GrooveBoston Goes Behind the Music: Learn how they compose their sets!

Grooveboston is an event production company that travels around with a mobile club in tote to entertain private private parties.  Most often you can find them on college campuses throwing down school sponsored raves.
Lucky for us they have revealed what goes on "behind the music"
(Grooveboston)You’ve seen the results:  If we’ve done our job, we end up with a CRAZY show.  Thousands of people, all on the same page musically; dirty beats, a couple of deep drops; maybe some throwbacks or curveballs.  After a headline set, the lights come up, you’re sweaty and fatigued (emotionally and physically), and you’re ready to go pass out.  THAT is the face-rocking experience.

So how do we get there?

Here We Go - Hard Rock Sofa & Swanky Tunes[Axtone]

The russian collectives of Hard Rock Sofa and Swanky Tunes have come together under the roof of axtone to write another collaboration track.  However, "Here We Go" stands for more then just another progressive track.

"Here We Go" is fool proof festival fuel that turns a banging snare drum buildup and synths into an all out mind altering beat after the drop.  This is hands in the air material.  We also found the the drop in the track reminiscent of a modern version of the famous synth contained in the Blade theme song Vampire Dance Club.

So "Here We Go!":

PUSHING BUTTONS OR PUSHING BOUNDARIES? Bassnectar Explains

Bassnectar at EDC - Vava Voom Tour 2012Lorin reopens the Fan Bass vault and answers a classic question about performing and DJing that has been the subject of much recent internet hype waffle:

QUESTION: Hey Lorin – I’ve always wondered, and I think I speak for a lot of people when I ask this, but what exactly do you do on stage when you’re performing live? A lot of people argue that electronic music is nothing more than a DJ pushing buttons and that it takes “no skill.” I always tell them it is much more than that – obviously it takes skill to produce everything that you have, and I feel like your shows do in fact involve much more than just pressing play and pretending to mess with knobs, but could you please elaborate on how you actually do perform? I think that a lot of people are also curious. Keep spreading the word brotha!!! – kidonwheels

=======================================

This is a long answer. And yet I feel I am leaving a lot out. It is a complex issue, and I considered posting a 1,438 part tweet but this seemed like a better approach, so here are my thoughts on it:

Personally, i have a really technical style of DJing, and a very aggressive/interactive approach to playing a set: i like to get my hands dirty, take risks, and steer people on a powerful journey. I am constantly pushing myself beyond my comfort zone, expanding the boundaries of how to make people

Afrojack Breaks Silence on Paris Hilton DJing

Most of you have seen or read about Paris Hilton's newest ambition being a DJ.  Over the weekend DJ Paris Hilton's Debut  as a DJ at the Pop Musical Festival in Brazil.  It didn't go so hot.  Okay it was a complete fail that saw her make almost every amateur dj mistake all within one set.

Surrounding the fiasco is her ex-boyfriend Afrojack.  Reason being was Nick (aka Afrojack) produced her original tracks and even had her touring with him.  Making it evident he was mentoring her closely. As a result he has come under fire from his fans and edm fans in general.  They proclaimed him a trader and a sell out.  It certainly was an interesting move for afrojack to combine business with pleasure, but it happened.

Afrojack has broken his silence surrounding the issue and released the statement to Dancing Astronaut.

Best EDM Article We've Read: Press Play? Hit Start

One of the best reads from the last month. Its long but worth it!

Article from Hot Water Inc

"There’s been a lot of noise over the past few weeks, from various people and places, about the quality of the current electronic dance music experience.

On June 23 – enjoying the afterburn of a Rolling Stone cover story in which he called out everyone from Skrillex to David Guetta for dialing in their sets – Deadmau5 used a Tumblr post to piss on the importance of technical DJ-ing skills, saying that with the advent of Ableton and its automatic beat-matching capabilities, “we all hit play.” An editorial on super-blog Dancing Astronaut declared that “EDM” had officially “mainstreamed,” and decried the lack of new music in most superstar DJ’s sets: “What worries me is not that DJs are simply ‘pressing play,’ but that they’re pressing play on the same tracks in the same order night after night after night,” said writer Jacob Schulman. Meanwhile, Paris Hilton played her first official DJ gig– and apparently wasn’t even able to press play (a tech came onstage to do it).

Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal (of all places!) even chimed in, bemoaning the “dumbing down of electronic music,” and labeling crossover artists like David Guetta and Calvin Harris “cliché-riddled, white-bread house that don’t represent the best of the genre.” Then there’s the much-talked-about feud between veteran DJ Sneak and Swedish House Mafia (sample: “I do not respect DJ actors”); and icons like Mark Farina and Dennis Ferrer being asked to vacate superclub DJ booths for not playing recognizable music.

The bottomline: Artists are getting

Live Nation Buys Electronic Music Promoter

Thought it be  alittle while longer before big money got in the game? you're wrong. It's here and its not going away anytime soon.  Be prepared, after the fall artists will start to deviate and decide if they want to go mainstream or go underground.  Its gonna be messy and there are going to be all kinds of stories.  and you know what? EDMBoston will be here to share them all with you!
(New York Times) "Big money is flowing into electronic dance music. In the latest example of corporate interest in this once-ignored market, Live Nation Entertainment said on Tuesday that it had acquired Hard Events, a Los Angeles company that has put on popular festivals and concerts across North America.
Yet such investments are fueling fears that

Tech House Boom: El Mundo & Satori - Trumpet Tool

As fans look to move away from press and play dj's, we believe tech house Boom will become more and more popular.  The artists in this genre are able to be a lot more creative in a live setting with their subgenre because it allows for an open format.  For example a dj can mix together two loops, while adding in a separate bassline and a separate synth, and all of a sudden all 4 cdjs are going at once.

El mundo & Satori's Trumpet tool is an example of a cool tech house track that is a start to the tech house Boom.  It offers up the soul of house and combines the technicality of tech.  Check out the different layers in the track and let it move you!

Lessons in Love (Fareoh Remix) - Kaskade feat. Neon Trees

Fareoh is an up and coming talent that EDMBoston reported on for his track 2012 back in January.  He has lots of production promise and was rewarded with a slew of Kaskade's Freaks of Nature opener gigs.  Its a huge opportunity for this young artist and he sounds to have made the most of Freaks of Nature as most people in worcester enjoyed his set.

Fareoh's remix of Kaskade's track "lessons in love" transforms the song from a radio version into a stronger club type track.  The new drop Fareoh created has great hands in the air party vibe and even the build up, which we aren't crazy about, adds a deeper dimension.

Deadmau5 Rant "[EDM] Sinking Fast"

It has almost become common practice then when things get interesting in EDM, they get even more so when a Deadmau5 rant adds fuel to the fire.  We're not even sure why they are called "Deadmau5 rants" because Joel is basically right in all of his long winded diatribes.

In the newest deadmau5 rant, he complains "EDM is as commercially viable as coca cola" and "All im trying to do, is put on my life jacket and swim as far away from this shipwreck as fast as i can."

We can all see it around us.  This movement is flying at warp speed and if outsiders, relatively speaking, can see whats going on, just imagine what an industry insider such as deadmau5 knows.  Fasten your seatbelt, this ish is about to get bumpy.

Beatport Launches Beatport Mixes

The online DJ mix distribution game is about to undergo a major overhaul.  In the following article, you will read about beatport starting a new platform for artists to distribute their mixes legally on beatport mixes.  The question is how many artists are going to switch over to this platform and how much internet policing will force them too?  RIght now we are in the golden age of the free distribution of mixes.  Almost every artist and their mother are giving out free itunes podcasts or radio shows.  They lift the financial burden off fans and allow us to enjoy the music we love without having to hike to a show every night.

we hope the free game is able to keep going but we also want to see the artists be rewarded for their production skills.

Avicii Says he hasn't sold out in interview here:

In the interview, Avicii says he hasn't sold out.  Take a listen and see what he has to say.

He definitely has stuck to producing the same sound but EDMBostons asks why??  Armin van Buuren always says "don't be a prisoner of your own style" and we can't help but think Avicii is the definitive artist thats stuck. At this point it will be very challenging from him to switch out of his pop progressive sound and have a long term career.  Ash has set him up to follow the same trajectory of the hip-hop stars of yesteryear and its pretty sad.

