Lunch Beat Boston Launches Lunchtime Dance Hour

Lunch Beat Boston
By Mike H:

If you've ever thought you need more than just your average lunch break to disrupt the monotony of the work day, you're in luck! An organized lunchtime dance party created in Stockholm, Sweden, Lunch Beat, allows workers to shake off the cobwebs and boogie down to an hour-long DJ set, with a catered lunch.

You read that right, the Swedish Lunch Beat dance event we highlighted back in May 2012, is traveling to Boston, while cambridge to be more exact!

A free-spirited event, Lunch Beat Boston is not with out a few rules and regulations. The first two rules on the list given in the organization's manifesto?
  1. If its your first lunch at Lunch Beat, you have to dance.
  2. If its your second, third, or fourth time at Lunch Beat, you have to dance
Among the other Lunch Beat Boston rules, attendees are barred from talking about their job while getting down, which should come as a relief to those looking to escape the usual office gossip and bickering.

The group even encourages attendees to help organize their own Lunch Beats. Kicking off March, 6 at Hack/Reduce in Cambridge, the event is sure to spread to spaces in Boston in coming months.

Be sure to stay tuned to EDM Boston for the latest news and info on Lunch Beat!

John Digweed Set to Invade Bijou in April

By Mike H:

As if the Boston electronic dance music scene has not already cemented itself as one of the best in the country, our community will receive yet another boost with the legendary English DJ, John Digweed. He will be hitting the decks at Bijou Nightclub, Sunday, April 14. He's part of an already supercharged spring lineup of shows in and around Boston; Digweed will join heavy hitters such as Roger Sanchez, Laidback Luke, Martin Solveig (also at Bijou), and many more of the industry's biggest names.

John Digweed at the decksSeen by many as a pioneer in the progressive house genre, the one-time DJMag #1 DJ has held residencies at clubs around the world, including his current spot at Sankey's Ibiza. Known for his powerfully constructed  sets, and eclectic mixes that seem to glide effortlessly across the sound spectrum, Digweed is sure to blow the socks off even the most hardcore house heads who turn out to see him. He's also one of the many DJs that has a frequent podcast.

Although many of us are starting to wonder how we could possibly fit into our schedules all the shows available this spring, this is by no means one to skip. With the expert sounds that Digweed has to offer, coupled with Bijou's stellar sound system and high-quality service, this is shaping up to be night to remember for Boston house fans.

Don't miss out, grab your tickets before they're all gone!

Beatport sold

Robert Sillerman, the original creator of live nation, has upped his anti on his proclamation, last year, to invest 1 billion dollars into Electronic Dance Music. Yesterday he inked a deal for his company SFC Entertainment to acquire Electronic Music Superstore Beatport. For those unfamiliar with Beatport.com, it is a music download site that exclusively features electronic music. Beatport sold for a reported 50 million dollars, although unconfirmed, and adds Beatport to Sillerman’s growing EDM enterprise.

According to sources, Beatport amassed 15-18 million in revenue last year through exclusive music releases and its ability to cash in on an underserved niche by itunes. Despite these good fortunes the site still turned an unreported loss of $2 million.

Sillerman now owns Life in Color (formerly Day Glow) and Disco Donnie Presents. In addition to Beatport Sold to Sillerman, SFX has also procured Voodoo Experience and ID&T, the largest dance event promoter in the world. Despite this frenzy of purchasing Sillerman still thirsty to add more to his empire and certainly has money left in the bank as the aforementioned purchases haven’t come close to the 1 billion in purchases he promised.

The move to join SFX could help Beatport expand into live events as well as garner international success exclaimed Beatport head Matthew Adell.

EDMBoston certainly agrees with the Beatport head on Beatport Sold. If you examine the company’s purchased by Sillerman’s SFX Entertainment, they are purchasing an infrastructure base to make serious moves in electronic music. Acquisitions of two of the largest promotion companys give SFX an instant pathway to reach customers. Couple this with ownership of the premier source for fans to purchase electronic music and an established concert tour that reaches the mainstream and Sillerman has instant access to start generating money from electronic music instantly. He has contact with fans in every aspect and stage of the fan experience, except one thing. Sillerman’s SFX has failed to purchase a community and a blog.

The essential vitamin that makes electronic music what it is, is community. No matter how much money Sillerman dumps into electronic music he will never be able to be successful unless he wins over the fans. Life in Color isn’t building a community, but rather providing people with a onetime cheap imitation EDM experience. Long time electronic fans know this and new fans that take to the music move on from those types of events. This insincerity, capitalization, and failure to cement roots with fans will never create the lasting success of an Electric Daisy Carnival or Tomorrowland. If Sillerman is unable to generate events of this magnitude with long running success he’s headed for massive financial losses.

