Griz at the Middle East: Show Review

Last Saturday night, Griz trucked up to Boston, and brought his winter tour to the wild Middle East Club in Cambridge.  The small basement was packed from the stage to the back of the club with passionate fans dying to hear some funky sax and hard hitting beats.  Before Griz took the stage and blew the crowd away, Manic Focus did an amazing job getting everybody hyped up and ready to go.  By the time Griz strolled to the mic, fans had to squeeze by just to get around as the sold out show screamed for Grant (Griz.)  Instantly, the crowd erupted in pleasing cheers as he dropped his brand new song “Gettin Live” and broke out the funky saxophone sounds, setting the mood for the show.

For the first half of his set, Griz stuck to mostly his original songs, filling the room with saxophone as the wild crowd fell in love with Griz’s unique sound.  He played his well known songs such as "Digital Liberation is Mad Freedom", "Fall In Love Too Fast", and "Mr. B" pleasing, all who attended. What makes Griz so unique if his ability to blend hard hitting beats with his melodic saxophone smoothly, giving the show a unusual and original feel.  It was clear that Griz was just onstage having a blast while he jammed out on the sax.

About halfway through the show, Griz cut the music and got the crowd pumped up by showing his love for the Boston fans, before dropping an always classic “Tequila.”  The crowd screamed along with a grin from ear to ear before Grant mixed it into a crazy dubstep drop, instantly changing the vibe in the small venue, and energy levels went off the charts.

From that point on, Griz played more of a DJ set while he threw in his own songs here and there.  He got the crowd wild as he dropped well known bangers by Skrillex, Knife Party,  and even mixing in some hip-hop such as "Mercy" by Kanye West.  The crowd was loving it as the temperature in the room grew to an almost unbearable heat.  Girls climbed up on shoulders and some fans even jumped up onto the stage before being tossed off by security.

Soon after, Griz said his goodbye’s and got off stage, but it was short lived.  He stormed back to the mic with his sax in hand and played a good twenty minute long encore before sharing his final love and thoughts with the Boston crowd.

Overall, it was an amazing show with great energy.  However, I do feel that the Middle East’s sound system was a little off, causing some of the bass to seem too loud and distorted, but it didn't matter to Griz and he rocked the Boston crowd until early morning.  Big shout out and thanks to the Middle East Club for hosting Griz and providing EDM Boston with the press passes.  If you haven't had a chance to see Griz live yet, get tickets soon.  You wont be disappointed by his funky sax, and hard hitting bass beats.