Avicii is a talented producer and you have to give him credit for levels no matter how sick of it (and we're sick of it) you are.  But where is he going with it all besides commercial success?

How did Skrillex get LAME? ~Womplife.com

skrillex lame soldout

Awesome Article here that Becky Radolf wrote on the state of where Skrillex being lame came from.  She talks about how the scene has changed and largely those are the people that you now see going to skrillex shows.  Since sonny has become associated with all the newbs, it has def hit his street cred.

Read On:

Article Written by Becky Radolf of Womplife for Womplife
(Womplife)  "I’ll be the first to admit it: I still like Skrillex. In fact, I don’t really know when the point came when it suddenly wasn’t cool to like Skrillex anymore. It feels like a few months ago, back when he had remixed “Levels” in a non-shitty way (probably the first to do so), he was still at the pinnacle of his awesomeness. And then suddenly…he just tanked in popularity. Admittedly, this was a gradual decline for many long-time EDM fans. Now, if someone asks you what EDM artists you like, and you throw Skrillex into that mix, the other person will silently judge you, thinking, "Oh, Christ. They like Skrillex. They have no idea what they’re talking about.”
Yet, his music hasn’t really changed all that much, and he’s still the same person he was a few months ago. He’s still the shy, humble little man with the weirdo hairdo (now a trend-setter). He still cranks out the same distinctly Skrillexy music and he still clearly loves what he does. So why are we hating on him so much?
I think the problem arises when we look at

deadmau5 neff
Courtesy of Neff
(rollingstone) Deadmau5, Rolling Stone's current cover star, is an icon to the EDM set, with his propulsive productions and visually aggressive live shows leading the stateside dance revival. Of course, he also has a trademark look: his signature mouse helmet (the "Mau5head"), worn to all his shows and public appearances, is the most famous electronic prop since Daft Punk's Tony Gardner-designed L.E.D. Tron suits, which clearly inspired his transhumanist gear.
Now Deadmau5's notorious twist on the Disney staple has inspired a clothing collection. Rolling Stone can reveal exclusively that Neff Headwear, the activewear brand that has outfitted the DJ for two years, is partnering with the electronic superstar to release "Neffmau5," a collection of vibrant, co-branded shirts, hoodies and, yes, hats.
The eight-piece collection (four tees, one crewneck, one hoodie and two snapbacks) naturally center around the "Mau5head,"  resulting in a hybrid logo that plants mouse ears on Neff's "suckerface" image. Expect to see them pop up at raves near you this summer.
"It was easy to put ears on the Neff face for an instantly legit logo, right?" Deadmau5 tells Rolling Stone. "I love the street and snowboard scene. The people involved are the people I see at my shows, so it made sense to hook up with a cool company like Neff to work on a collaboration." Shaun Neff, the brand’s founder and CEO, calls the partnership "super exciting."
The Neffmau5 collection will launch nationally on July 15th and will be available online and at a range of retailers.

Swedish House Mafia BREAK UP?? TOUR TO BE LAST

Today we find on swedishhousemafia.com a breaking news story.  Swedish house mafia break up may be imminent.  As you can read above it says this will be their final tour.  It doesn't say they will break up, but is this the writing on the wall?  Earlier this year there were rumors that swedish house mafia breaking up.  Now we learn that this will be the final tour.

Some are saying this maybe a pr stunt to fill out their remaining shows.  However, with their extreme popularity its hard to imagine tour dates haven't had the majority of tickets sold.  Nevertheless, EMI is the management team behind Swedish hosue mafia and their corporate interest could be using this stunt to sell a mass tour in the fall like avicii is currently on.

We will continue to monitor the situation!

Working at Little Chef – though in hindsight I developed some pretty mean breakfast cooking skills.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
An actor
What’s the worst club you’ve been to?
That’s a tough one. I cant remember what most of them are called!
What are you obsessed with right now?
Ownership of a Segway has been an ongoing thing for the past year – I’m toying with the idea. But right now I’m drinking more than my fair share of hot chocolate.
And what do you hate right now?
People who dawdle and bumble around in public. Especially in supermarkets. I might buy a stun gun.

