Bostons Ring in New Year with Swedish House Mafia
12/31/2012 10:00:00 AM
2013, new years, swedish house mafia
Two weeks ago when we announced Boston's EDM FM radio station evolution 101.7, we said that this would be Boston's chance to play host to even more talent.
Well that is already going into effect at a rampid pace. Tonight from 10pm-12am Swedish House Mafia will takeover the airwaves on Boston's Evolution 101.7, to wish Boston a happy New Year. During the broadcast you will hear Swedish House Mafia play some of their favorite tracks and discuss their favorite moments from 2012. In addition, the show also will include an exclusive, never before aired segment recorded live at their historic last UK show at Milton Keynes Bowl.
To that we say
Cheers!

How Diplo's #ExpressYourself Campaign Took on Life of Its Own
12/31/2012 10:00:00 AM
diplo, major lazer
(Billboard) Ask any Diplo or Major Lazer fan what comes to mind when you say "Express Yourself" and chances are they'll say something along the lines of "make it clap."
For anyone wondering what that means, let's take a look at how a social-media campaign took on a life of its own, starting way back in June with a blog post and a single.
From there, the campaign took off: Diplo's management reports that from late July through the end of August, over 31,000 Tweets included the #ExpressYourself hashtag. Four months later, in December, more than 10,000 Tweets #ExpressYourself Tweets have been sent.
What's surprising about that? The campaign ended in late June.
During the contest, Diplo got into the action and RT'd many of the entries. The Mad Decent blog served as the digital archive for all entries received during the contest period.
Mad Decent announced the winners on June 23, again on their blog, noting that Diplo "couldn't pick just one winner so instead has selected 1 grand prize winner plus 5 additional winners, all receiving the coveted Diplo/MajorLazer guestlist for life!"
But the story didn't end there.
The best thing about Diplo's #ExpressYourself campaign is the way it continued after the campaign had officially ended. What made it so successful?
It was authentic. A key to a good social media campaign is authenticity. This campaign was a key part of the song and video, and turned that into the mechanism to enter the contest. And the dance style featured in the video was already an existing dance style.
It embraced fans' passion. Music fans are PASSIONATE. If you need an example, check any of the hashtags on Twitter related to major artists for proof - #Barbz (Nicki Minaj), #KatyCats (Katy Perry) or even #MJFam (Michael Jackson). Diplo and his team embraced their fan's passion - another winning element.
It was sexy. The dance is anything but subtle!
Participation was rewarded. Everyone loves a pat on the back every now and then, even if that's in the form of a RT. By involving Diplo and the Mad Decent blog in the campaign, participants all received digital "pats on the back" via RT's and blog posts for their submissions, creating an inclusive sense of community and rewarding all, not just the contest winners.

Steve Angello Is Looking Forward to Being Finished With Swedish House Mafia
12/28/2012 04:23:00 PM
steve angello, swedish house mafia
(LA Weekly) There was a moment a few years back when Steve Angello was leaving a hotel in his native Sweden and found a few reporters waiting outside. They asked him what his plans were for the day. He told them nothing much. The response made the front page of the next day's newspaper.
"That was the moment," Angello says, "I knew things were different."
And they've remained different ever since. As one third of DJ supergroup Swedish House Mafia, Angello -- along with Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso -- has been on the forefront of EDM's takeover of popular music and top 40 radio. The group formed in 2008, progressing through the club scene and ultimately building a massive international fanbase. They did so on the basis of their big beat dance music, ginormous live shows, the unhinged party rave atmosphere they concocted, and crossover hits like "One" and the Grammy nominated "Don't You Worry Child." (Watch your back, Al Walser!)
Last December, Swedish House Mafia was the first electronic act to play New York's Madison Square Garden, and the show sold out in 16 minutes. They later became one of the few electronic acts to ever headline the mainstage at Coachella.
Backstage before that show, the guys said it took "thousands" of emails and "a dozen" flights to get the three of them in the same place. They were joking, but a certain strain was apparent, and two months later, the group announced...

For me electronic music has always been about the escape from the mundane day to day tasks and enjoying life and being around fun people. In Avicii & Nicky Romero's new video they have captured that exact feeling, albeit in a unique woman.

