ELLIE GOULDING SKRILLEX BREAK UP
10/31/2012 10:00:00 AM
Ellie Goulding, gossip, skrillex
(Spinner) After nine months of dating, The Sun reports that electronic music's darling couple Ellie Goulding and Skrillex (aka Sonny Moore) have called it quits. The couple reportedly broke up due to long-distance issues as Goulding lives and works in London and Moore lives in America.
Although the couple originally connected when Goulding was sought out to record vocals on a few Skrillex songs, their shared tastes in music wasn't enough to create a lasting intercontinental romance. In the past, Ellie said she wanted to make a whole album with her boyfriend, but their schedules made it impossible.
"I think in an ideal world we'd love to make a whole record together ... but it just so happens that we're both ridiculously busy. When it comes to music, it honestly is really professional. Honestly," Ellie told the AP earlier this year.
But now it looks like that's a collaboration that will never happen. A source close to the couple said though it's sad, the two just can't make it work.
"A source said: 'It's really sad, they were really good for each other. They just couldn't make it work. They both have successful careers and live in different countries.'"

SKisM 'Experts' Music Video Scorches Internet Commenters || MUST SEE MUSIC VIDEO
10/30/2012 04:00:00 PM
music video, skism
You know the jackasses online that constantly bitch about skrillex, avicii, proper house, proper dubstep, etc? Basically the most obnoxious of dance music fans. The purest that aren't afraid to tell you your wrong and PLUR is only when and where they want it to be.
Well SkisM has put them in their place in their new music video "Experts". The video is chalk full of hilarious moments from the dipiction of these internet trolls as pimple headed dorks to the sudden fear strucken into them by the dark lords.
This is finally a music video worth watching because it tells a straightforward story that isn't so ambigious that you need a phd from Emerson to decipher whats going on.
Hurricane Sandy Financial Impact on Music Industry
10/30/2012 03:00:00 PM
article, financial impact, hurricane sandy, money
(Billboard) With an ever-increasing number of live events being cancelled or postponed as Hurricane Sandy nears the Eastern Seaboard, stakeholders in the live entertainment industry are reviewing their insurance policies and contemplating big losses in marketing and promotion expenses and lost or delayed profits.
"I'm getting lots of questions today -- 'What does our policy cover, What happens if?'-type questions," says Paul Bassman, president of Dallas-based entertainment insurance firm Doodson Insurance Brokerage. "Nothing's really happened yet, but in New York City alone, if the subways are shut down, you can't have shows."
So who gets hurt on Hurricane Sandy Financial Impact? According to Bassman, "Everyone's going to take a hit, but it's part of the business. That's why we're here."
Potentially, hundreds of events could be impacted, such as the Boston Nero Show. "A major weather occurrence like Sandy is, obviously, disruptive both in the daily lives of the communities we work in and the clients we tour," says Randy Phillips, president of AEG Live, the world's second-largest promoter, which is extremely active in the New York metro area. "It will have an impact on our budgets and earnings -- if even in the short term, since we average a couple of hundred shows a week in those markets that have had to hunker down while the storm passes through."
Besides potential property damage, which is typically covered by property insurance, promoters and venues are looking at the prospect of millions of dollars in lost marketing and promotion expenses in some of the most expensive media markets in the country. For them, and artists, profits could also slip away, or at least be deferred until a later date.
"If you're doing a show at Madison Square Garden, for example, and you're going to walk off with a million-dollar profit, you're not getting that profit," notes Bassman (although the Garden has no concerts scheduled for this week). "You can reschedule, but the show's not going to happen until later, and the rescheduled date is one you can't play somewhere else now."
Most venues don't carry...
Lady Gaga slams Calvin Harris
10/30/2012 02:00:00 PM
calvin harris, lady gaga, slam
(Examiner) Calvin Harris just learned that when you namedrop a big celebrity, it should be in a positive context. Calvin Harris was interviewing on BBC Breakfast when he revealed he decided not to work with Lady Gaga. Then he proceeded to slam the artist’s music and dig into her artistic creations. While Harris might have thought it was cute, Lady Gaga has hit back and hard on Monday morning. According to the entertainer she has never been in touch with him before and she doesn't appreciate his tone about her music.
“Never even emailed you Calvin Harris I guess it's hard to believe I write + produce my music. Cuz I'm a woman I don't know about EDM right?” tweeted Lady Gaga from her official Twitter account on Monday. “Seems to be trendy lately to talk s--t about ‘Lady Gaga’ when your albums/singles drop. Y'all should live off your own hustle."
Lady Gaga definitely has a point. Calvin Harris isn't the only artist who loves to compare themselves to other established entertainers. Most of the R&B world is still comparing themselves to Michael Jackson and many in the EDM community, just like Calvin Harris love to compare to Lady Gaga or Madonna.
While Calvin Harris obviously doesn't need to mention Lady Gaga for his interviews, it appears he might be insecure about how he stands in the music business and needs to compare. How does he compare to Lady Gaga? Well in record sales he has considerable catching up to do. And he needs a perfume too.
Steve Aoki Hospitalized for Neck Injury