Comment Below NOW: Do you want Sillerman to fail or succeed after Beatport Sold out?

How To Get Home Late in Boston

By Kat S:
late night boston
Boston is a city that goes to sleep EARLY and make not mistake about it, everyone knows. Bostonian's complain about this issue at an unrelenting pace and its a topic that comes up at least once in every bar room each night.  The early closing hours throughout the city are adverse  for those going to late night concerts in Boston.  Most city-goers don't own cars, and the MBTA’s last train is at 12:30 AM. So, where does this leave those getting out of a show or club after 1AM?

There are always rumors flying that the Night Owl service available from 2001 to 2005 will be revived by the MBTA, but in a recent interview with Boston Patch, MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo dispelled these rumors.

Congorock at Gypsy Bar Boston: A Review

Rocco Rampino
By: Justin (@mistr_Q on Twitter)

Last Sunday night the temperature was below freezing and snow strewed the streets, but luckily things warmed up rather quickly once Congorock arrived at Gypsy Bar to bring the heat! Reality TV star ‘DJ’ Pauly D also happened to be in town that evening to play a show at Prime, but Gypsy was the place where the EDMBoston crew and all the true electronic music fans came to see a real DJ ‘rock’ the house. Italian born DJ Rocco Rampino, better known as Congorock kept a stampede on the dance floor all night long by boasting his raw technical talent and his seamless transitional skills.

Best Harlem Shake Videos

best harlem shake

Kat:

People can't get enough of the harlem shake! It's everywhere and even middle aged moms are talking about it.  Due to its virality, scores or videos have been uploaded to youtube and made it impossible to find the best harlem shake videos.  Below are my personal favorite Harlem Shake videos from all around the world!

I love the quirkiness of this Harlem Shake, made out of edited animal videos from all across the internet. It combines the Shake with another great internet meme, silly animals.

The amazing trainers at Sea World taught a Walrus how to shake it, how amazing is that?

Even inanimate objects are getting in on the Harlem Shake!

Harlem Shake Consumes Boston

harlem shake boston

Boston has been getting into the latest internet fad, the Harlem Shake, with businesses, bands and schools all going crazy once the bass of Baueer's Harlem Shake drops. The internet creates a crazy world of fad videos and pictures. From planking to LOLcats, viral internet memes can take the world by storm within a few days, and the Harlem Shake is no exception.

Baueer even got in on the action, at the Middle East in Cambridge, last week during his Valentine's Day show with Just Blaze.  At the show you, he put on full display his Harlem Shake Boston edition!

Local Boston business HubSpot put their own, milky, twist on the viral video.  They created a quirky Office Space Harlem Shake in their Boston office that would make the most lenient boss question perplexed. Working in an office with their own Harlem Shake and their own giant T-Rex...YES PLEASE!

Bostonian's don't stop shaking just because of a little snow. During Blizzard Nemo earlier this month, this group braved the snow filled Boston streets to do the Harlem Shake and catch frost bite.

But the Harlem Shake has also taken over the world, not just Boston.

Eric Prydz at Prime Boston: A Review

By Mike H:

Going into this show, I wasn't terribly sure what to expect, besides of course a killer performance from progressive house legend Eric Prydz. Although I wasn't all that familiar with Prydz, I knew he had been making some noise with his semi-monthly podcasts, which spotlight songs and artists that the vast majority of the population have never heard of. I also knew that he had recently been offered residency at Wynn nightclub in Las Vegas, where he displays his new show concept, Black Dice: a minimal-lighting, back-to-basics approach to the growing EDM craze. All in all, I couldn't wait to see what Prydz had to offer.

Paradise Rock Club to Host Daft Punk Cover Band

By Kat S.
The typical cover band consists of the die hard rock fans wanting to relive the hay days of a beloved big name act. Artists such as Bruce Springsteen, KISS, and Journey have all had their fair share of cover bands with witty names. On April 23, though, a new type of cover band will be visiting Paradise Rock Club.

One More Time: A Daft Punk Tribute is a full blown replica of the Daft Punk experience. Their website describes the act as “the first and only realistic tribute” of its kind. Throughout the show, the pair wears replicas of the quintessential Daft Punk helmets while on a pyramid stage, creating “the perfect Daft Punk inspired vibe.”
Daft Punk in their HelmetsThe original Parisian duo hasn't toured since their Alive 2007 album was released. Since, they have been in the studio, releasing the Tron soundtrack . It was recently announced via Columbia Record that Daft Punk will release their first album in eight years this upcoming May, but there are no signs of a tour anytime soon. While fans across the world speculate as to whether Daft Punk will ever hit the stage again, the One More Time tribute act is attempting to fill the void.