Boston's Richard Fraioli, is by no means a mega producer. However the Massachusetts native is more then experienced when it comes to running the decks at any of the various nightclubs he works in the new england area. So much so that Ultra Music Festival has consistently asked him to play at their prized festival.
In addition, to his multiple gigs he plays a week and his podcast, Fraioli squeezes studio time. Fraioli's new Bootleg of Rihanna's "Right Now" is a prized bootleg that should help keep him a Boston representative in the dance arena. This bootleg will offer EDM fans the perfect mix to rage to, instead of the lame original that squanders and can leave your party feeling flat when it needs a kick. So grab RIGHT NOW free download now:

Parrots 'DISLIKE' Dance Music, Says Study
12/27/2012 10:00:00 AM
article, dance music, parrot
(NME.com)A new study has found that parrots have an 'intense dislike' of dance music.
In findings published in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science - via The Telegraph - researchers found that a pair of African grey parrots had wide ranging tastes in music, but both hated dance music.
The birds, from a popular breed of pet parrot, both bobbed their heads along to rock and folk, but were left distressed by electronic dance music.
Dr Franck Péron of the University of Lincoln, said: "The birds clearly showed preferences. One preferred the rhythmic and one preferred the classical."
Music in the rhythmic category included U2, UB40 and Joan Baez whilst Bach was one of the classical artists played to the birds.
He said that the birds were not keen on the music by The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers.
He explained: "The electronic dance music was not appropriate for them. We had the radio on in the office and when it was a very fast beat, they started to scream; not in a friendly, communicative way but in a distressed, scared way. They seem to like pop music when there is a voice.

Evolution 101.7 Boston EDM Radio Line Up
Early today we broke the news that a new Boston EDM FM radio station hit the airwaves on 101.7. It's a massive move by Clear Channel Media and definitely their testing market to see if EDM will be successful on the radio. If it is, we believe you will see similar radio stations pop up across the country.
That being said, below you can find the weekly lineup for the current week. Enjoy!
Boston EDM FM Radio Station Launches - Making Country's First
The wild ride for Electronic Dance Music in Boston continues! Whether you've been following EDMBoston.com from the start or joined the movement today with the big news, it has been a wild ride. Our city went from a scene remiss of public acknowledgement of dance music to it being one of the hottest cities in the country for dance music. Along the way, we saw artists gradually increasing their frequency to the hub to it now being a semi-mandatory stopping point for them.
This proliferation of electronic music in Boston hasn’t gone unnoticed. Among the people paying attention are the executives at Clear Channel Media. This week they took the risk and launched Evolution radio on FM 101.7. If that station is familiar to you it is the old home of indie rock station, WFNX(now relegated to online radio).
Evolution, 101.7 is Clear Channel Media’s first broadcasted EDM station in the country. It launched yesterday (December 20 at 6pm) on 101.7, which is now renamed WHBA, with a special hour-long program by Pete Tong. Pete Tong (the mastermind behind the infamous Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1).
Now Evolution radio isn’t exactly unique to Boston. The radio station will be a broadcast extension of the popular online station Evolution on iHeartRadio. Nevertheless, this station will feature a two hour daily show from Pete Tong called “All gone Pete Tong”. In the program Pete will feature his essential New Tune of the Week, as well as the hottest tracks from the global Top 100 chart on Beatport.com. Monday-Friday 7-9pm. In addition, we will be spoiled with programs from Diplo, Wolfgang Gartner, Fatboy Slim, Manufactured Superstars, Paul Van Dyk, Roger Sanchez, Congorock, Dillon Francis, John Dahlback, and the list goes on.
"We've seen the impact of EDM in Boston through music downloads, sold-out concerts and passion for iHeartRadio's new Evolution channel," said Dylan Sprague, Vice President of Programming for Clear Channel Media and Entertainment Boston. "We're proud to bring Evolution 101.7, the company's first EDM broadcast station, to Boston, and to team up with format-leading artists like Pete Tong. The music scene in Boston has a vibrant EDM community as well as a rich history of bringing new music to audiences in the area and around the country. We're excited to continue the tradition by giving dance music a home on Boston's airwaves."
We are extremely happy that Boston has been so blessed for this experiment. We are hoping Evolution radio sees a big jolt in numbers upfront to encourage Clear Channel Media to build an Evolution radio Studio in Boston. If that happens you can guarantee that we will be blessed much like NYC is with the SiriusXM studio and the DJs that visit that with frequency.