Yesterday we reported an epic Steve Aoki stage dive fail. We are sad to learn that that very stage dive also hospitalized the artist at the Ashford Presbyterian Community hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico over the weekend. The hospital visit resulted from Steve's awkward landing on a trampoline set below the stage. That awkward landing projected the artist diagonally off the trampoline and twisted his neck.
At the time the neck injury occurred, Steve Aoki was ironically wearing a T-shirt that said “Watch your neck”.
Fortunately for Steve Aoki Neck injury, he was released from the hospital the following day free of any major injury.

Hurricane Sandy Left her Mark on EDM Boston Scene

Hurricane Sandy has came and made her mark on the Bay State. In addition to the countless tree limbs, street signs, and power lines lost there was one major impact on the EDM scene in Boston. The Nero show at Royale Night club was canceled.
While the artist is working with the promoters at Royale to reschedule the event, it can't be known when the show will be rebooked. There is potential for a date between November 11-December 26.
Why you ask? Because if you look at Nero's touring schedule there is a giant gap between their Show in Chile on November 11 and the Show on December 26 in Vancouver, with only one date taken for a Vegas gig on November 26. Let us pray that the return visit comes that quickly!

How To DJ : Essentials Before Beginning
Has the huge number of local shows been inspiring you? If you want to know How to DJ, there really is no better time than now. The market is slowly getting saturated, but if you are good, you can find a niche for fun or even make a potential career! These are the top 3 things needed to begin to learn how to DJ.
1. Passion for Music
If you want to be a DJ, in today's market you need to set yourself apart from the rest. You literally need to be fully immersed in music, and have it be a true passion of yours. You need to be that guy or girl who wakes up and not only checks Facebook, Twitter, but music blogs and forums to discover that best sounding clip that resonates with you. Unless you really have a passion for music, being a DJ may either become a chore or a waste of time in your future. Love your music!
2. Equipment
Still here? Awesome! There are three aspects of "equipment" that one NEEDS to DJ. First is music. While at parties, certain ripped downloads may be acceptable. However, if you ever want to launch into a higher echelon of playing, you really should have legal music, either free from Soundcloud or paid from itunes or Beatport. Next, especially for the age of the digital dj, comes a software. If you are trying out at first, a freeware like Virtual DJ or Mixxx may be a good place to learn the ropes. However, the market has two main softwares: Traktor and Serato. Tradition holds that digital = Traktor, and vinyl = Serato. HOWEVER, is not always necessary, which brings me to my third aspect of hardware. The DJ started on just hardware, and it is still a perfectly respectable option. A CDJ or turntable would be the two things to invest in here, depending on your choices. Alternatively, if you want to know how to DJ using digital resources, a controller is often a great place to start. DigitalDJTips has a controller resource where you can compare dozens, and if you are interested this far, I truly suggest looking here first.
3. Willingness to Learn
Loving music is great, investing in hardware software and music can be easier, but it is the time devoted to learning how to DJ that really separates people from doing this. It is said that it takes 10,000 hours to master a skill. Are you willing to put in more than 10? If by now you still want this, I must encourage you to learn. Read up a variety of books. Watch videos and tutorials online for free or for some payments. If you want to learn about how to dj and learn in person, I recommend you meet up with our friends at mmmmaven and take DJ lessons right in Boston!
If you want to know how to DJ, these are the first few things needed. Interested in having DJ tips, lessons, or other resources available here at EDMBoston in the future? Let us know!

