Above & Beyond Keep Their Eye On The Basics As Their Audience Continues To Grow

(huffington post) A year ago, nearly every music website and magazine was publishing trend pieces tracking the explosion of electronic dance music in America. Fast-forward to the present, and nearly every general interest magazine and website is publishing similar stories, with the added clarity of hindsight.
But for Above & Beyond, a trance DJ and production trio known for melodic compositions and a deeply personal connection with their fans, none of this is news. Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness, and Paavo Siljamäki have been creating dance music for over a decade, releasing three studio albums, two remix albums and countless compilations and singles along the way. The cumulative affect: a devoted following that numbers in the millions.
Festival-goers and office-earbud ravers alike are familiar with the group, whose Trance Around the World radio show draws tens of millions of listeners each week. The trio is coming to New York this Labor Day weekend for two sets at Electric Zoo, where they'll headline both their own Group Therapy Stage (following acts like Mat Zo and Ferry Corsten) on Friday and the main stage on Saturday.
HuffPost Entertainment caught up with Grant and Siljamäki in two separate interviews that have been edited together below. Among the topics: how EDM can get smart again (Grant says it has been "dumbed down"), why trance doesn't suffer from the same problems as pop house and dubstep and whether pop DJs' days are numbered.
In what ways have you seen your fan base grow over the past few years? Do you feel as though trance -- which is in some ways the world's most popular genre of music -- is growing at the same pace as, say, pop house?
Paavo Siljamäki (PS): Pop house and dub house have taken the place of...

Axwell & Ingrosso MAD at Hardwell

(Stoneyroads)  You know the deal, throw around a few ‘free’ tracks and score some Facebook ‘likes’, pretty much the norm’ for todays web 2.0 producers.

The only hitch? When they’re bootlegs of Swedish House Mafia doofi (a collection of doofus’) Axwell and Ingrosso.
It was Dutch progressive DJ Hardwell that made the mistake of releasing a ‘trilogy’ of bootlegs reaching all the way back to 2010 that set the big shot personalities into action attacking him on Twitter.

You’d think they’d be some humbleness when it comes to other globally recognised producers specifically choosing your tracks to remix/edit/bootleg but instead both Axwell and Ingrosso graded Hardwells actions as “the lowest i’ve seen”.
This comes from DJs accused of playing mix CDs instead of performing live and collectively having over 3 million likes on Facebook.

Eric Prydz also jumped on the bandwagon jokingly adding his 2c “If you ‘like’ my Facebook Fan Page @Axwell & @Sebingrosso will come play for free in your living room”

The whole thing is a bit of a beat up and I get where the guys are coming from but the maturity shown from who could be considered professionals is a bit embarrassing. It’s not as if he made the bootlegs recently to leverage the popularity of SHM, some were created all the way back in 2010.

It was good to see Hardwell bounce back and take the pack offline and also offer up some positive wisdom.. “It’s all about the love for music, that’s the only thing that matters”

Maybe it wasn’t such a bad thing Swedish House (Thug) Mafia broke up?

Zoo Approaches; Animals are Stirring

(Examiner) When the sun rises on Friday, it will shine upon the festival grounds of Randall’s Island, New York – a little island in the East River that has played host to Cirque Du Soleil, Governors Ball, Dave Matthews Band and other summer arts festivals and concert series. Recently though – it has become globally known as the venue of the one of the nation’s most popular electronic music festivals – Electric Zoo.

Since its debut on Labor Day weekend of 2009, Electric Zoo (a Made Event production) has become New York City’s premier ElectronicMusic Festival, and an EDM Mecca for thousands. Zoo serves as the finale to a summer festival season that includes Coachella, Lollapalooza and, of course, Ultra Music Festival.

People travel cross-country to experience the three-day event. They are treated to a dream-like collection of the world’s most talented artists across a number of sub-genres including, but not limited to, house music, dubstep, and trance.

In 2010 – Zoo catered to a...

10 Best DJ Booths in EDM

The Miami New Times composed a list of the 10 Best DJ Booths in EDM. However, I'm not sure that we agree with it. Two glaring mistakes from the chart are that it's remiss of Amon Tobin and Pretty Lights.  Who gets bumped off below is to be determined...after electric zoo.
(Miami New Times) Ask any raver in the world and they'll tell you all about how "I'm totally in it for the music, bro."

