The global electronic dance music community has gathered to form an advocacy and lobbying body, entitled the Association for Electronic Music (AFEM), details for which were announced today at MIDEM.

AFEM is a membership-driven body that will pool players from across the dance-music field, with the collective ambition to strengthen and further their genre.

At its inception, the new not-for profit trade association will be led by London-based Ben Turner, a partner in the International Music Summit, and Washington-based entertainment industry biz attorney Kurosh Nasseri.

Sony Makes Deal for Electronic Dance Music

ultra records sony music
(NY Times) In the latest sign of the music industry’s gold rush over electronic dance music, Sony Music has struck a deal with a leading independent dance label, Ultra Music. The arrangement calls for the labels to share acts, and gives one of Sony’s divisions distribution rights to Ultra’s catalog in North America, which includes top D.J.’s like Deadmau5, Steve Aoki, Calvin Harris and Benny Benassi.

As part of the deal, announced on Wednesday, Sony will make an unspecific investment in Ultra, and Patrick Moxey, Ultra’s president, will be named Sony’s president for electronic music, reporting to Doug Morris, the chief executive of Sony’s music division.

The arrangement raises Ultra’s profile considerably, and will give it access to some of Sony’s vast resources: the label, for example, will be able to use Sony artists for its popular compilation albums, like “Ultra Weekend” and “Ultra Dubstep.”

Ultra, which has become a substantial dance-music empire, including an artist-management arm, will also help promote Sony acts. With the distribution arrangement — through Sony’s Red division, which distributes recordings from many independent labels — sales of Ultra albums will also contribute to Sony’s market share, a source of constant competition between Sony and its biggest rival, the Universal Music Group.

Michael Phelps Disses Cambrige Pizza

(Bostoninno) In the water, Michael Phelps has spent his time earning 18 Olympic gold medals. Out of the water, he spends his time dissing Boston.

The athlete was in town over the weekend, taking to Twitter to share his Boston experience. He sent out the following tweet at 3:24 a.m. on Sunday morning:
Love Boston…. Amazing… @julepbar was awesome… But one thing that was upsetting was we tried to order pizza from @pizzaring said they said it takes over an hour to get a pie when they’re down the street… Seems unreal… Goodnight tweeps !! Go ravens!!!
Thanks for the most backhanded compliment ever, Phelps. The athlete spent 38 of the 44 words in the tweet dissing Boston. Sure, he loved Julep Bar. But he then went over Twitter’s 140 character limit to complain about our “unreal” late night pizza situation. And, the icing on the cake, decided to throw in his support for the Ravens just hours before the AFC Championship game.

Here’s the thing. You are Michael Phelps. You are one of the world’s most celebrated Olympians. Why are you calling pizza places at 3 a.m. and not announcing yourself?

At your best, you’ve been known to consume 12,000 calories a day. Brands like Subway are chomping at the bit to get you on board. You could probably have any food your heart desires. Yet, you still decided to call some Cambridge pizza place (with crappy Yelp reviews, might I add) when you were hungry.

Pizza Ring’s manager confirmed our suspicions that flaunting his celebrity would have gotten him whatever he wanted. The manager told the Boston Globe that he had no idea Phelps was on the other line, and had he known, “He would have had royal service.”

We’ve all heard of the munchies, Phelps. Use your status to cure them.

Eric Prydz Announces 'Black Dice'

Forget what you thought you knew about Las Vegas nightlife, Eric Prydz ‘Black Dice’ residency, his first ever in the US, at Wynn Las Vegas is set to usher in an evolution in Sin City’s recent love affair with dance music.

As EDM fervor has swept America, many have lost sight of what the role of a DJ in clubland is all about, settling for pre-prepared playlists of what has become top 40 music. ‘Black Dice’ offers a new paradigm for Las Vegas, paired back production with black-out lighting, fog machines and lasers, musical spontaneity beyond sure-fire club hits; it’s about immersion, and surrendering oneself to a DJs journey.
There is no more capable captain for this journey than Eric Prydz. While he maybe a chart-topping, Grammy nominated producer and a stadium-filling DJ, its clear that his love for the underground and the undiscovered is what drives him. From anthemic hands-in-the-air house as Eric Prydz, to stripped back, dark European techno under his Cirez D alias, Prydz is not one to play safe.