Feed Me Boston Double Header Announced
12/20/2012 02:00:00 PM
feed me, mord fustang
Well the PR people have dropped the tour poster and let us know that Mord Fustang will be joining Feed Me on his Teeth Tour. Feed Me's Boston show is going to be a crazy show and has the makings to be the best tour/show to hit Boston this winter.
Things will be going down at Royale on Monday February 4 and February 5.
We love the risk this tour is taking with booking back to back nights in the city. If you remember correctly no one has done this in the last year, at least that we are aware of off the top of our heads.
We're really looking forward to Boston proving once again that our scene is alive, healthy and can support artists in this manner.

Minnesota Interview & Download | Mic'd Up
Recently, we caught up with Minnesota at the Middle East and got to ask him a few questions about his tour and his newest music. Below is our interview, as well as a download for his new remix of Adventure Club.
Minnesota! Welcome to Boston! How are you doing today? I know you're on your shadow boxing tour, can you tell us a bit about that, and how that name came about?
Yeah, I've been touring with Zion I and the name is going off of their album. I'm not really sure where they got their name. We were trying to work together to come with a cool name for the tour, and I didnt really have an idea so we called it. It sounds cool and it works!
With the SnowGlobe festival around the corner, how do you approach playing festivals with a more mellow atmosphere, rather than at more mainstream events?
I feel like most of the festivals I play have a...

EDM Boston Proudly Supports PLUR The Movie
12/11/2012 08:59:00 PM
edm, edm boston, edm revolution, electronic dance music, feature film, hollywood, peace love unity and respect, plur, PLUR movie, plur the movie, ravers, ravers motto
Here at EDM Boston we like to consider ourselves ravers, with respect to the scene and electronic music. We appreciate every event we get to attend and review our overall experiences based on how we feel the community feels that night-- that is, are they peaceful? In addition, did the DJ tap into the emotion in the venue and do something special with their set? Did everyone feel the love with each other through the music? Is there unity in the crowd, but more importantly, is there respect for one another?
PLUR, as most of you all have heard, stands for Peace, Love, Unity and Respect. Widely regarded as "The Raver's Motto", we try to live by these four ideals and spread the message about PLUR at all raves, shows, festivals and events we go to. You can read more about what plur is here.
Which is why we're proud to announce that EDM Boston supports the feature-length film, "PLUR" the movie.
| "PLUR is not a documentary... PLUR is the first feature film about the Electronic Dance Music (EDM) revolution."
The film features the story of an underdog DJ and his friends. 18 year old Cherokee produces the most popular EDM song of the summer and his fame takes off. All of a sudden, he becomes the most in-demand producer around and has to learn to adapt to the fast-paced, rockstar lifestyle. EDM brings him and his friends together, but also brings some tempting challenges along the way. Will he lose sight of what he stands for, or will he remember PLUR?
Below is the concept trailer. Don't forget, this is not a documentary, but a feature film that must be shot!
If you worry that this film is not being produced by ravers, don't. They understand that it is a "culture that's sacred because it can change your life". Everyone behind the scenes is a true believer in PLUR, at both the underground and festival level of the EDM scene.
Check out their website PLURmovie.com and Facebook.
EDM Boston believes in PLUR and you should too!
Get your PLUR on at these Boston events!