But contrary to that theory, next-level, mind-blowing visuals are an increasingly important aspect of the electronic dance music scene.

Some of the best and most beloved DJs from all genres are throwing millions of dollars into their arena-sized LED displays. Mostly because DJs are overpaid. But also because all these music-loving kids are addicted to shiny things.

Now whose stage-game reigns supreme? Well, that should be obvious. But why don't you get that glow stick out of our face and check out Crossfade's list of the ten best DJ booths in EDM.

10. Midnight Conspiracy
This dark Chicago duo plays the heaviest in electro and dubstep. For their most recent tour, they pumped thousands of dollars into a custom 15-foot Illuminati pyramid called "The Eye." This shit shoots lasers like death rays and oscillates colors while...

Skrillex & Damian Marley - Make It Bun Dem (Brodinski Remix)

Make It Bun Dem After Hours EP

By Mike B of Butlertron

The Make It Bun Dem After Hours EP delivers six quality remixes of the Skrillex hit. But the most interesting by far is contributed by French DJ Brodinski. His tech house remix eschews the hooks of the original for metallic chopped vocals, reverberating plinks and plucks, and a grinding purple lead.

Embarrassing dad at EDM Festival

We saw this video earlier in the week and decided not to post it.  Now everyones kind of talking about it as its gone viral. We feel the need to clear the air.  Is this really an embarrassing dad?  what would you say on a scale from 1-5, 5 being the worst?

We'd say this dad is maybe a 3.  Dude just hanging out getting his PLUR on.  Why all the hate?  I guarantee you will see at least 25 people doing a lot weirder things this weekend at electric zoo festival.  Is it because this guy has a funny euro look complete with mustache and creepy high socks?  His son doesn't seem to mind, especially at the 0:18 mark when he goes in for the nose pick.

TWO PEAS IN A POD...plain and simple

Pasquale Rotella, Holly Madison Pregnant

Experience Creator and keeper of the flame at Insomniac, Pasquale Rotella and his girlfriend, Holly Madison, Playboy Playmate and former star of "The Girls Next Door," announced that Holly is in fact pregnant.

"I've always wanted to be a mom. But I thought it would take longer!" Holly told US Weekly.

Holly is currently working a burlesque show at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. She said in relation to the show "I do get a little nauseous. It happens before my show, so I keep ginger ale backstage."

Rotella, has been dating Madison for nine months.

Do you suppose this means Holly will become a more permanent fixture?

Maya Jane Coles Set to Wow Electric Zoo

(VillageVoice.com) When West London house producer and DJ Maya Jane Coles plays Electric Zoo this Saturday, she'll have something of an uphill climb ahead of her. The young U.S. EDM audience isn't the most patient of crowds, growing sullen when DJs don't deliver bass drops like clockwork. Colesmakes dubstep-derived music as Nocturnal Sunshine, but she's better known for the subtle but incrementally powerful deep house she makes and plays under her given name, and that's what she'll be presenting this weekend.
Considering how blatant the EDM-festival audience likes its hooks—as shown earlier this year when veteran house DJs Mark Farina andDennis Ferrer were replaced during gigs in Las Vegas and Miami, respectively, for not playing music that was "commercial enough"—Coles might have legitimate reason for worry. Electric Zoo, she says, is the largest setting she has played. But the numbers don't faze her.
"I don't particularly tailor stuff," says Coles over the phone from her London home. "I would not play something that I personally don't like just to fit an audience. I never like to calculate things beforehand. The key thing for me is to find stuff that...

Austin Leeds feat. Jason Caesar - Close Your Eyes (Laidback Luke Remix) [PREVIEW]

Laidback luke shared, on youtube, this preview of a new remix he has done for "Close Your Eyes".  The original track by Austin Leeds features vocals by Jason Caeser.  Laidback luke follows his traditional big room electro sound on this remix.  The drop at 2:26 marker in the video is epic.   That being said you should expect to hear this this weekend at Electric Zoo and be ready to go crazy!