Fortunately you won't have to travel to Vegas to experience Prydz. Get your Eric Prydz Boston Tickets

3 Men Killed By Deadly Batch of Ecstasy

(mixmag) "It's being reported that three men have died after taking what police think is a deadly batch of ecstasy.

They were admitted to hospitals in Greater Manchester and Liverpool between Sunday and Monday but died while receiving treatment.

Although post mortem results are yet to be delivered, police have issued a statement warning people of about potentially killer pills currently in circulation.

The pills are said to be heart shaped and come in purple, yellow, green and blue colours.

Det Chief Insp Howard Millington from Greater Manchester Police said: “Our main concern is that there may be a contaminated quantity of illegal drugs and if this goes unchecked it could result in further deaths.

"If you are suffering adverse effects after taking one of these tablets I would advise you to go to hospital for a check up."

It's also being reported that police are aware of other people that have been hospitalized over the weekend and have launched an investigation."

Middle East has New Booking Agent: Kevin Hoskins

(The Phoenix) There are more booking agent changes in the live music scene over in Central Square.

Earlier this week we reported on T.T. The Bear’s Place bringing in a local talent buyer to round out its daily calendar, and today neighboring club the Middle Eastwent a step further, replacing Shred with a familiar face: its former booking agentKEVIN HOSKINS, who ran booking at the Cambridge club from 2004 to 2010 and has had a role in the venue since 2002.

“We’re just looking to expand the calendar and tap into some of the resources we now have with Kevin’s relationships with bands,” Middle East general manager Clay Fernald tells the Phoenix. “Shred is still welcome to do shows here. There are a lot of awesome booking agents in town and this is our team.”

Fernald also notes there will be no other personnel charges at the Central Square live music complex. Hoskins will be booking the Mid East’s downstairs room, a destination for touring acts and bigger-name Boston bands with a 575-person capacity, as well as the occasional upstairs show. Hoskins begins his role immediately, Fernald says.

"We're taking a month to give it a paint job and clean it up a little bit, then start booking," Hoskins says when reached by phone this afternoon. "The Middle East has been my home away from home for most of the past decade, and there's such a deep history in the downstairs room and the entire complex, in supporting local music and touring bands that have come through. The mission is pretty simple: book good shows and people will come see them."

After six years at the Middle East, Hoskins left the club in 2010 to relocate to Austin, Texas, and handle booking at Emo’s. He was recently a part of the Allston-based CQ Presents team, but did not follow Carl Lavin and Josh Smith when the pair joined Bowery Boston late last year.

Lately, Hoskins has been booking independent shows around Boston under the name Rogue Presents, including events at Radio and Precinct in Somerville, and Cambridge's Middlesex Lounge and the Middle East. He had been working with the Sater brothers, who own the Middle East, in crafting booking policies for another of the the Saters' venues, the Armory in Somerville, when discussions turned to him re-joining the Middle East team.

"I've always said if this is my favorite place to see a show, others would as well," Hoskins says.

You Sold Out ~Kaskade

sold out

If there’s a formula to selling out, I think every band in the world would be doing it. The fact that you write good songs and you sell too many of them, if everybody in the world knew how to do that they’d do it. It’s not something we chose to do.
—Mike Dirnt, Greenday
Every musician or artist who has dared to put their work into the fire-pit of public consumption risks being criticized, but hopes for better. Those who end up having to work for success, to climb hand-over-fist upwards will inevitably leave a few fans behind. Fans who feel betrayed because the journey doesn’t go the way they would have hoped, or because it goes on tangents to places that are different from where they started. That’s progression, though. Art doesn’t always move in a straight line, and progression by definition means change. It’s how we ebb and flow as humans, it’s the way we live in our relationships. It’s the cadence of being alive.

Since music builds a hugely intimate relationship between the creator and their audience, the deviation from a sound, a feeling, or a genre sometimes feels like a betrayal. And if you’re looking for a knife-cut to the gut, the go-to phrase to callout a formerly favored artist is “sellout”. The implication that a person is so low-brow as to trade their integrity for some scratch is pretty vitriolic. And insults feel good to throw around if you’ve been betrayed, so why not?

I’d argue that there’s no such thing as a sellout. That’s why not.

Let’s define what we’re talking about here. A sellout is thought of as a...

Tomorrowland USA To Be Reality!?!

tomorrowland usa

Speculation has just rolled in from the Netherlands that Tomorrowlands has its eyes set on expansion.  We have not confirmed this with our sources, but this would certainly add a nice new flavor to the summer festival scene in the states! Tomorrowland USA could be coming a lot sooner then we think!