As EDM becomes more widely accepted by the music industry, it’s to be expected that tributes to the biggest artists will come about, but, how effective is an EDM cover band? In a few years, will similar tributes pop up? The of One More Time is the show that the tribute puts on for the audience. By recreating a Daft Punk concert as closely as they can, they are trying to put the audience in the same state of mind that Daft Punk would. For any future cover bands to succeed and tour like One More Time, they would need to create a show as similar to the real thing as possible.

The problem with cover bands of other artists, though, iis that many EDM shows are great because of the energy, vibes and work the specific EDM artist puts into it. The anonymity and ambiguousness of Daft Punk is the only reason why a cover band like One More Time can be successful. It’s hard to see a cover of Skrillex or Avicii going on tour and succeeding since their personas are so closely tied to their music.

Big Gigantic at the House of Blues Boston Review

By Kyle D:

Big Gigantic
The lights went dark at the House of Blues on Friday, February 15, as Big Gigantic finished their last song, but not a fan in the crowd turned for the exits.  The energy was exploding around the room as chants of “one more song” and “Big Gigantic” lifted from the floor, nobody was ready for the night to be over as a room full of fans begged for more.  Several minutes later, after a short lived break, Dom Lalli and Jeremy Salken of Big Gigantic stormed back onto a dark stage in an explosion of light.  Moments later, the silence was split by Dom’s beautiful saxophone as they dropped “Fantastic” on an amazing crowd.  As the song came to a close, the crowd still wanted more, and Big Gigantic was prepared to give it to them.  Dom threw on some heavy dubstep and let the House of Blues rage out one last time before calling it a night and sending a mass of satisfied fans to the streets.

Can You Learn To Like Music You Hate?

Aggregated from NPR

(NPR)You hear some music you hate. That's fair. We all do on occasion. But can you learn to love — or at least not loathe — that music? Can you intentionally transform the visceral response you have to certain pieces and styles, or does that happen at some more incalculable, subtle level?

Researchers at Australia's University of Melbourne say that the more dissonance (which they describe as "perceived roughness, harshness, unpleasantness, or difficulty in listening to the sound") that we hear in music, the less we enjoy said music. Seems obvious enough, right?

Also falling into the "no kidding" category is the not-at-all new notion that the more we're exposed to a certain kind of music — either through intentional engagement or simple osmosis in whatever culture we're immersed in — the more we like that music.

But the researchers, who worked with participants ranging from highly trained music students at the university's conservatory to members of the general public, did come up with a couple of potentially interesting observations.

UZ: The Masked King of Trap

By Kyle D.

UZ. The masked king of trap. Between hiding behind a mask, and writing tweets in code, this EDM rising star has fans across the community scratching their heads to uncover the identity.  UZ specializes in ball-trap music, giving a massive hip-hop feel to his tunes.  He manages to slow down the tempo, while still making the crowd go nuts. UZ blew up over this passed summer after releasing his Trap Shit EP in June through the Mad Decent label.  The massive release caused UZ’s trap bangers to be thrown around at festivals all summer.  His distinct sound could be heard echoing from Electric Forest all the way to Camp Bisco as fans started to take an interest in this unknown, mysterious, masked artist.

UZ Trap Shit 6/9 Album Cover
Since the release of Trap Shit, UZ has continued to produce and release numerous trap anthems, causing me to view him as one of the fastest rising stars in the EDM community.  But one question still remains unanswered.  Who is the man behind the eerie mask on stage?  Speculations and accusations have been thrown about the EDM community with numerous artists, ranging from Kill the Noise to AC Slater, claiming to be the real UZ.   Artists such as RL Grime, Baauer, Diplo, and Flosstradamus frequently feature UZ, and have played a major part in the rise of the masked performer. One artist in particular, Diplo, seems to have a special appreciation for UZ, causing some fans to question whether Diplo is the culprit.  Diplo released several statements talking about UZ up to the release of Trap Shit, describing the music as “drunken energy sub bass and cartoon horn stabs that make my stomach feel weird and my feet shuffle.”