Deadmau5 New live show concept Hyped By Artist
(Inthemix) Last Friday, an audience of no more than 200 lucky Deadmau5 fans witnessed their hero in a special intimate performance in Los Angeles. The showcase, at Sonos Studio, was sponsored by local internet radio station KCRW and recorded for a broadcast on 1 November. Before Joel Zimmerman stepped up to his ‘mini-cube’ for a 90-minute set, he sat down with KCRW host Jason Bentley, and U.S. site Magnetic Mag recorded the chat.
During the interview, Zimmerman touched on the news many mau5 enthusiasts have been waiting on: the next incarnation of his stage show. As a guy who spares no expense on spectacle, there are high hopes for whatever comes after The Cube. Deadmau5 to Build live Show at the Veld Music Festival in Zimmerman’s hometown of Toronto was supposed to be grand debut of the new show, but rain prevented it from working at full capacity. In the time since, though, the Deadmau5 team has been working on something even bigger. “How do you keep bringing it up a notch?” Bentley asked.
“Oh man, I wish you asked me this question a year from now, ‘cause damn, oh man,” Zimmerman replied. “I’ve got some things in store that are insane. We were going to do the last Cube show at Creamfields, and I brought like a $5K camera and I was like, “I’m going to film this in iMax quality and it’s going to be amazing. Then the whole festival got cancelled.
“At this festival in Canada called The Veld, everyone thought it was going to be the new stage. But we couldn’t do the production we really wanted. It’s so hard not to drop what [the new stage concept] is. It is so bloody amazing, and I can’t believe no one has thought of it.”

Top 100 DJs Poll: Who Won, Who Lost, and What the Hell Is Hardstyle?
10/25/2012 10:00:00 AM
article, top 100 djs
Article from Spin.com
(Spin.com) On Friday, DJ Mag announced the results of its annual Top 100 DJs poll, an institution in overground dance music. The results suggest some surprising shifts in a wildly mercurial and increasingly globalized assortment of overlapping scenes, even as they ignore vast swaths of some of the world's most dynamic, creative, and progressive electronic dance music.
When it began as a print magazine's readers' poll in 1997, the list largely reflected the tastes of the U.K.'s clubbers, with a heavy emphasis on trance, house, progressive, and techno. In the past half-decade, however, as voting has shifted online and the sample size has grown to encompass a worldwide fan base with conflicting tastes, the poll's increasingly spasmodic fluctuations have come to exemplify the contested identity of "dance music" itself, both as a category and as a community — particularly as so-called "EDM" has skyrocketed in popularity in the United States. With the explosion of social media, the poll has also become an exercise in determining which artists can flex the greatest social-media muscle — testing, at times, the poll administrators' ability to stamp out vote-rigging and IP cheats.
This year's top 10 sees...

Until Now Swedish House Mafia - Free review
10/24/2012 10:00:00 AM
article, review, swedish house mafia, until now
All eyes have been on the Swedish House Mafia since their massive breakup announcement. However, before the big break up announcement the trio were gathering unfathomable attention across the globe for their catchy four on the floor mainstream EDM sound. The long standing DJ's that comprise the trio have been around the block and are no strangers to the most devote electronic music fans. Steve Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Axwell have all said in interviews or alluded that the Swedish House Mafia aura had grown out of control and it was something they no longer wanted to continue with. At this point in the game, with all of the success that they have had through this, their careers have been launched forward and each can continue to be hugely successful as individuals, like in Axwell's Electric Zoo performance, which you can listen to at the bottom here
It's evident that the Swedish House Mafia sound had grown in a direction quite different from the trio's individual careers. The new album 'Until Now' is indicative of that change. Catering to their new audience of newly transitioned 'house' fans, it is apparent in the...