(Demorgan.be) The Belgian dance festival Tomorrowland has a new ambition. The organizers Manu and Michael Beers want on every continent a version of their wildly popular festival setting. The brothers are currently looking for unique locations for their festival. This writes the newspaper Het Nieuwsblad.

In an interview in the weekend edition of business newspaper The time say the brothers Beers that they "weekly actual questions from around the world get to the festival to go elsewhere copying from rich Russians and Indians, to the top of the promoters and investors from Australia, the United States and South America. We're going to do it, but on our terms, and only in places where we feel at home. " Because the brothers the strings of the festival held to account, are within their company ID & T already ten new workers adopted. "It is a huge challenge." A second festival, in Belgium at its ninth edition, provides annually to 180,000 visitors. A number of tickets were only sold in Belgium. Last year was the demand for tickets from abroad so large that 2 million people were ready to their computer at the start of the presale. The festival had no more than a second to the remaining 100,000 tickets for non-nationals to sell. festival in recent years, showered with international awards. Thus Tomorrowland last week's best big festival in Europe crowned. But to sell the brothers think not."Why should we sell? It's our passion."

Top 3 Things to See at Infected Mushroom

Tonight marks the coming of Infected Mushroom and their experimental future sound.  The group has wooed fans for the last 15 years in the electronic genre.  They have been revolutionary in their sound and performances of the course of that time.  Below are the Top 3 Things to See at Infected Mushroom tonight:

3. SideStep

The brainchild of Infected Mushroom, and their experimental foray into playing with Dubstep, netted the group a self titled sub-genre called “Side-step”.  Their 2012 album, Army of Mushrooms highlights this new sound which Amit has said resonates with the newer generation.

2. Stage Set up

Months ago we premiered the teaser video below, which seemed to have been the official kick off of the LCD/visual arms war that was waged throughout 2012. Well the orbs have finally descended on Boston and it’s time for Beantown to see if this is the game changer that it’s been chalked up to be.

1. Mixing Equipement

Infected Mushroom hasn’t been shy when it comes to progressing their live production over the last 15 years. Starting out as original vinyl DJ performers, they quickly transitioned into playing as a full instrumental band. In fact they at one point had Israel’s top guitarist at shows. In 2012 Infected Mushroom, revolutionized their live performance and pushed the envelope of what was being done at a live electronic event. They are now using a digital glass controller that hook into Abelton to mix music and run their effects live. Below Erez talks about Emulator and how it has revolutionized the game:

The tattoo artist/reality TV star tweeted a photo on Monday of fiance Deadmau5 (real name: Joel Zimmerman) sitting in a brand-new car, with the caption, "I can't think of anyone who deserves this more than Joel! #happybirthday #imsoscared."

According to Us Weekly, the car is a Porsche 911 Carrera S worth $100,000. Deadmau5 seemed pleased with the gift -- Von D later tweeted, "Seriously never seen @deadmau5 so stoked! #ifyouaintfirstyourlast" and a photo of Deadmau5 in the driver's seat, while Deadmau5 tweeted, "I don't think I can even take this thing off 'sport mode plus' holy f***."

Nicole Moudaber 'Techno Queen' To Hit Hub

nicole moudaber boston 2013
When the legendary Carl Cox hand picks you to join him in Ibiza at his night at Space, you know things are going well in you career. Nicole Moudaber has been blessed with such attention as she has risen threw the ranks of the techno community.  In addition to performing with Cox, he also selected Nicole to release her inagural release for Intec Digital in 2011.

Back in September Nicole Moudaber traveled to Boston to play in Bijou's intimate night club.  Unfortunately we were unable to make the show but, we couldn't think of a better pairing for pounding techno beats then Bijou's tight, hard knocking sound system, other then Rise.

That being said, Nicole has been hard at work in the studio since her visit to Boston.  She will be kicking off the New Year by releasing two new tracks.

nicole moudaber 2013 boston
First up is the title track "Roar," on which Nicole’s signature hard-hitting drums remain constant and commanding throughout. On top of this Nicole gradually adds other elements, a shimmering melody, brooding synths and an echoing vocal. All these elements build the atmosphere and tension in the track to a boiling point about six minutes in, upon which it breaks back down into it’s percussive groove - definitely one for peak-time dancefloors.