Roksonix - Get Live / Girlz Ft. MC Spyda

By Mike B of Butlertron

We haven't heard from them recently but Roksonix is back with a new dubstep track featuring MC Spyda called "Girlz" and it doesn't disapoint. Reggae guitars and dub delays keep things bouncing while Spyda brings his classic jungle lyricism.

Madonna Notches 43rd No. 1 on Dance/Club Play Songs

(Billboard) "Madonna earns her record-extending 43rd No. 1 on Billboard's Dance/Club Play Songs chart, as "Turn Up the Radio" lifts 2-1. (The ranking will refresh on Billboard.com Thursday, Aug. 30.)

"Radio" is Madonna's third Dance/Club Play Songs No. 1 from "MDNA," which bowed atop the Billboard 200 the week of April 14. "Give Me All Your Luvin'," featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., led the week of March 31, while "Girl Gone Wild" reached No. 1 just three weeks later.

"Radio" is headed for radio, too: Interscope Records begins seeking airplay for the song at mainstream top 40 stations on Sept. 25.

With her 43rd leading title on Dance/Club Play Songs, Madonna pulls further away from runner-up Janet Jackson, who has 19. Beyonce and Rihanna follow with 18 No. 1s each, trailed by Kristine W (16) and Mariah Carey (15).

Looking forward, with one more No. 1 on Dance/Club Play Songs, the Material Girl would claim even more historic honors.

Upon her latest coronation, Madonna is now one No. 1 away from tying George Strait's record for the most toppers on any single Billboard chart. The King of Country has sat at the Country Songs chart's throne with 44 titles between 1981 and 2009. With one more No. 1 on Dance/Club Play Songs, the Queen of Pop would tie Strait for unmatched Billboard chart royalty.

Given her multi-format appeal, as opposed to Strait's status as a country-exclusive act (and an unparalleled one, at that), Madonna leads not only Strait but also all artists for the most No. 1s on all Billboard charts combined. With "Radio" ruling Dance/Club Play Songs, Madonna logs her record-extending 156th leader on an active, current-based domestic Billboard survey.

Here's a breakdown of Madonna's No. 1 sums on active, current-based U.S. charts: 43, Dance/Club Play Songs; 33, Hot Dance Singles Sales; 15, Hot Singles Sales; 12, Billboard Hot 100; 9, Radio Songs; 9, Music Video Sales; 8, Billboard 200; 7, Dance/Mix Show Airplay; 5, Adult Contemporary; 4, Internet Albums; 3, Digital Albums; 2, Dance/Electronic Albums; 2, Digital Songs; 2, Hot Digital Tracks; 1, Pop Songs; 1, Tastemaker Albums.

Here is an updated look at Madonna's 43 Dance/Club Play Songs No. 1s, beginning with the double-sided single "Holiday"/"Lucky Star," which reached the top the week of Sept. 24, 1983. (For titles that spent multiple weeks at No. 1, total frames in the lead are noted in parentheses).

Tiesto, SiriusXM to Launch Radio Show Contest For College Students

(Billboard) Tiësto and SiriusXM are collaborating on an upcoming contest that would give a select number of college students the opportunity to host their own one-hour radio show on the Dutch DJ's Club Life Radio channel, with a final winner handed a monthly slot for as long as six months.

For each of the fifteen stops on Tiësto's Club Life College Invasion Tour -- which launches October 2 at Syracuse University -- a new winner will receive concert tickets and create an hour-long mix to be played over the satellite radio channel, with Tiësto choosing the best of the fifteen at the end of the tour.

"We have always valued and supported new music and artists," said Scott Greenstein, president/chief content officer at SiriusXM, in a statement. "And Tiësto has long been on the cutting edge of the dance music culture, so we are looking forward to seeing who Tiësto chooses to host a special monthly show on his SiriusXM channel."

Tiësto's radio channel was announced March 23, the same day he was set to headline the Ultra Music Festival in Miami, and functions as a 24/7 showcase of the DJ's tracks as well as those by other EDM artists, and curated by Tiësto. He also topped Forbes' recent list of the 10 highest-paid DJ's in the world, raking in $22 million over the past year, with a reported nightly average of $250,000. He joined the likes of Skrillex, Swedish House Mafia and Steve Aoki on the list.

