Armin van Buuren at Ocean Club: Show Review

The first Sunday of the summer at Ocean Club was a chilly one. Girls and guys alike traded out their tank tops for sweatshirts and huddled in the tents as they waited for the legend Armin van Buuren to take the newly redesigned DJ booth. His starting time of 11 pm came and went, delayed by some difficulties at the airport earlier in the evening. After being warmed up by Jochen Miller, old-school house DJ, and rising star Kaeno, the crowd was anxious. Armin’s set on his Intense tour was marking the end of an epic 4-day marathon at OC, starting with Knife Party, R3hab and Quintino, and Steve Aoki. Some storm troopers had been there all three days through the cold and rainy Memorial Day weekend. They were tired and wet, but unstoppable. As 11:15 hit, Armin came on stage and raised his hands in the air and the entire club erupted in cheers. An intro mix of “Intense” came on the venue's upgraded speakers.

With the brand new LED wall behind the DJ booth, Armin’s visuals were perfectly coordinated with his tracks for the night. Lyrics to songs off of Intense rose behind him as he dropped monster remixes and tons of trance tracks.  Dancers swirled on the screen as “Waiting For The Night” played and the crowd jumped and sung in unison. As soon as the first chords played of Armin's single, "This Is What It Feels Like", vocalist Trevor Guthrie appeared on stage to sing along. Lyrics flashed on the screen, we sang along with Trevor, and the W&W remix of the track hit the club hard and fast. Cue the madness.

Armin was slaying Ocean Club as his BPM continued to rise with Orjan Nilsen’s “Violetta”, a track that could turn anybody into a 138 fan when combined with purple lasers and confetti cannons. As the night continued to get older and colder, Armin thanked the mob of dancing bodies for coming out regardless of the unpredictable weather Boston is known to bring and was reciprocated with a cheer. He dropped “Humming the Lights”, a track he produced under his alias Gaia that made the Trance Top 1000 list only a few days ago. Finally, he closed with my personal favorite mash up of Photographer and Armin's accapella, "Airport Shivers" and the original mix of "This Is What It Feels Like". To say we liked the set would be an understatement, because Armin's recognition as #1 DJ in the world is truly accurate. We loved it.

Other than the slower tracks from Intense, Armin brought a nearly all-trance set to unexpecting ears at OC. I had the pleasure of chatting with him before the show, where he told me he spins “whatever he feels like playing… [he had] no idea what he was going to play tonight.” Patrons of Ocean Club who heard electro-house the entire weekend were graced by an excellent, traditional, Armin van Buuren trance set in the midst of cold temperatures and drizzly air combined with some champagne showers.  Boston always welcomes Armin with open arms, and we look forward to having him back again soon. Until then, you should pick up Intense and learn all of the words, because I promise you'll be hearing those tracks in the festival circuit this summer.

EDC NY 2013 in Review

By: Max K.

Out of the corner of my eye, tucked slightly back from the front right security rail, a dance circle caught my attention-- one of the best things a festival-goer can hope for.  While dance circles are usually about showing off your fierce dance moves, "PLUR circles", as I like to call them, are anything but a talent show of back and forth competition.

PLUR circles are about encouraging others to let loose, whether you're a spicy shuffler or have the rhythm of a zombie, everyone is welcome and encouraged to have a good time.

At this circle, PLUR was strong and it reverberated throughout its participants and spread to the surrounding people like the most infectious of diseases. Shy people had no choice but to let down their guard and celebrate their turn in the circle.

Dance circles were only one of the many enjoyable moments we shared at last weekend's Electric Daisy Carnival in New York’s Citifield. For two days the Mets' home parking lot played host to 5 stages of electronic music bliss.

The tunes of Morgan Page were the ones that gave rise to the aforementioned dance circle, yet the artist most likely never saw it. The reason being that the dance circle was tucked away to the far left of the stage.

EDC's founder, Pasquale Rotella, promotes the idea that the attendees, not the artists, are the headliners of the Electric Daisy Carnival. In Pasquale’s eyes, the people are what make a festival a joyous event that people remember for generations.