Yesterday, the red sox hired their 46th manager in team history to help the blinkered team to a brighter future. After much speculation and presumption, John Farrell was hired for the job after being brokered from the Blue Jays to the Red Sox.
If you remember correctly Farrell worked as the pitching coach under Terry Francona's administration, making Farrell a familiar face in the dugout. In Farrell's press conference, he hoped the players prior respect for him would carry over to him as the club's Manager.
We shall pray that Farrell leads the team to a more prosperous future and a change from Fenway favorite 'Sweet Caroline' to Daft Punk's 'Around the World'

HOW ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC IS CHANGING CONTEMPORARY CULTURE
10/23/2012 11:00:00 AM
article, contemporary culture, culture, electronic dance music
Article From Ypulse.com
Electric Daisy Carnival. Ultra. Electric Zoo. These are among the many music festivals where you'll find Millennials as electronic dance music (EDM) has risen in popularity in recent years, sparked by Gen Y's desire to experience events "IRL" (in real life). This genre has exploded lately; in fact, the VMAs added the Best Electronic Dance Music Video category this year and college students are blasting these sounds all over campus. EDM represents a very Millennial mindset of mixing sounds and not being limited to one genre. In many ways, it's changing the culture of music today as YAB member Matt explains.
How Electronic Dance Music Is Changing Contemporary Culture
It’s been said that Electronic Dance Music (EDM) is taking over the music world.
From Nicki Minaj’s “Starships” to Justin Bieber’s “As Long As You Love Me,” pop music has adopted a different sound thanks to EDM’s rise in popularity among Millennials, particularly college students.
Catchy synthesizers and heavy bass lines have become the trademark sound for the new generation of listeners who look to music for an uplifting shot in the arm. Mix a Calvin Harris or David Guetta beat with pop music’s trademark synthesized vocals and you have an instant radio hit.
Even vocal verses are no longer a necessity for pop listeners, as evidenced by the popularity of Avicii’s “Levels,” which dominated radio airwaves no less than a year ago.
Since Gen Y has unquestionably attached itself to EDM and claimed the genre as its own, it’s easy to forget just how far EDM has come from the days before it dominated Billboard charts. Now merged with the familiar sounds of pop radio, EDM has deviated far from its roots as a genre with an underground cult following in Europe.
An encompassing acronym that includes aspects of house, dubstep, and trance music, EDM has morphed into a genre of its own during its run of popularity within the past three or four years. And it has been wholeheartedly embraced by what Spin Magazine dubbed “the new rave generation,” a group of new EDM fans dominated by Millennials, who have ushered in EDM’s acceptance within the pop music world.
It’s a reality the new generation of EDM listeners finds revolutionary, but dance music purists find revolting.
For those who grew up listening to clearly defined subgenres of EDM, the prominence of such producers as Avicii and Skrillex couldn’t be more sickening. These two DJ’s in particular have been much maligned among EDM diehards due to their perceived inability to mix their sets live during concerts and their willingness to adapt their production style to the popular music world.

These two DJ’s in particular have been much maligned among EDM diehards due to their perceived inability to mix their sets live during concerts and their willingness to adapt their production style to the popular music world.
Skrillex, in particular, has been both lauded and criticized for combining his trademark scatty dubstep style with the work of such pop music icons as Lady Gaga and Ellie Goulding. While his unique production style garnered him three Grammys in 2012 — and a nomination for Best New Artist — he has gotten plenty of flak from dubstep purists who scoff when a Skrillex track is lumped into the dubstep genre.
Although his music is entirely atypical of what is normally heard on the radio, Skrillex, in many ways, embodies how the combination of genres has made EDM so appealing to Millennials. Skrilllex symbolizes a changing of the guard in the EDM world, in favor of DJs who choose to create their own distinct production style rather than limiting themselves to the confines of one particular genre.