Last Ever EDC Las Vegas??

The Snob just ran a really fascinating article on Insomniac Events, Pasquale Rotella, and EDC as we know it.  It's a must read
Electric Daisy Carnival 2012, the crown jewel of American EDM massives, may have been the grand finale for Insomniac.
(EDMSnob) This year’s Electric Daisy Carnival may have been the last. With inner turmoil and outer pressure, Insomniac Events’ ability to put on large scale events may be damaged beyond repair. To understand why, we have to go back to the very roots of EDM, and see how the beauty that is EDC arose from those humble beginnings.
The American electronic dance music scene has a relatively short, yet tortured past. In the beginning, electronic dance music (EDM) was traditionally showcased at raves. Raves, in their purest and earliest form, were all-night dance parties held in remote and secret locations. Inherently countercultural, raves were initially met with the same mainstream disdain that all new forms of free expression are met with. In fact, the police backlash was so fierce that “[l]argely due to police crackdowns on these unlicensed and unregulated clandestine raves, the rave scene moved to large clubs in urban and suburban areas.” Soon, though, the controlled environments of club raves presented new problems. First, the police had a lot less power to shut down events at legitimate businesses, and second, the clubs that held these events w

HELLO SUMMER!

Deadmau5 Slams Press & Play Dj's

Electronic dance music superstar Deadmau5 graces the cover of Rolling Stone's Summer Special issue, on newsstands this Friday, June 22nd. The cover story follows the producer-DJ born Joel Zimmerman as he travels by chartered jet from London to festivals in Norway and Sweden. Always outspoken, Zimmerman offers some brutally frank opinions about his EDM peers, Madonna and more.
• Zimmerman slams EDM stars who show up to a live gig and press play. "David Guetta has two iPods and a mixer and he just plays tracks – like, 'Here's one with Akon, check it out!'," he says. "Even Skrillex [a friend of Zimmerman’s] isn't doing anything too technical. He has a laptop and a MIDI recorder, and he's just playing his shit ... People are, thank God, smartening up about who does what – but there’s still button-pushers getting paid half a million. And not to say I’m not a button-pusher. I’m just pushing a lot more buttons.”
• He's still angry at Madonna for her appearance at the Ultra Music Festival in March, where she asked the audience, "How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?” – a barely coded reference to Ecstasy. "You want to be 'hip' and 'cool' and 'funky grandma'?," says Zimmerman. "Fine. It's not my place to say you're irrelevant. If you're gonna come into my world, at least do it with a little more dignity. I understand she has millions more fans, and is way more successful than I'll ever be. But it's like talking about slavery at a fucking blues concert. It's inappropriate."
• Zimmerman routinely refuses to contribute to pop records, and he dismisses most dance music as formulaic – "Just 120 bpm with a fucking kick drum on every quarter note" – but he's been trying to get Dave Grohl to remix one of his own songs. "Because fuck dance music, you know?"