It’s a new concept for festival producers but it was on full display at EDC NY. At every corner, Insomniac events, the festival company responsible for producing the large EDM Festival, had festival interactivity for its attendees which numbered 40,000 on Friday and 50,000 on Saturday.

Insomniac upped the ante when it came to crowd interaction. In addition to carnival rides sprawled across the EDC festival grounds, Insomniac added visually appealing art installations and a new stage.

The Discovery Project, as Insomniac calls it, is their way of displaying up and coming talent. Instead of having these artists open for major artists, Insomniac created another stage called the Wide Awake Art Car to host a full evening of upcoming talent. The funky stage that looked like a pirate ship was captivating and had a glow-in-the-dark dance floor placed in front of it. Insomniac created a different experience at this stage that proved to be more than a just a stopping point for EDC-ers.

Fun new art installations brought a new, visually appealing aspect to the festival. Massive installations in the shape of an octopus and caterpillar were crowd surfed across the main stage audience on both days of the festival. On Day 2, we also saw this type of interaction taken to the next level during Porter Robinson’s closing headline set when giant inflatable balls housing glowing orbs surfed the crowd. The hands on interaction Insomniac gave the fans with the festival added depth to the festival and prevented EDC from blending in with the mass of “other” festivals that have amassed the market.

One of the best things about EDC is the enthusiasm of the attendees to dress up for the carnival theme. This past weekend, daisies decorated every inch of women’s bras as if they were covering a float in a parade. Not to mention there were attendees dressed as our favorite superheroes and a prolific amount of kandi kids in attendance. These nuances are important to the event because they set the PLUR vibe at the onset of the day as opposed to a random group of people congregating to listen to music.

The main stage wasn’t the only place where you could find good times. The four other stages at the festival presented unique sounds to satisfy the widest genre tastes. The Basspod was a stage dedicated exclusively to blasting your brains with bass. More underground attendees enjoyed a full lineup of groovy, deep, and tech house at Neon Garden. Cosmic Meadow and the Kineticfield amassed big name artists from various genres like progressive, trance, and electro.  Although EDC NY lacked depth in some of the eEDM sub genres, the two day festival reached incredibly deep for the short duration it spanned.

Some of EDMBoston’s favorite sets from Friday included Seth Troxler, Mark Knight, Danny Avila, and Figure. Saturday saw winning performances from Quintino, Carl Cox, Afrojack, and Bloody Beatroots.

The New York stop on the road to Vegas was a welcome festival for the Northeast. While the festival wasn’t mind blowing, it was riveting and worth more than the cost of admission and travel from Boston. For this we say: make plans for next year Bostonians!

Splash Closes, Will Reopen as Bliss

(eater.com) Leather District club Splash Ultra Lounge & Burger Bar is now closed and is in the process of being reborn as something called Bliss. Boston Restaurant Talk spotted a Facebook post by Splash owner Frank DePasquale, who writes "Splash lounge is simply a memory Bliss event facility will soon open." Interested patrons are encouraged to book private parties, and so it would seem that Bliss will not be open to the general public, but that has yet to be confirmed. Splash posted a similar update on its page, writing "COMING SOON, Boston`s newest event venue, BLISS !!!" Previously, Splash was temporarily closed by order of the city following citations for overcrowding and underage drinking, and according to an employee from a different DePasquale Ventures venue, Splash has been closed for some time now.

Ferry Corsten at Royale: Boston Show Review

By Mike H

ferry corstenRoyale Nightclub was alive and ready to go, Monday night, as superstar trance DJ Ferry Corsten stopped in to give Boston fans yet another night to remember, in what has already been an incredible Spring season for Royale; playing host to the likes of Markus Schulz, Krewella, Gramatik, Cazzette, and many more.

Coming off an exciting month of March, in which he performed at three ASOT 600 events (Sofia, Miami, and NYC) and the announcement of his collaboration project, New World Punx, with Markus Schulz, Ferry's energy was running high. In an age when old school trance heads are starting to cry out "trance is dying!" as it rises in popularity in the United States, Ferry turned in a performance that would be sure to silence these detractors.

