Kaskade Freaks of Nature Review

Kaskade, aka Ryan Radon, has been on a tear in 2012.  Shortly after releasing his hit album “Fire and Ice”, he has been thrust into the EDM limelight via the surge in popularity of his music and the genre in general.  As a result, his tour stops have increased in size and craziness.  Due to his heightened popularity and Fire and Ice’s success, his team decided to embark on a massive summer tour dubbed the “Freaks of Nature Tour”.   The Freaks of Nature Tour is one of the three largest tours, the others being Avicii’s “Le7els” and Afrojack’s Jacked tour, this summer.   Massachusetts was fortunate enough to draw a date on Ryan’s massive tour schedule in Worcester, MA at the DCU center.

It was a curious choice for Ryan to be going to Worcester because

he clearly could have drawn a bigger crowd if he played in a Boston venue.  However, the venue choice wasn’t going to impact Freaks of Nature.  That’s because all our favorite “Freaks” were coming out to party with Kaskade and the most committed drove out.

Immediately when EDMBoston arrived on scene we were feeling the PLUR.  To reciprocate, we brought plenty of EDMBoston stickers to hand out and chatted with fans.  One of our favorite parts about the EDM community is everyone’s willingness to talk about the music and different shows they’ve attended.  There was no shortage of that at Kaskade’s Worcester Show.  Being fresh off Avicii, we couldn’t wait to catch up with fellow househeads about their experience and their expectations of Kaskade show.  After a half hour or so out front we went into the venue.

Unfortunately, EDMBoston wasn’t able to make it out to the show in time to see the opener, Fareoh and we only caught a portion of Alvin Risk.  Despite this, we could feel that the openers were successful in getting the crowd revved up and ready to go for the headline act.

Kaskade kicked off his show in dramatic action.  Although he had the cliché sheet, covering the stage, that we’ve seen at oh so many shows.  Kaskade’s visual team did it justice with auditory and visual drama.  White spotlights highlighted the silhouette of giant butterfly while countdown piano chords built tension and drama.  It all culminated in a drop of the bass and darkness.  The audience was then greeted with deep blue aura lights and the mind tingling vocals of Mindy Gledhill.  “Eyes” lyrics cast a trance over the crowd.  Was the song choice predictable, based on his prior performances during the Freaks of Nature tour? YES.  Did it capture and emotionally move the crowd into “the zone”? YES.  For that reasons it was a powerful opener, which we loved!

Before the beat could drop on eyes, Kaskade greeted the audience “Alright Massachusetts, what’s happening. Cmon guys!”  In that moment Ryan raised the crowd’s energy to another level that would carry throughout the night.

During the set, Kaskade worked in and out of originals off his album Fire & Ice and laced them with custom mash-ups he had made for the night and a smattering of hit tracks from other artists.  The energy surrounding Ryan’s progressive sound in Worcester was high, struck a chord, and unique.

The Freaks of Nature tour sported a traditional massive LCD screen behind the DJ booth.  In front of the screen, Ryan stood atop a Seven foot tall dj booth that had a LCD screen across the front.  The abstract visuals displayed during the night were entertaining and paired well with the tracks.  Although they weren’t anything to write home about, they worked well for the 3,000-4,000 people in attendance.  Not to mention the moving spotlights and spread lasers complemented the visuals to flood the stage, and set the room with the perfect atmosphere to enjoy an EDM show.

One of the really special parts of the night was when Kaskade dropped a brand new track on us.  EDMBoston was able to capture it live on film and you can see it below.  The drop was raw and had the crowd in Kaskade’s palm, which must have felt special to an artist previewing his track for the first time.  The vocal used in the track also was encapsulating.

Freaks of Nature didn’t stop there in delivering something special to the viewers.  The production was also interactive with the audience.  During “It’s you, its Hertz” two dozen bouncing balls, 2 feet in diameter each, descended down on the heads of the crowd from the ceiling.  The balls proceeded to bounce around during the track and provided a nice 3rd element to the show.

While Kaskade was busy entertaining the hell out of the crowd with a fantastic music selection, he did take brief moments to enjoy the tunes as well.  On different occasions you could catch the DJ jumping up and down to a beat drop, singing a vocal, or a pulsing fist pump.  However, at no point did Kaskade get distracted in having too much fun being a visual entertainer.  The proof was in his DJ set and the way the dance floor stayed packed and jumping.

Overall EDMBoston really enjoyed the show.  Not only was the audience a friendly one with lots of PLUR in the building, but Kaskade put on a great performance that injected life into a progressive house sound that has fallen flat in the mainstream.