Skrilllex symbolizes a changing of the guard in the EDM world, in favor of DJs who choose to create their own distinct production style rather than limiting themselves to the confines of one particular genre.
But to many, the rise of artists like Skrillex coincides all too familiarly with the emergence of new fans, many of whom are connected with a partying culture synonymous with drinking and drugs. For many observers, EDM is still synonymous with the partying, “frat-bro” culture that is ever-present on college campuses.
But the real question is, why should EDM — or any music genre for that matter — be associated with a certain stereotype or group of people? The perception is that EDM lends itself to a potentially dangerous “raving” subculture, but why should we let an EDM concert become just another venue to party when it could be so much more?
Personally, I find that going to an EDM show is a truly unique experience, one that I don’t believe can be matched by any other genre of music. Perhaps EDM diehards will call me naĆÆve, but I’m not drawn to a concert to see a DJ perform live; instead I feel the environment is worth paying for. It is an indescribable feeling to come together with complete strangers and share a live music experience by dancing your heart out, regardless of whatever it is you’re dancing to.
And I’ve never seen more people willing to dance their heart out than at an EDM show.

Amidst all the debates about preserving the past culture of EDM, one simple fact is often lost: EDM’s rise to prominence has spread the enjoyment dance music provides to a greater number of people. In the end, music is truly there to entertain and to provide an outlet from the real world for however long a given song lasts.
For what it’s worth, I find no other music genre provides a release like EDM. Every time the beat drops, an apprehension drops with it.
And judging by its recent popularity, a lot of people feel the same way about the music genre that is quickly redefining the music culture of Millennials.

Sensation Sale - Offered 100 Million
10/22/2012 02:00:00 PM
for sale, sensation, sensation sale
It's no secret money is being thrown at the EDM industry. EDMBoston has been reporting on it, forbes magazine has been reporting on it, and the New York Times has joined the efforts.
The latest group to be targeted is ID&T, the producers of the famed Sensation Concert tour and producers of Tomorrowland. Inthemix is reporting that 100 million dollars was offered for the world touring Sensation franchise. Nevertheless, ID&T kindly passed on the Sensation sale offer and we thank god!
(inthemix) "With ADE in full swing in Amsterdam, one of the founders of Dutch promoters ID&T, Duncan Stutterheim, has finally spoken about that the long swirling rumours of the sale of his company that produces Sensation, Tomorrowland and more.
Industry talk suggested Robert Sillerman, the US investor with a billion dollars to spend on EDM companies through his company SFX, was close to signing off a deal to add the Dutch company to his growing stable of events. Stutterheim has confirmed the interest at ADE. ‘We used to joke to each that we would sell the company for a hundred – a hundred thousand guilders,” he said. “Then, a few months ago, suddenly someone from America wanted to give us a hundred. A hundred million dollars. The choice was very difficult. But we didn’t do it. I think that this company can continue for another twenty years, that we may go into the world.”"

Trapstyle || Sweet Nothing (Diplo Trapstyle Remix) - Calvin Harris ft. Florence Welch
10/22/2012 10:00:00 AM
diplo, diplo trapstyle remix
Sweet Nothing has received notable remixes from Tiesto and dirtyloud, which ment only one thing. There would be a trapstyle reincarnation by someone at somepoint. That someone is non other then our favorite label boss Diplo, and his notorious trapstyling. The remix maintains the passion of Florence's voice while offering a modified trap drop for all of us to lose our minds to on the dancefloor.
With that said, we offer the question what doesn't diplo have his hands on? Hopefully we will be able to pose that question when he is in Boston this friday.