"My College Invasion Tour is all about giving students around the US an unforgettable experience," he said in a statement. "This program I've built with SiriusXM is an extension of that experience and I hope it will encourage the creative side of my fans too."

Flosstradamus Interview Reveals True Character

Piece from Buzzine

From humble beginnings spent building their own musical scene in Chicago, IL, Josh Young and Curt Cameruci, aka J2K and Autobot, aka Flosstradamus have steadily gained critical and commercial acclaim to the point that they are now desrevedly hailed as a leading artist in the new wave of Electronic Dance Music which is currently exploding all around the globe.

With an encyclopedic awareness spanning musical genres and an unquenchable thirst to keep pushing beyond any critical expectations, Flosstradamus have spend the past 5 years issuing a constant stream of quality remixes and original EPs, while also never shying away from performing for a crowd of any size, whether it is tens of thousands in festival massives to happy hundreds in packed clubs, or even to delighted dozens at intimate backroom bar gigs roaming from Atlanta to Amsterdam, from Detroit to Dubai and from Chicago to Copenhagen and beyond.

Alongside building a worldwide reputation as party starter extraordinaires, Flosstradamus are also famed for notable collaborations with like-minded Windy City family like The Cool Kids, A-Trak, and (actual sibling) Kid Sister, and for their shrewd remix work for international superstars including Lana Del Rey, De La Soul, Bloc Party, Major Lazer and many, many more. On a recent hot day in Austin, TX, Buzzine’s Andrew Shaw sat down with the endlessly energetic duo to discuss their artistic roots, the ways they have learned to make music as a team, to collaborate with other artists and perhaps even talk a little about that oft-rumoured debut studio album…

Josh Young and Curt Cameruci of Flosstradamus on buzzine.comAndrew Shaw: Starting out together in Chicago, you weren’t originally being signed by managers or engaged by bookers, you were hosting your own homegrown parties, developing your music in a truly independent way: How much of your musical style today stems from the fact that you grew so organically from the very beginning?

Josh Young: Honestly, it has everything to do with our career that he and I joined forces and started our own party. And in Chicago, which is a city that has a gigantic population, but with this sort of small town mentality where everything can be word of mouth. So when we started our parties, there were maybe...

Jazz and Dance Music Meet

(LA Times) The cavernous dance club in downtown L.A. is hopping, and the weekend is still a day away. The club is ordinarily a hotbed of thumping house music, but tonight, the headliner — Houston-born jazz pianist and bandleader Robert Glasper — is switching things up.
Behind a bank of keyboards, Glasper leads his quartet through a restless swirl of searching piano melody, causing the crowd to sway under the hazy colored lights. As the song gathers into focus, one musician begins repeating an unmistakable, 40-year-old refrain, his voice shaded by electronics: "A love supreme…. A love supreme…"
This introduction of John Coltrane (or at least the sounds he inspired) into a modern dance club was a gratifying, chocolate-in-my-peanut-butter moment, but it isn't a singular event. The night's opener, British electronic producer and DJQuantic, made for an easy transition to Glasper, with a live band swerving through funk and soul-jazz.
As both artists expertly blended genres to reach new audiences, their sound pointed to that natural link between jazz and EDM, or electronic dance music.
With fans turning out by the thousands for sprawling dance festivals in celebration of the beat, it's become clear that lyrics are no longer necessary to pull in a younger crowd.
Simply put, instrumental music is becoming something less exotic. EDM, which is often lyricless or dependent on a vocal loop that serves more as an instrument than a worded sentiment, is now one of the top-grossing genres of the music world.
As fans of Miles Davis and Charlie Parker learned before them, listeners drawn to the sounds of DJs such as Tiësto andDeadmau5 know that lyrics sometimes get in the way of expressing feelings in music. And it bears repeating: Jazz began as dance music.
And with artists such as Quantic and Glasper folding strains of jazz into a mix that sounds natural on the dance floor, there's growing potential for EDM to serve as a gateway drug into jazz.
Shared echoes between electronic music and improvised instrumental music have been building for years, with that shared ground most consistently explored in Europe. Squarepusher brought fretless, jazz fusion-ready bass to what was unfortunately known as Intelligent Dance Music in the '90s, and London-born electronic musician Kieran Hebden followed in the ...

