep Avant Garde Musical Genius? PBS Weighs in (Yes that PBS)

(flavorwire) Teenagers, brace yourselves: PBS has made a video about dubstep, which means it’s only a matter of time before your parents start asking questions about those electric can opener noises invading the house via your bedroom. In a new Idea Channel clip, host Mike Rugnetta asks whether the genre — which, despite breaking through to the American mainstream, isn’t exactly a critical favorite — can actually be defended as avant-garde musical genius, comparing it to such 20th-century forerunners to electronic music as musique concrète and George Antheil’s Ballet Mécanique. Rugnetta also mentions that pre-World War I Italian Futurist artists would have loved dubstep, as they shared its central aesthetic values: “technology, violence, and speed.” (He reminds us that they were also anti-feminist fascists, so do with that information what you will.) Watch the video below and tell us whether PBS has convinced you to see the genre in a new light, or if you’ll still be tuning out Skrillex for the foreseeable future.

DJs Are The New Rock Stars

In case you were wondering what the state of EDM was according to a mainstream media company or how the people with money are looking at EDM, Forbes does a great job in the piece below.  As we've reported before DJs are the new Rock Stars

(forbes) Even from the back wall at a recent Skrillex concert in Austin, Tex., the DJ’s sound clatters and bangs on the brain, an all-out aural assault. Every thump of the bass feels like a punch to the throat, from the inside. Yet the thousands of revelers writhing in unison enjoy the experience with a dreamy fervor generally reserved for religious awakenings, undulating every time Skrillex twists a knob on his elaborate soundboard, with nary a person leaving until the show wraps up a little after 2 a.m.

Electronic dance music, or EDM, is an ascendant genre that is in equal measure a creed, with Skrillex emerging as the high priest. He’s credited with popularizing dubstep, a particularly thumpy variation, and snagged three Grammys for his efforts this year. Over the past 12 months the 24-year-old pulled in an estimated $15 million, the second most of any DJ over that period. And it’s not just pill-popping teenagers fueling his popularity.

“I had a buddy that had a buddy that came out [to my concert] with this lawyer guy,” says Skrillex after the show. “This guy is a lawyer that makes a lot of money, that never does anything like this. … Ten minutes later I see him with his shirt off and his tie off and his shirt around his head.”

That lawyer has a lot of company. Over the last year Skrillex has performed in front...

Techno Dave Evicted from Home

How load do you have to play the music to royally piss off your neighbors...1 hour? 2 hours? 1 day? 2 days???

Depending on were you live will offer you significant leeway.  However, for Techno Dave, he pushed peoples limits too far and found himself evicted.  Read the article below from Stoney Roads about Techno Dave Evicted from home

(Stoney Roads) Thought you played your music loud at home? Try living next door to ‘Techno Dave’…

It was reported on Tone Deaf via The Daily Mail that 45 year old David Lea played techno music at ear bleeding loud levels, had hundreds of visitors call in at all hours of the day, and often let his dog run wild around the apartment complex.

The longest stint for one of his impromptu raves lasted two days while on another occasion Mr Techno was heard racially abusing a female neighbour.

An emergency injunction from the council after numerous warnings saw David Lea evicted but within days returned breaking his injunction and thus ended in his arrest.

His next-door neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: ‘Since he has gone, my life has changed and I am now very happy.’

Another neighbour added: ‘It was so loud all the time. We could all hear it. We’re glad it’s finished now.’

Any horror stories of neighbours playing music too loud or getting in trouble for playing music too loud?

Running The TRAP: What is Trap Music?

 By: Kyle

Recently there has been a surge in EDM culture and a new sub-genre has emerged onto the scene.  It's name: Trap.  As with recent trends in the electronic dance music world, many will jump to the conclusion to say that “trap” music is the new “moombahton” or “dubstep,” but that is not necessarily the case.  So you ask "What is trap Music"? Trap music was born in the south and has been a part of the Hip-Hop scene for a while.  Most notably, producer DJ Screw, who was known for inventing the “chopped and screwed” style which became popular among rap musicians paved the way for artists like T.I. , Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame to break into the rap game. I must admit there was a time where I went through a period of listening to Gucci Mane “Trap-a-holics” mixtapes.  There was something about the 808 drops and grimy feel that I liked about southern rap and one can see why similar style music is gaining popularity among EDM fans and DJ’s alike.

Trap music has become the step-sibling of dubstep and moombahton which are all part of the ever growing EDM genre.  Will trap be welcomed to the family with open arms or will it be shunned out like your ginger cousin at the family bar-b-q? Only time will tell, but the fact that every major dubstep DJ has been playing “trap” in their sets is a major indication that it is...