Why It Isn't ALWAYS about NEW music
12/10/2012 01:53:00 PM
new music
As I sit here on my lunch break after approximately a week off from actively blogging I look back on my collection of music. 15 minutes remain before I go back to work and I decided to pull up some Afrojack. Bangduck, Pacha on Acid hits my ears and right after follows his collaboration with Chuckie called "Freeriders". I sit and listen to the beats as I pull away from facebook to focus on the bliss I hear. My insatiable thirst for new music the last 10 months has deprived me of reflecting on some of the older music that I use to listen to.
Had I more time who knows what I would have dugg into? Maybe Paul Van Dyk "politics of dance" as its been a lengthy period since i've spun that.
The point of the blog post is, I encourage you to cut off your Facebook feed (except EDMBoston.com of course) and reflect on your catalog. You'll be pleasantly surprised at what you find and how amazing it is to listen to "old" stuff that you have spun in a while.
and if your catalog only consists of new stuff ask a friend for something old you should check out
Cheers
Max
PS how amazing is prydz - melo. gahhhhh

M4SONIC : The next Madeon?
While Madeon launched his career by a youtube video of him using ableton, M4SONIC has just one-upped this and put out a video with TWO pads. While some can just press buttons and make some good sounds, this track in my opinion is better than Madeon. Check it out and tell us your thoughts!

Zedd Interviewed for Huffington Post by Tommie Sunshine
12/03/2012 03:00:00 PM
interview, tommie sunshine, zedd
Tommie Sunshine isn't a man of few words and to those that follow his social media you know all to well. So who better then he to dig into Zedd and get him to open up about things? Well he did just that for HuffingtonPost
(Huffington Post) Note: HuffPost Entertainment linked up Zedd, one of electronic dance music's hottest young producers, with Tommie Sunshine. Sunshine, a decades-long mainstay in the worlds of DJ'ing and producing, interviewed Zedd about working with Lady Gaga, producing his first studio album, "Clarity" and what it's like to be an in-demand producer at the age of 23. We've included Sunshine's introduction and the entire, unedited Q&A, below.
When I played at Pacha here in NYC on New Year's Day 2011, there was a track that seemed to rock the room just a bit harder than all the others. It was a remix of just barely breaking Skrillex by a relatively unknown producer at the time named Zedd. I reached out to him on Soundcloud and we have been in touch ever since. That first set of exchanges made me realize just how different of an artist Zedd was when his reply to the producer/DJ standard, "send me a .zip of your tunes" was "what songs do u like to have? I usually don't do this, in respect of the labels." No one had ever said that to me before and I had so much respect for him instantly.
I knew at that moment...

Was Cash Berlin A PR Stunt? Hammerica thinks so!
11/30/2012 11:00:00 AM
armin van buuren, cash berlin, Dash Berlin
Post from Hammerica
Twitter & the Trancefamily were on fire this week after Dash Berlin tweeted:
Just heard that I will not be playig at #ASOT600
Armin seemed surprised and publicly said he would check out what was going on. Then Armin stated:
I just spoke to my agent and we’ve NEVER offered any other DJ more money than this time. Why @Dashberlin ? And why do you play it like this?
Twitter hell broke loose and a gazillion of both cheesy and clever Cash Berlin memes flooded the internet.
Thruth be told: THIS IS A BRILLIANT PR STUNT
No of course there is no beef between Armin and Dash. Agreements have long been signed. Money has been transferred – But to cause an extra steer and get the news trending, TEAM ARMADA did something that was previously only known to rappers: Create a fake beef that will ultimately make it to the mainstream media.
The beef was reported in one of Holland’s biggest papers, Sp!ts:
Instead of paying hard cash for advertising campaigns online, ARMADA, Dash and Armin just got themselves a new stream of FREE publicity.
Still the memes and Youtube vids were pretty funny!
So thanks Armada, Dash and Armin for the laughs!