Steve Aoki, Knife Party Collaborate on Track
10/19/2012 01:00:00 PM
steve aoki
(MTV) Knife Party and Steve Aoki have big news (though virtually everything the hard-electronic music stars do tends to be): They've got a "phat" collaboration and video on the way.
"I wrote probably my phattest banging record with Knife Party:'Pile Driver,' " Steve Aoki told MTV News recently.
While it may not be a complete revelation to those who have attended Aoki or KP shows this summer (they've been giving the track a healthy test run), the coming together of these two explosive dance music brands is something to relish.
We predicted 2012 to be a game-changing one for the electro-house and bass kings Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen (Knife Party). And with subsequent performances, including euphoric frenzies at Ultra Music Festival and Electric Daisy Carnival that were soundtracked by their banging bass gems, "Rage Valley," "Sleaze," and "Centipede," perhaps even that was an understatement.
In the last two years, Steve Aoki has developed into one of the most successful touring DJs on the planet, evidenced by his feature-packed album ("Wonderland" features the likes of Rivers Cuomo, Wynter Gordon, LMFAO, Kid Cudi and Travis Barker). "Turbulence," with Lil Jon and Laidback Luke, "Tornado" with TiĆ«sto, and "No Beef," with Afrojack, are some of his set staples that have seen him taking the biggest electronic stages around the world — even bringing his boats and cakes to themtvU Woodies. And so, the coming together of the three gents is a dance music culture event worth relishing.
"We did two studio sessions in their Pendulum Studios [Knife Party formed from a band called Pendulum]," Steve recalled. "And their studio is sick. They have so much analog. The setup is incredible. And we did two 12-hour sessions, straight."
"Working with them is like working with gods of producers," Steve chuckled. "I love working with Rob and Gareth, and we really turned out a phat record."
The trio plan to shoot a video for "Pile Driver" next month, and fans can expect the song to drop in early 2013. In the meantime, fans across the country can catch Knife Party on their Haunted House Tour, which kicks off at New York's Pier 94 on October 26 and wraps up in Los Angeles on November 3. Aoki will be performing for New York at dance music mecca Lavo Thursday night (October 18).

Top 5 Halloween Costumes : EDM Themed Men
By Adam:
It's almost Halloween, and to go hand-in-hand with our recent article about costumes, here are some for the guys to make a joke about some of the biggest stereotypes in the scene today.

5. The Bro
Looks like some fresh party is coming up brah! Roll up with your crew decked out in some fresh Sperry's, a neon tank (or better, a white one covered in Dayglow paint), big shades and a trucker hat and you're good to go. Make sure you fist pump that wobbly drop and don't let go of the "Avicii Fan" closest to your hips!
4. The Amateur DJ
For the DJ, a few key pieces are needed. First, a dark tight tee shirt and skinny jeans will work. Next, add a chunky necklace from something besides a gold chain. Add some big sunglasses, spike the hair. Grab a pair of earmuffs to fake as headphones. Be sure to check them in between playing the air piano, and don't forget to throw your arms out to the sides after drops.
3. The Solveig
Grab a polo and a windbreaker and zip them all the way up. Next, find a nice chunky sweatband and wrap that around your sidepart. A matching helmet could work, but the other key accessory is a tennis racket. With a "Hello, My Name Is..." sticker, all the girls are gonna want to spend the night out.
2. The Deadmau5
Honestly, this guide is pretty useful for making this costume work. Once equipped with said mousehead, a few things can really pull this together. First off, being skinny would help. Grab an ironic tee, jeans, and throw on some video-gamed themed tattoos. For bonus points, grab yourself a black & white cat, but please don't bring him out.
1. The Skrillex
Have a happy halloween in whatever EDM costume you choose.
Crookers Break Up
10/19/2012 09:00:00 AM
crookers
Say goodbye to the duo Crookers, Phra and Bot, as you know it. The Italian duo released a statement announcing that they will no longer be working together and pursuing individual ventures. On facebook they had the following to say:
“After having worked together for more than 8 years now, the time has arrived to start exploring different directions.” Bot said. “We want to thank all our fans for supporting us from day one! Don’t be sad though, a new chapter is about to begin.”
Despite Crookers break up, Phra will continue on under the name Crookers, while Bot will venture under a new moniker. Hardfest NYC will be one of the last gigs the duo plays together.