Deadmau5 Explains Album Title

(AMP Radio) Fans of EDM superstar Deadmau5 (known by his mom as Joel Zimmerman) will tell you that despite their hero’s penchant for big ideas and exacting perfection. He’s come up with some of the most generic album titles imaginable. His first full-length album for Ultra Records back in 2008 was coined Random Album Title. His next big album release in 2009 was For Lack of a Better Name. On September 25, Deadmau5 will drop his sixth studio album with the nameAlbum Title Goes Here. What’s the deal, Joel?

That question is pretty much what KROQ jock Stryker asked Zimmerman during a lengthy and exclusive conversation, and the answer was classic Deadmau5.

Video -

“For whatever reason, I always get sprung with titles like on the last fucking 20 minutes,” Deadmau5 explained. “Like, ‘Dude, we’re going to print literally in an hour, so before this place closes can you please name it?’ So I’m looking at it, and it says ‘album title goes here.’ I’m like, just leave it. Just call it that. I had to put it quotes a couple of times so they knew I really meant it, and that it wasn’t just a f*ck-up. But whatever, I’ve been doing that on the last two albums for the same reasons. It’s why I have a song called ‘Right This Second,’ because someone was like ‘You have to name this song right this second!’ So I did.”

As Deadmau5 fans anxiously await September 25 to get their hands on Album Title Here, the helmeted producer will release the seriously epic video clip for “Professional Griefers,” his collaboration with Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance, on August 28.

Zedd catches New York Times Eye

(NYTimes) The roar of 10,000 dance-music fans echoed backstage at Red Rocks Amphitheater near here one evening this month as Skrillex, the 24-year-old prince of dubstep, gave a brotherly bearhug to his protégé and opening act, Zedd.
Two years ago Zedd, whose real name is Anton Zaslavski, was making beats in obscurity in Germany. Now, riding the dance world’s accelerated career track, he’s recording with Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, and the crowd at Red Rocks obediently followed his every fist-pumping dance command.
“It’s crazy,” said Zedd, who is 22 but could pass for 16 if not for the fuzz along his jaw. “I’ve always been making music. But suddenly I’m on the other side of the world touring with people like Deadmau5 and Skrillex.”
To most people over 30 those names might not mean much. But electronic dance music, or E.D.M., is having its day as the sound of young America. Festivals like Ultra and Electric Daisy Carnival draw crowds of 100,000 or more, and dance beats fill high-rolling nightclubs up and down the Las Vegas Strip. Forbes recently ranked the annual earnings of top D.J.’s, topped by Tiësto with $22 million. Naturally the music industry is taking notice.
“The record labels now are all saying, ‘We’ve got to find the next...

‘With Your Friends Festival’ announced by Skrillex & Pretty Lights

Skrillex and Pretty Lights have come together to create a brand new festival (because, you know, we really need more of those). The pair of DJs will join Nas,Santigold and a host of other EDM artists for the “With Your Friends Festival” in Nashville on October 26 and 27.

12th Planet, Dillon Francis, Michal Menert and TOKiMONSTA round out the festival’s lineup, and Nas will be performing with a nine-piece band. According to the press release, the fest will take place on the waterfront of downtown Nashville, and
“several private events will ensue post-festival, both at an undisclosed terrestrial location and on a river boat.” So basically you better be in the know so you can see Skrillex spin on a riverboat.

Tickets for the event will go on sale on Wednesday August 29 at 10 a.m. CST, and will be available in general admission and VIP versions. There is no word yet on how much those suckers will set you back. For more information go here.

A lot is blowing up around daft punk the past weekend.  Clearly the super duo have almost completed the album, as we know Rodger Niles was working with the group this summer.  As far as the following flyer announcing daft punk no end album we doubt that it's A. real B. actual dates.  Store it in the daft punk rumors folder.  We believe the album will be coming in mid winter.
As for seeing daft punk touring next summer, it appears to be a strong possibility.  EDMSnob has leaked a conversation he had with Oliver James L'eroe, which you can read below.
P.S. an article was floating around last week claiming to have exposed the Snob. doesn't this facebook picture in the fb conversation seal the deal???
(EDMSNob) Reliable sources have indicated that Daft Punk will embark upon a European Summer Festival Tour in 2013. The tour will reportedly include Roskilde Festival in Denmark,Primavera Sound in Spain, Peace and Love Festival in Sweden, Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts in the United Kingdom, and Oyafestivalen in Norway.

