This year, though, is a big one for the young EDM star. Since last fall, rumors have been flying about his collaboration with Lady Gaga on her upcoming Art Pop album. The album doesn’t have a release date yet, but Gaga reportedly has one goal - “to make history.”
As EDM as a genre has grown, more and more pop stars have turned to the beats of DJs to liven up their songs. This relationship is proving beneficial to both genres; EDM artists reach a wider audience while pop artists freshen stale, overused beats and get the opportunity to feed off the recent hype of EDM.
But will the collaborations go too far, to the point where the two genres are indistinguishable? Certainly, some fans of EDM have the fear of the genre going too mainstream, but pop music is called ‘popular’ music for a reason. Pop artists take the crowd pleasing style of the moment and integrate it into their top 40 hits, and right now that style is EDM. The two genres are inherently different, and will stay that way, so the mutual benefits of working together to create great music isn’t something that the hardcore EDM fan should be worried about in the long run.
Look again at Zedd, for example! His Clarity album was released to rave reviews, as was the song he produced with Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj, "Beauty and the Beat".