Next up on a funkier techno tip is "Brooklyn Hangover." While the track is again centred on tightly-programmed tribal drums, the overall vibe is much more playful as melodic stabs are given a prominent position, resulting in an infectious and engrossing techno cut.

The ‘Roar EP’ once again demonstrates Nicole’s considerable talents and shows why she is considered one of the leading producers on the scene. It is sure to strengthen her already solid foundations for what is set to be a landmark year for a rising star.

The 'Roar' EP will be available January 28 on Intec Digital.

In addition to the release of the two tracks Nicole will be doing a tour that will feature a stop in Boston on January 25 (yay friday!) at Bijou!

5 Biggest Things Evolution 101.7FM Radio Will Do To Boston

Evolution 101.7 Boston

By Max:

Evolution 101.7 FM is disrupting the Boston EDM FM radio community/market, as Clear Channel media launches one of their riskiest plans to date in our community. As we all know in the EDMBoston community, EDM has made quite the ruckus over the last two years in the mainstream. After such commercial success and viability in tv commercials, comes Clear Channel with an EDM station in the Boston radio market. Whether it's good or bad is entirely another debate, albeit something big is going to happen. That got us thinking.

What are the possibilities for this radio station and what does it mean for the Boston area? Below are our 5 biggest things 101.7 Radio will do to Boston.

1. Enlarged Music Festival

Having a clear channel radio station in town, testing a brand new market means many things for Bostonians. Among them are new methods of marketing, and a more aggressive effort on behalf of the station to spread its name to household status. That means we believe some sort of music festival will come about in the Boston market sponsored by Evolution radio. Clear channel has taken the risk to tap into the electronic market and while there maybe some money to be made from local and national advertisers trying to reach the EDM market, the money still lies within live events. That being said, we can easily see Evolution radio getting involved in a Music Festival or mega club event near the bay state.

The alternative is the radio station will feed into last years iHeart Radio Festival, to make it larger. Deadmau5 and Swedish House Mafia, all formative bookings, will no longer be the only ones at this festival as a side stage would be added if Clear Channel desides not to go the dedicated EDM festival route.

Deadmau5 Goes Through Xray Machine at Airport

By Max:

Joel Zimmerman, aka Deadmau5 can't seem to keep himself off the grid for any longer then a day it appears.  Some could argue that he is also one of the most connected musicians with his fan base in any genre.  He hosts countless live streams and is more then interactive when it comes to facebook, twitter, and soundcloud.

In the Mau5' latest escapades  the airport plays host to his latest fun.  In the youtube video below, you can see Deadmau5 x-raying himself through the conveyor belt TSA machine.  My question is, how did TSA not freak out at Deadmau5?  A media Mogul such as myself gets dirty looks if i sneeze in line never mind climb on to the X-ray machines belt and try to scan my whole body.  It's Deadmau5 world and we're all living in it.

EDM Is Growing Up

By Tommie Sunshine

(Huffington Post) I've been putting off my first "proper" piece for Huffington Post for six months now. People have been in my ear the whole time egging me on to speak my mind and share my thoughts with the masses, far beyond my Twitter followers & Facebook likers. That time is upon us; 2013 is the year of the Snake and although I don't know exactly what that means, I do know it's going to be an amazing year for EDM and the emerging culture around it.

We are four days into a new year and already so much has transpired. Zedd performed "Clarity" on The Late Show With David Letterman with Foxes & Alvin Risk, accompanied by a sit-down string section; Tiesto left his long-time management company for a much bigger one; and Skrillex released some proper listening music that pays tribute to his idols, Burial & Aphex Twin. Avicii has invited the world to help him write and produce his next track; Armin van Buuren announced that his 'A State Of Trance' 600th show will broadcast from Madison Square Garden; Diplo announced he's playing four shows in one night in four different cities and MTV has turned the hashtag #EDMCASTING into everyone's conceivable worst nightmare.

We are at the tipping point. This is it. This is what I've been working at for 20 years of my life now. The moment when this music becomes both a mainstream musical explosion and a cultural phenomenon simultaneously. If that isn't something that causes growing pains, I don't know what is. Some people who live for this music are turned off by it rising into the mainstream, but the ones who are lifers and truly love it will find their micro-scene to disappear into, while EDM takes over the world. This is a sad fact because we would love to have those people at EDC & Ultra, as they could show the younger kids the way into feeling this properly and experiencing it on a much deeper level. This is needed and I hope happens more frequently. I implore you to...