Diddy's Ibiza Movie

(Inthemix) “The vision for Last Train To Paris started from hearing different sounds in Ibiza at DC-10,” U.S. rap mogul P. Diddy told the NY Mag back in 2010 when explaining his forthcoming album. “There’s a lot of different dance clubs in Ibiza, but DC-10 – the way that the drums are syncopated, the percussion – it’s totally different from any club in the world. It opened my mind up to the fact that there’s something more than the four-on-the-floor. Being a producer and a connoisseur of hip-hop production, that’s the thing that motivated me.” This was of course the infamous interview where Diddy also called himself “actually a legend in Ibiza,” before adding, “I definitely experienced Ibiza to its fullest”. Ecstasy sure is an eye-opener.
As chucklesome as his Ibiza prophesising might be, at least the man is tapping into some interesting avenues. He recently recruited Israeli tech-house whiz Guy Gerber to lend a hand to his album, after calling Gerber to tell him he’s a fan. “So I’m in New York and I go to his $1 million studio where everyone like Biggie and even Michael Jackson worked, and the console belonged to Whitney Houston,” Gerber recently told Magnetic Mag. The results of that stint in the studio should be out before the end of the year.
Now comes the trailer for Ibiza, a movie sponsored by Ciroc vodka that’s presumably all about Diddy’s love affair with the island. “I started coming to Ibiza like 15 years ago,” intones Diddy in the trailer. “It changed my life.” From there, it’s all lingering shots of the Mediterranean, the leading man in slow-mo, and even a cameo from Amnesia mainstay Marco Carola, one of Diddy’s favourite DJs. It’s all set to the soundtrack of Jay-Z’s Run This Town, because, of course it is.

I’m not a friend of the mainstream stuff: Apparat

(India Times) If you're a fan of EDM, you've heard of him. One of the notable German musicians known globlally, Sascha Ring aka Apparat is coming to Indian shores for the first time, as a part of the the ongoing year of Germany in India.

He's often described as the missing link betweenSteve Reich and Radiohead. Having churned out four albums and two projects, his last album The Devil's Walk (2011) was a success. Excerpts from an interview:

You're often described as the missing link between Steve Reich and Radiohead. Describe your personal style of electronica music? When I started making music 15 years ago, electronic instruments were the easiest way of archieving what I wanted to do. I think during the years, I just discovered other ways of expressing myself. I grew up with techno, real instruments were not an option, and I just slowly discovered my love for acoustic sounds during the last 10 years. I love the music of both Steve Reich and Radiohead. Reich has always been using acoustic instruments but he did it with a really electronic approach. Thats why I like him. As for Radiohead, they started as a guitar band and got inspired by the IDM (Intelligence Dance Music) sound of electronic music in the 90s. I'm really in a good postion these days as I really don't feel there are any boundaries — I don't have to fit in a genre, don't have to be electronic or acoustic to please my fans so I can do whatever I want to and it feels good.

Where do you derive inspiration for your music? What are your songs about? A lot of ideas actually come when...

AVICII, 'SUPERLOVE' MUSIC VIDEO PREMIERE

(Spinner) Avicii's new Music video "Superlove" isn't your average dance party. We follow a bespectacled music fan as he happens upon a mysterious Walkman.

After popping in the cassette, our hero is compelled to pop and lock like it's before the financial crisis. Avicii's infectious track pumps along with the altered vocals of rock star Lenny Kravitz.

But when the video's star gets a little too excited from dancing, he bangs his head and is catapulted into a neon brainscape. We travel down a corridor of ladies' legs, through the mouth of a tiger and into a smokey party of flamboyantly dressed ravers, ready to trip to the beat.

AND, there's a twist ending. So what are you waiting for? Watch Avicii's video for "Superlove" below, and always practice safe dancing.