Camp Bisco Goers Sues Festival After having Bad Reaction to Drugs Taken at Festival
11/29/2012 02:00:00 PM
camp bisco
For all the uninformed parents out there that think festivals are responsible for your angel, you send off to festivals, lets get one thing straight. NO ONE is responsible for your delinquent children except you. If they do drugs, its at their own risk, plain and simple. If they have a bad reaction its not on the medical staff or the festival's responsibility. They provide medical tents to try and help people and provide as much help as they can, not to guarantee a revival from shooting an amalgamation of drugs that would make even charlie sheen blush and say "I wouldn't even touch that".
(TimesUnion) The mother of a comatose Schenectady woman has filed a notice of claim on her daughter's behalf against organizers of the hugely popular Camp Bisco summer music festival and the town of Duanesburg, where it was held.
Heather Bynum was with friends at the festival at Indian Lookout Country Club shortly before 5 p.m. July 12 when she suffered a "bad reaction to a bad drug," according to attorney Paul Wein of the Guilderland law firm representing Bynum in the claim.
Filed in state Supreme Court in Schenectady County, the claim for personal injuries and pain and suffering contends "medical (staff) was slow to respond and failed to provide appropriate and/or timely care" and that Bynum's injuries were caused by the "negligence, recklessness" and "carelessness" because of the lack of care she received.
Wein was unsure how much time elapsed between Bynum's adverse reaction to the drug and when she received medical attention, but he said her condition had worsened by the time she was transported in a golf cart to a waiting ambulance.
"This was foreseeable and they took no steps to prepare for it and head it off at the pass," said Wein.
He and his law partner, Cynthia LaFave, said organizers should have been prepared for medical emergencies because of the history of drug use among Camp Bisco revelers.
Chad Shearer, who handles public relations for Camp Bisco, said Tuesday he would contact the promoter, who Shearer later said did not immediately call him back.
LaFave said Bynum, who is a patient at Ellis Hospital, is a quadriplegic, has minimal consciousness, can't speak and only recently starting breathing on her own.
"Her care for the rest of her life will be astronomical," said LaFave. "If they are going to have these big functions with all these people, they are responsible for providing medical assistance to people there."
The claim, which was filed both in state Supreme Court and the Court of Claims, also names the Duanesburg Planning Board, Duanesburg Town Board, Schenectady County Public Health and Schenectady County as defendants. A notice of claim is a precursor to a lawsuit.
"She ended up not being taken care of in a timely manner," said LaFave
Schenectady County Attorney Chris Gardner declined comment, saying the county had not yet been served with the claim. Duanesburg Supervisor Rene Merrihew did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
The incident occurred a day after a 29-year-old New Jersey man was found dead in his tent after an apparent drug overdose at the Camp Bisco festival from July 12 to 14. State troopers have said they found Xanax and hydrocodone inside his tent, along with some marijuana.
Bynum's mother, Deborah Bynum, also names the state in a notice of intention to file a claim in state Court of Claims.

Spanish Promoter Bans Computer Synch Program Traktor From Events
DJ Techtools) WIP, a Barcelona-based agency and label that throws parties, books events and manages artists, has issued a strong statement on Facebook that they’re no longer going to allow Native Instruments’ Traktor DJ software to be used at events that they throw in the future.
In their statement (Editor’s Update 4:40Pm PST: looks like their Facebook note was taken down or deleted!) the group bemoans not the technology itself, but the type of DJs and performers use the software as some type of a crutch:
“The real issue is with “artists” who swear they can play any format be it CD, vinyl, usb and or Traktor but whose Traktor sets are nothing but stale, bland and outright insulting to a paying crowd and promoter. We’ve also grown tired of the endless issues with missing cables, problems with timecode (learn how to use your gear before you play out), taking up the previous Dj’s time to set up your gear (cause you didn’t want to come to the club early and set up your Traktor), how is it you play 5 times a week and still don’t know how to set it up right? And, more importantly we’re fed up with the general laziness shown by 99% of “artists” that we’ve seen and heard playing Traktor.”
EDMBoston Take: By and large we have to applaude WIP's, the Spanish Promoter, actions here. The problem is that most dj's utilizing traktor lack superior quality DJ skills to entertain a crowd. They auto synch up tracks and are the epitimy of flanger knob turners. It's akeen to watching a pop star lip synch his/her performance. We know the nay sayers are going to say what about DJ Shiftee, Craze, and Loco Dice that utilize traktor in the creative way that it's suppose to be used. That is the unfortunate downside. However, how many performers can you say are operating traktor in that manner? We've seen very few, especially on the local level.
We think what this promoter should have done is stopped booking progressive/electro house artists that synching tracks on traktor.
We think what this promoter should have done is stopped booking progressive/electro house artists that synching tracks on traktor.
Nevertheless, I'm sure this Barcelona agency won't have any problems bending it's rules when it comes to an artist like loco dice.