Opting away from the complex visuals and overpowering lights that accompany most DJ sets these days, Ferry kept it all about the music, with a simple yet strong LED backdrop, and some well-placed lasers. Those in attendance couldn't seem to get enough, as Ferry kept the show going past our city's puritan-inspired 2 a.m. curfew. Although the show was slightly smaller than many of the shows this spring, perhaps given that it was on a Monday, there was an incredible vibe throughout the night. Ferry played quite a diverse set, weaving in some of his tunes, as well as sampling some particularly surprising artists, including a remix of The Bloody Beetroots.

With three Above & Beyond shows at Royale next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and Armin van Buuren hitting Ocean Club on Sunday the 26th, this show was just what we needed to get us in the mood for a serious trance binge!

Keep up to date on upcoming shows with the EDM Boston Calendar of Events!

BT Slams Porter Robinson Over Unfinished Tracks

(Inthemix) BT treated his Twitter audience to a rare, lengthy diatribe on another artist, Porter Robinson. After preparing his readers for a “long story,” BT began to explain how he first found out about Robinson via MySpace three years ago. He says he struck up a friendship with the young producer (after talking with his parents – Robinson was but a high schooler then), and the two even worked on some tracks together.

As Robinson’s star began to rise through big room gigs, festival dates, and an official Lady Gaga remix, BT found him harder to contact – shrouded often by a team of agents, managers, and other “advisors.” While BT was understanding of this development, he describes Robinson himself as being “too cool to interact,” placing the blame squarely on the artist, not just his entourage. The tipping point came when Robinson told BT he could no longer finish the tracks they had begun working on together.

BT admits to having his feelings hurt by Robinson after being rebuffed by an artist who he felt personally responsible for bringing to a broader audience. But rather than make this a personal attack on Robinson (he calls the young DJ a “real talent”), BT goes on to use his experiences with him as an example of how the younger generation of DJs are similarly “self focused & selfish.” When he was an up-and-comer, BT says DJs like Sasha helped him, and he “vowed to pay it forward” when he could.

BT ended his “rant” with some advice: “So I hope you (and other young producers reading this) take this as a cautionary tale. Remember to act with respect and pay it forward.”

Tiesto, who BT shared Robinson’s tracks with and became an early supporter, weighed in as well, citing the lack of loyalty in younger producers (though Tiësto’s original tweet has since been deleted).

BT has around 622,000 Twitter followers; Robinson has about 216,000. Thus far, Robinson has not responded.

4th annual Together festival goes beyond the beat

(BostonGlobe) Now in its fourth year, the Together Festival, a weeklong event primarily known for its lineup of electronic music showcases, is set to launch this Sunday. While electronic music fans will recognize many of the big crossover names and underground favorites — including Crystal Castles, Four Tet, Gold Panda, Duke Dumont, !!!, Juicy J, Tiga, Le1f, and Zomby, as well as regional upstarts like Doctor Jeep, André Obin, Moldy, and M|O|D — this year’s programming further emphasizes the art and technology aspects of Together’s larger mission.

With so many shows and daytime panels, it can be hard to figure out which ones are must-see, so we spoke with creative director David Day, and daytime event coordinator Sara Skolnick to narrow down your best options depending on your interests.

For specific details on each event and the full schedule check www.togetherboston.com/schedule.

For the person who wants to be at the center of the action

Many of the week’s performances will take place at the Middle East Downstairs, which has been rebranded as the Together Central Stage for the week. It won’t be the same rock club you’re familiar with, however; the Boston design firm Skeptic is making over the space. “They’re putting in this fantastic light installation that’s going to be sound reactive,” Day explains. “It’s going to look a lot different down there.”

For the visually minded

Together is the “culmination of music, art, and technology, which is what we’ve been pushing this year,” Day says. “Every event needs to have some level of those three things.” Perhaps the best example of that comes on Thursday at the Museum of Fine Arts, where multimedia artist and VJ Brian Kane’s “HDADD+” presents a set of live visual and audio mixing and projection that explores the way we interact with technology — on our phones, for example — and turns it into a collage of sight and sound.