UZ DJ Troubl
DJ Troubl
While Diplo could be UZ, one artist in particular, DJ Troubl, has drawn much attention in the discussion of who's behind the mask. French producer DJ Troubl mysteriously stopped updating his Facebook last June, right around the time of UZ’s first EP release.  At the time, fans thought nothing of it, but as the months pressed on, more and more evidence is pointing towards DJ Troubl being UZ.  Recently, a fan posted on UZ’s Facebook wall stating that he knew that UZ and DJ Troubl were the same, this post received numerous likes and then was conveniently deleted by UZ a few minutes later.  Adding to the skepticism, DJ Troubl and UZ both use the same exact mixing equipment while performing live, and allegedly have the same color arm hair.  Although this seems to show that DJ Troubl is in fact the mysterious artist on stage, still to this day nothing has been confirmed.  UZ recently tweeted that the big reveal is coming soon, but until then fans must continue to pick their brains trying to unmask the bass god.  Although the true identity of UZ remains unknown, one thing is for sure.  Whoever is hiding behind that mask sure knows how to make it bump.

Check out some of his music from the Mad Decent Soundcloud:

TomorrowWorld 2013: Where in the world is Tomorrowland?

Today, the Belgian festival Tomorrowland announced TomorrowWorld 2013, the next installation of the festival, which is set to go worldwide in an unknown location September 27-29 of 2013. This is a huge move on the festival's side, as 180,000 tickets for Tomorrowland sold out within a minute last week, and there is clearly a demand for what has been hailed the "Best Music Festival in the World".

The festival organizers have launched a website, www.tomorrowworld.com, and created a guessing game among prospective worldwide fans.  Here's to hoping it will be in the USA!

4 Reasons Big Gigantic Show is A Great Way To Bounce Back from Valentines Day

big gigantic

Cheer up! Valentine's Day is over.
Stop writing love haikus in your own blood on the bathroom mirror. You're better than that. It's time to pick up the pieces of your hollow, desolate love life and let the music make you whole again. It's time to dance your troubles away to the soulful tunes of Big Gigantic! Not convinced? Well, here's five reasons you should put some pants on and grab a ticket while they're still available.

4. Big Gigantic's Dominic Lalli's Saxophone & Drummer Jeremy Salken

Nowhere in electronic dance music can you find a live saxophone player on stage except at a Big Gigantic show.

The first time I heard Big Gigantic, I had just emerged onto the floor of the Hampton Coliseum after a 13-hour, 615-mile odyssey down the east coast from Boston to Virginia for BassLights 2012. However we didn't know the prize that would lie on the otherside of the 10 mile backup to get to the venue. The very first sounds that washed over us were the funky Saxophone rhythms of Big Gigantic. Every ounce of stress I had been feeling up until that moment dissipated, like vapor, and I was carried away on the soaring notes from Dominic Lalli's saxophone.

Dominic & Jeremy combined to unleash a wall of sound that feels both unhinged and flowing. Lalli's sax weaves through every tune, guiding the melody, while Salken's drumming drives alongside the thumping, bass-heavy beats.

It's incredibly refreshing to hear two instruments wielded so masterfully over funky groovey electronic dance beats.  For evidence of the honeyed funkiness, see "Sky High," a track that features one of Lalli's most soulful sax solos over a beat that thumps with bass.

Ticketmaster's New Ticket Scalping Prevention Tool

Tired of ticket scalping bastards hoarding tickets before you have the chance to hit submit, on the captcha screen?

Well Ticketmaster is rolling out a new tool to help fans. The tool will give ticketmaster customers the ability to transfer tickets to another person/account for no additional fees. The feature will be available under the "My account" section on TM. If you wish to utilize it you can transfer tickets by entering in how many tickets you'd like to transfer, the name, and email address of the recipient. The receiver will then log into their account and click accept.

The new seamless feature to combat ticket scalping will also be available on their mobile app beginning this spring.

“As the industry leader, Ticketmaster continues to introduce transformational products that revolutionize the fan and client experience,” said Michael Rapino, CEO of Live Nation Entertainment, in a prepared statement, calling Ticket Transfer “the most trustworthy, fastest, easiest, and environmentally-conscious way ever introduced.”

If your worried about security, fear not. The system has the ability to cancel the original bar codes on tickets and issue a new one, for a safe secure transfer.

There is one caveat, the transfer system will not accomodate paperless tickets. Ticket Master CEO Nathan Hubbard said it would “defeat the purpose” of paperless in its attempt to prevent scalping. “While they are only .01% of the tickets we sell, artists can still select to paperless tickets in the traditional method where the ticket is tied to the purchasing credit card. As we have seen, this is a proven method curbing scalping, reduces scalping by 75%.”

Do you think this new Ticketmaster tool will prevent Scalping?

Feed Me With Teeth: Royale Show Review

feed me boston review

By Liam (@LiamOKennedy on Twitter):

A week after I walked out of Feed Me's Feb. 5 show at the Royale, there's an image still seared in my mind that won't dissolve away.