While we’re absolutely not going to pretend like we haven’t seen performers with a lazy style in the club, it’s odd to see this agency point the finger at Traktor. What about performers who cycle through the same CDs every single gig, whose set lists look identical every night? You don’t need to use Traktor to be a bad DJ – Ableton, Scratch Live, ITCH, CD, and even vinyl DJs all are capable of sitting back and not putting on incredible sets if they’re not into it.
Banning Traktor seems a bit excessive – why not instead make sure that the artist puts on great shows? A little bit of research can go a long way, and that’s something that a connected agency and clever event promoter should have a responsibility to do.

This is what djing is all about. Having complete control over the music being pumped out on the speakers and vibe building and decending in the room. Not spitting out two tracks you beat match together.

Steve Aoki & Michael Phelps Go White Raver-Rafting

(Craveonline) Dim Mak Mondays at Club XS on Las Vegas’ strip have become a notorious spot to see Aoki’s antics at their craziest. Known for throwing cake and spraying champagne, the DJ is also noted for his on-stage celebrity guests. The most recent guest was Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps. Steve Aoki sets the scene.
“He’s the man. It was actually the first time I’d ever met him face to face. We have a few mutual friends, like poker friends, and Soul Republic. We’re connected through them. He came out and was like “I love No Beef. I used to play it before races.” He came out with me on stage, we ‘white-raver rafted’ over the crowd. I was a bit worried. I was like “all right Michael, you go and do it on your own.” And he was like “No man! We do this together!” There were a lot of girls right there and they were in heels. But I jumped in first; he was at the tail end. Then 10 seconds later I look back and he’s already out. I think he capsized.”
If you can’t imagine it, here’s a picture of the ‘whiteraver rafting’ from Aoki’s instagram. Rafting over a sea of fans isn’t the only thing that Aoki and Phelps share. Aoki elaborates, “Right after my set, we played [poker] from like 4 in the morning ’til 10am straight. He’s still probably at the table.” No stranger to placing a bet or two, Stryker asked who Aoki would rather sit at a poker table with; Phil “the Unabomber” Laak or Antonio “The Magician” Esfandiari.
Aoki laughed, replying, “Both those guys are good friends. Antonio actually taught me. I would have to say Antonio because I know him better but at the same time I don’t. We have prop bets going on throughout the whole year. We made one that actually changed my lifestyle. It’s 12 workouts every month and every time you miss it, you play $100. It’s a gentleman’s bet. It’s just your word and you stick to it.”

Deadmau5 on Highest-Paid DJs List, Mouse Head's Branding Power ~Billboard
(Billboard.biz) Deadmau5 sat down for a keynote Q&A at Billboard's FutureSound Conference an discussed the health of the EDM genre, the changes he's seen in dance music appreciationn, and the big business behind the craze.
Talking about the health and vitality of the genre, Deadmau5 -- the alias of Joel Zimmerman -- twisted the acronym EDM to "event-driven marketing," and compared the craze to the disco of the 1970s. "[Disco] had some hangtime -- 10, 15, 17 years tops," he told Billboard Editorial Director Bill Werde. "Not too many people are forward-thinking about electronic music."
He also brought up and slammed a Forbes report from August on " The World's Highest-Paid DJs" in which he was listed at No. 6 with a reported $11.5 million in annual earnings, a figure that he argued was inaccurate.
"After I saw the article, I called my manager and said, 'Yo, what the f---? I'm $9 million short, dude. We gotta talk,'" Zimmerman joked. "Nobody is making that kind of money."
When it came to his own brand -- Zimmerman will always be associated with his famous oversized mouse head -- he said he had noticed a trend toward branding gimmicks in recent years. "I'm not gonna condemn them for doing that, because "oh, I was the first guy to put something on my head,'" he said. "I can't have any hatred for anyone doing that, but I can understand how hard it must be to have a unifying brand identity with your art."

MDK - Katana (Original Mix)
MDK aka Morgan David King is an electronic producer from Vancouver, Canada. We choose his newest song “Katana” because of its unique approach to dubstep, that takes us away to japan with its influenced wobbles and orchestral work. Not sure how the piece would work at a party but its a fun listen to break up from the mundane