For the globally minded local artist

Like most of the daytime panels and discussions, which are free and open to the public, “Grassroots Digital” on Thursday will be held at Together headquarters at 330 Mass. Ave., Cambridge — in the former Salvation Army space. This panel looks into the newly developing avenues for artists on the grass-roots level around the world to interject their creative perspective into the international cultural conversation. Led by Wayne Marshall (a renowned music writer, DJ, and teacher at Harvard) along with Toy Selectah (a pioneering hip-hop en Español DJ), Skolnick says this discussion will use examples of artists who have eschewed the traditional record label structure, and highlight some of the means of “bringing new light to these people that are producing and normally wouldn’t have any outlets for recognition.”

For the fan who wants to have been there when . . .

The Turbo Recordings showcase could very well be the week’s must-see show. On May 17 at the Middle East Downstairs, the taste-making label hosts Duke Dumont, Nautiluss, Bordello, and Doctor Jeep. Dumont is the producer behind the irresistible British No. 1 single “Need U (100%).” “Five years from now when he’s playing the Bank of America Pavilion, people will be like, ‘I saw him at the Middle East Downstairs,’ ” Day says.

For the tech-head musician

Ableton, the music production software widely used by many of the artists in the genre to produce electronic music, will hold a demonstration of its new Push controller on May 17 at the Mmmmaven Project space in Central Square along with Berklee associate professor Loudon Stearns. “It’s in such high demand people just want to come and gawk at it,” Day explains. “It’s almost frightening how this machine can manipulate music.”

For the less traditional musician on their grind

“Can’t Knock the Hustle — Econ 101 for the Independent Musician” on May 17, moderated by Max Pearl of Cluster magazine, “is meant to discuss the realities of being an independent musician,” Skolnick explains. “What to do if you don’t have the privilege to tour, take time off from work while you’re trying to support family,” and other hurdles to making a splash in the business. It will also explore how race, class, and gender affect the way music is produced and shared now throughout the world. Panelists include a broad spectrum of promoters, artists, and thinkers from across the music industry such as Natalia Linares, Dan Hirsch, George Machado, and Matt Shadetek.

For the community-minded

On May 18, the Central Square Business Association is throwing another World’s Fair at University Park on Sidney Street. A celebration of music, food, and art, and of Central Square's recent designation as an official Cultural District of Massachusetts, it’s a coming together of the entire community that also coincides with Central Square Open Studios. Together is providing the day’s soundtrack, with multiple stages of DJs and performers, including a Soul Train runway for area dance groups.

For the exhausted show-goer

When all the dust has settled by next Sunday, music fans will want to relax in a dark room for some relative quiet. The screening of Romi Agel and Holger Wick’s “We Are Modeselektor” at the MFA proves a respite. The documentary follows the fascinating career of the veteran German techno duo from the early days of rave on up through the present.

But Together creative director David Day insists it’s not an EDM fest.

Steve Lawler at Bijou

steve lawler djing
Steve Lawler, the British tech-disco producer and DJ will be hitting Boston's Bijou nightclub on Friday, May 10. Defined as "an electronic artist who defies generic boundaries, ever since his days organising the infamous UK motor way raves back in the early 90ʻs", Lawler's style will play to fans of any and all electronic music, as his tech/house/disco/deep blend seems to encompass all genres and defines him as a unique and outstanding DJ.

Additionally Bijou has been booking huge talent, and as it is one of our favorite venues, we can't wait to see what else they will be bringing to the table.

Gramatik at Royale - Show Review

By Mike Hurowitz

As electronic dance music continues to grow in popularity, the short attention spans that defines the music industry requires artists to continually strive for new ways to wow fans. With EDM involving at an ever-increasing rate, it is becoming clear that a significant way in which some artists are meeting the demand for innovation is by adding elements of live music into performances.