David Guetta: When Fame Takes Over

Article from ElectroJams
(Electrojams) As EDM has continued to explode through the consciousness of the American mainstream, there have been few who have matched the same reach and blockbuster appeal as French producer/DJ David Guetta. After releasing his third studio album Pop Life in June, nearly 5 years ago, the French producer has taken a much more pop-centric approach to his work, doing his best to appeal to the mainstream audiences around the globe. With that said, the EDM landscape has changed dramatically, and to be frank, not everyone is happy.
Guetta’s style has always been a blend of strong vocals over electro and French house influences, a style that has brought many hardcore EDM fans and ravers to his shows for years.  Now though, Guetta has dropped his once signature style and recurring vocalists for a much glossier and anthemic style that mashes with hip-hop’s latest flavor of the week (I’m looking at you, Nicki Minaj).
Guetta has ordained the unholy marriage of hip-hop and EDM.
We all saw it coming, and we knew this day would come.  It was inevitable.  Not everyone is happy though.  Fans around the world will bash Guetta as if it is their job. By the bar at Laidback Luke’s Super You & Me, it was easy to hear your neighborhood lax-pinnie-wearing bro say things like “Guetta is shit”, or how the Frenchman had “ruined EDM”. Although this is one person’s opinion (and actually supported by hundreds of thousands; some for more defined reasons than others), it proves to show just how polarizing a figure like Guetta really is.
Is that really how people feel?
I could surely understand the gripes of vocalist Chris Willis (featured to the right, looking a little lonely?), the once-longtime collaborator of Guetta who has since been replaced by the likes of Chris Brown and Lil’ Wayne.
But for many fans, they refuse to see Guetta as anything but a sell-out.  I can understand and even sympathize with this sentiment, but when you look at what he has done for EDM as a whole, it’s really hard to accept that he’s all bad or even bad at all.
Every genre of music, every form of art, has two sides to it. On the first side, you have the purely artistic, truly creative expressions, and on the other, you have the mainstream, commercialized and monetized side.  Guetta obviously is on the latter half, but that side would not exist without the other. Without David Guetta’s 2009 collaborations with Akon and the Black Eyed Peas, many current hardcore fans would have never even listened to or bothered to know what EDM stands for. At the same time though, it is the overly-commercialized works of Guetta that make the hardcore raver really appreciate those underground nights, those warehouse raves (and I assure you, they still exist!), where the true artistic expression of a real DJ (like you know, actually beatmatches and mixes records?!) and the PLUR life reign supreme.
Additionally, and this is undeniable, EDM would not be where it is without David Guetta.  Through his huge collaborations with pop/dance/comedy (right?!) act LMFAO and rapper Kid Cudi and the like, he has gradually injected his electro basslines and thumping beats into Top 40 radio across the nation. His sound has led the way for an EDM takeover. You can find EDM at all the major club spots in major cities, nearly every night of the week. Because of Guetta, producers who make “computer music” or tracks that go “unts unts unts,” are now able to get club residencies and paid gigs easier than ever.  Bigger names are now even embarking on tours, some around the world.  Coachella and Lollapolooza, once predominantly indie and rock festivals respectively have had their fair share of EDM acts grace their tents, bringing in the likes of Avicii (below with his massive and ridiculous stage setup) and Bassnectar.
Taking it one step further, the EDM music scene has become a billion-dollar industry.  Surely this means that more pop and more accessible MTV tunes will be produced, but this is part of the natural evolution at this point.  It also means that millions of people long after our time, will know of this era.  Millions of people now, can work to support and produce the music we hold near and dear to our hearts.
The work of Guetta and other polarizing figures such as Skrillex and Deadmau5 have become a divisive force amongst ravers everywhere.  Self-segregated factions of the nasty and filthy wobble of “brostep” or the orchestral, lush synth pads of trance fans now attack each other based on their musical interests.  This is something that has long been different in the dance music scene.  Rather than be split up by your favorite DJ, people united in PLUR fashion.  You can save all the banners, commercial ventures and $400 ticket festivals, people came for the music.  Today, that is not so easily said.
Attending Steez Promo’s annual Starscape Festival, the vibe is noticeably different than that of a NYC one-off Laidback Luke show.  At Starscape, kandi is not just an accessory but a means for meeting new people, trading and creating new experiences.  At Pacha, it’s almost frowned upon to be wearing any sort of kandi.  To put it simply, it’s rave versus party.  To be sure, it is entirely possible to enjoy both, but the two don’t mix well.  This is where the true EDM fans, the kandi kids, the old-school house heads who have hated on Guetta often feel slighted. As EDM has grown, they feel that they have been left behind, and have not been able to grow with the music as they have in the past.  What once offered an escape from the Top 40 charts, is now littered everywhere. It’s no longer our little secret.  People who once derived their identity from being a raver are now being forced to be mixed in with the “others.”
“If you abandon a band as soon as other people like them, then you don’t love music for the right reasons. You like music for identity.” – Jack White
I can understand the fear, the feeling of loss. What once felt uniquely yours no longer does.  If you truly love the music, and are really about the music, then you can appreciate what Guetta has done for our scene. Music is meant to connect people, not divide. Rather than rag on others for their taste in music, we can now dance together at our local clubs, regional massive and national festivals.
And for those people who once loved Guetta beats but now denounce him, I have to question just how much of a music lover you are. Do you love the music or the identity you get from listening to it?  (We don’t want you. Thanks.)
