With a guest list boasting around 250,000 music lovers for the past two years, news has arisen from Goldenvoice President Paul Tollett threatening to move his business elsewhere, saying that next year will potentially be the last in Indio. Apparently DesertSun, the news source for Palm Springs, got a hold of some texts between Goldenvoice’s VP Skip Paige and an Indio Official regarding moving out of the city, for good.
“PAIGE: Fyi, you know were moving right? All this is a game. Why in the world would we stay where we are not wanted. LQ doesn’t want us, Indio wants to take all our profits. Its a joke. You have no idea the battles we have had to fight and how much money we have lost on that show. You have no idea what its like to risk everything you own on your business. We all lost our homes, most of us lost our marriages all over Coachella. Now you think you can just come and take our profit. Its not going to happen.” For more dialogue, go HERE
Tax initiatives proposed by the City Council to make up for furloughs and cuts in municipal departments will put an extra cost anywhere from $4 million to $6 million on the music festival. With already high prices, it seemed absurd to even consider adding some more bills onto festival goer tickets. Polo Club and Goldenvoice both agree they would prefer building a new venue elsewhere opposed to dealing with this tax proposal.
Obviously Coachella and Stagecoach generate millions of dollars for the city just on ticket fees and transient tax, and another $9 million just for food and beverages sold during Coachella. An angry Tollett says,”Forget legal, is that even fair? To go and pick one thing and say the shows that are happening at Empire are going to solve the problem because (Indio) fired police chiefs, mayor and city managers and are paying them forever.”
Maybe the heat is finally getting too hot over in Southern California. Either way, Goldenvoice suggests this might impede on the continuation of Coachella in 2014, and make people wait until 2015 for another festival.

The proposed tax hike on coachella has been renounced by Councilman Sam Torres. According to NBC Los Angeles stating: “I cannot in good conscience allow this to happen no matter how dire the city’s circumstance,” Torres said in a press released posted at 4 p.m. “My sincere hope is that we can now move past this episode and I personally look forward to working to enhance relationships.”
Breathe easy as your day continues knowing that Coachella isn't going anywhere. But honestly, did anyone think a group of politicians would let a money maker like coachella leave their district? Their constituents would vote them out in a second for losing that kind of business.
In 2013 the festival looks to attact 158,000 people and is going to take place April 12-14 and the 19-21st.