Last week Royale Nightclub got in on the live EDM trend, playing host to Gramatik. An up and coming artist currently signed to Derek Vincent Smith's label, Pretty Lights Music, Gramatik has been surging in popularity, coming off an opening spot on the Bassnectar tour to set off on his own. Alongside Gramatik was the producer and guitarist, F.A.Q.

Unlike many electronic shows, which rely solely on the DJ to get things going, Gramatik took a back seat for the first couple minutes, allowing a funky guitar riff from Eric Mendelson to get the show started. Mixing his production seamlessly with the guitarist, Gramatik's got into the mix, dropping beats that sounded like something of a fusion of Pretty Lights, Bassnectar, and the Lord Himself. As one man put it, leaning to shout in my ear during a particularly jazzy tune, "if you look up 'funky' in the dictionary, there's a picture of Gramatik!"

Perhaps the most special part of the show, however, was the fact that, apart from all the lights and music, there was a message behind the mayhem. During a remix of "Nexus", by Dr. Kucho, Gramatik displayed across the screen the message, "Stop Cispa", a reference to the movement to block a piece of legislation that many artists have decried as an invasion of our internet privacy. Another particularly moving part of the show came when the visuals displayed a sequence of flying through the streets of Boston, with the words "Boston Strong" displayed across the screen.

The show was a spectacle to behold. Gramatik left his mark on an ecstatic Boston crowd, many of whom had not expected as strong a performance as he gave. As artists such as Gramatik, Griz, Big Gigantic and more continue to prove to us the worth of live elements in EDM, we eagerly await what is in store!

Keep up to date on all upcoming shows with the EDM Boston Calendar of Events!

Armin Van Buuren On American Day Time TV

So Armin Van Buuren stopped by Wendy Williams show this afternoon. Take a view of what happened on the show as he promoted his new album:

Live Nation to Purchase 50% Stake in Insomniac Events

Some sources are now saying that Live Nation is acquiring 51% of Insomniac, which would give them the majority of the company. As more information comes in, we will update this page.

(Billboard) Live Nation is close to finalizing a deal to buy a 50% stake in EDM promoter Insomniac Events, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal, which cited people familiar with the deal.

This information, including the speculative numbers (which valued this “about 50% stake” at $50 million), has been circulating throughout the music industry for months, with chatter peaking since Live Nation rival SFX Entertainment initially got in bed with Insomniac rival ID&T in January, eventually acquiring 75%of the Tomorrowland promoter (which was valued at $130 million total) in March. The first U.S. edition of the hit Belgian festival, dubbed TomorrowWorld, is set for September 27-29 in Atlanta.

Last May, Live Nation acquired Cream Holdings Limited, a pillar of the EDM entertainment scene, which also gave Live Nation the exclusive rights to Creamfields Festivals, which have been held all over the world since the company's launch in 1998.

In the past several weeks, Insomniac CEO Pasquale Rotella has reportedly been spotted with Live Nation president/CEO Michael Rapino at several events in Los Angeles. Hard Events -- founded by Gary Richards, who sold the company to Live Nation last year, and joined its full-time team -- will have a stage at Insomniac's Electric Daisy Carnival this year, a lineup announced on May 1 revealed.

Insomniac announced on May 29 that tickets to EDC, its marquis event at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on June 21-23, had sold out. The festival’s three-day capacity is 345,000.

Berklee College Music to Impact EDM Scene

berkelee college music

Alot of great music comes out of our local colleges, and Berklee College of Music houses some of the best to come out of Boston. Recently while perusing the interwebs, we came across an Artist called Auvic.

Auvic is a project that started in early 2011, experimenting in neo-classical complex electro and funky complex electro. Through the past year, Auvic stepped into a more melodic style and released the singles Starships and Paradigm, along with his debut album, Voices. He has taken inspiration from different types of music, personal situations, landscapes, and cityscapes of Southern California. When he moved to Boston in January of 2013 to attend school, inspiration flourished from the vibes of the city and the people the city breathed.

Coincidently, Auvic's track was recently featured on The Gareth Emery's Podcast.