It's one of those images that functions like a portal to a particular moment in time. If you've ever been affected - spiritually, emotionally, physically - by the all-consuming sensory time warp of a live electronic music show, you probably have at least one of these images stored away.

What I keep seeing is a massive set of jagged LED teeth, stretched in a devilish grin across the width of the Royale's stage, waiting to come to alive with light. Above the teeth, a pair of slanted, menacing eyes peers over the crowd. A man appears between the eyes, the restless onlookers sense him in the shadows, and roars erupt as the night is set in motion.

The eyes glow silver in the dark as Jonathan Gooch a/k/a Feed Me builds a... READ MORE AFTER BREAK

Kaskade Demands Focus on EDM at Grammys

kaskade grammys
On Sunday at the Grammy's it was business as usual, in fact almost a near repeat performance of the prior edition on the awards show.  Sonny Moore, aka Skrillex, ran the gambit of electronic categorizes he was nominated for and walked away with 3 prized Grammy trophies in tote, just as he did in the year prior.  In surprising fashion he even beat out 2012's biggest track Levels by Avicii.  However, that wasn't the highlite of the night for electronic music.

EDMBoston believes the big story happened back stage at the Grammy's.  The vocal Kaskade spoke out to the press core about things needing to change at the Grammys.  Kaskade brought light to the fact that "Best Dance Recording" and "Dance/Electronica Album" are only relegated to the untelevised pre-cast at the Grammys.  Meaning not one person in the primetime audience last night witnessed the riches 2012's electronic music had to offer.

On one hand this could have been a good thing, considering...

Boys Noize - What You Want VIDEO PREMIER

what you want video
Boys Noize carries authenticity in his original productions and live shows.
That can be officially said for his music videos as well!  We've seen DJ's such as Laidback Luke pose as super hereos but Boys Noize went a different route with the theme.  The 'What You Want' Video places a new neighbor into a neighborhood composed of super humans.

"The idea was to interpret the lyrics 'what you want/what you get' as a metaphor of consumerism," Boys Noize mastermind Alex Ridha told Rolling Stone. "It's also a reflection on the concept of normality. In a world where singularity is the norm, is being normal making you the exception? Then, the goal was just to had fun with costumes and visual effects. We wanted to communicate this awkward feeling you have when you're at a costume party, but you're the only one not wearing a costume."

Boys Noize went on to explain that his inspiration for 'What You Want' came from none other then the Beastie Boys. "Their Licensed to Ill album is one of my all-time favorite records, and to me 'What You Want' has some sort of B-boy style mixed with my obsession on robot vocals and modern sound aesthetics. This song combines a lot of things I love about electronic music," Ridha said last July in Rollinstone.

If you loved the song, we can tell you that Boys Noize Live show opened up with it at his House of Blues Show in Boston.  It brought the crowd into unison and set the house on fire!  Not to mention Boys Noize set followed up with his original music that was liberating and awing   It was a delicious break from the electro cheese that has flooded the city as of late.

Kaskade's "Late Night Alumni" Releases 4th Album

kaskade mix

We all know and love Kaskade's weekly mashup mondays! However, that's not all the Big Room House producer has been up to. Kaskade is an active member in the band Late Night Alumni. The group released their fourth album, The Beat Becomes A Sound, on January 29. The group is composed of singer and lyricist Becky Jean Williams and led by producers John Hancock (who has produced David Archuleta, among other artists), Finn Bjarnson (Pleasant Grove producer who is Kaskade’s musical partner) and Kaskade, aka Ryan Radon.

The album varies from Kaskade Mixes DJ work but the overtunes of his style are very present in the album. It features the quartet’s signature down-tempo blend of vocals, strings, drum breaks fused with electronic elements.

In addition to ‘The Beat Becomes A Sound,’ record label Ultra is going to release a 6 week video series, featuring Late Night Alumni’s performance at the Masonic Temple in Salt Lake City.  The series will feature unreleased material from the new album along with a plethora of past album hits.

We will keep you curent with side projects and other kaskade mixes as they become available!

John Dahlback can do no wrong in the production studio. Throughout 2012 he released massive big room tracks that wowed even the most accomplished EDM bloggers, including ourselves.

Dahlback is back with a new release "Life (Diamonds in the Dark)".  The melody of this track is so captivating that Tiesto included the instrumental version on his Club Life Volume 2 Miami compilation.  In addition it nabbed Pete Tongs coveted spot as the "Essential New Tune"

Fortunately for us Bostonians, we will be able to catch John Dahlback Boston Show Live at The Estate on Friday February 8th.
